2024-25 MBB Rankings

It's Week 10 and Duke MBB stays at #4 in both polls.

AP Poll

1.Tennessee
2. Auburn
3. Iowa State
4. Duke
5. Alabama
6. Kentucky
7. Marquette
8. Florida
9. Connecticut
10. Texas A&M

Coaches Poll

1. Tennessee
2. Auburn
3. Iowa State
4. Duke
5. Alabama
6. Marquette
7. Kentucky
8. Florida
9. Texas A&M
10. Connecticut

Duke is still the only ranked ACC team, but Pittsburgh is #26 by AP voters and #28 by coaches. (On any other week, we might root for them.) Clemson is also receiving votes in both polls.

Future opponent Illinois (who headed west and destroyed then-top 10 Oregon) rose 9 places to AP #13 and 5 spots to Coaches #15.
Maybe a competitive game at Duke (but of course a loss) and a solid win over a Louisville team that just beat UNC will get Pitt ranked next week.

Because my brain is broken in a very specific way I noticed that despite remaining #4 Week 10, Duke received fewer total points than when in Week 9 (1309 vs 1321), which I initially chalked up to a few voters moving Kentucky up after being impressed by their win over Florida. But then I noticed that there is one fewer first place vote this week (60 vs 61) and therefore presumably one fewer ballot from which to earn points.

The AP Poll already lost one voter this year (longtime Arkansas beat reporter Bob Holt, who died suddenly early last month). Did they lose another one? Did someone just not get their ballot in on time? What kind of operation are they running over at the AP anyway?

A tight operation, apparently. Submit your ballot on time, because we won't wait for you.

College Poll Tracker is a helpful site that breaks down the AP rankings and voters. They show that 62 voters for Week 8, 61 voters for Week 9 (Eric Newman took a holiday nap), and 60 voters for Week 10 (Stephen Means and Steve Greenberg broke their resolutions almost immediately).

3 Dukies on the list of the best freshman in the sport. As for the rest of the ACC...

Tar Heel tears. 😢

It's a big week for them. Torvik has them projected at 13-7 in the ACC with a 72% chance of making the tourney. Favored by 1.3pts over Wake. Must win game? And Caleb Wilson announces on Thursday.

KenPom also predicts UNC to finish 13-7 in conference, missing out on the double bye. The top 4 are predicted to be:
Duke19-1
Louisville16-4
Clemson16-4
SMU14-6

Auburn a unanimous #1 in the AP. I would have bet Duke would get a couple first place votes on the strength of the head to head win, but twas not so. Duke was a near unanimous second, though; three voters had Duke third (behind ISU on all three ballots).

According to College Poll Tracker, those 3 voters were

Stephen Means, Cleveland.com
Chris Murray, Nevada Sports Net (Reno)
Stephen Thompson, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Insert your theories here. As a former resident of the state of Nevada, I take issue with the idea that everyone there can only view sports from a gambler's point of reference, but then again, Mason Gillis' late dunk against Boston College on Saturday did have consequences with the point spread.

I guess 29 points wasn't quiiite enough of a shellacking to impress Mr. Thompson.

The bigger mystery is what did Mitchell Northam of WUNC see last week that had demote Duke from 1 to 2 on his ballot. I guess Auburn's emphatic 2 point win at Georgia couldn't be overlooked. Here is the man himself explaining:
