2024-25 DWBB Season

Just a slight correction: Those weren't double technical fouls, but just double common fouls. The two players were pushing and holding each other down on the block, but not swinging at each other or yelling. Of course, if the ref hadn't called the double foul, it might well have gotten to technicals, but both players did pretty well at not making it personal up until then. I thought that call was one of the better officiating moves on the night. The call calmed the situation down immediately, and kept the situation from over-escalating. There ultimately were no technical fouls called in the game.

Your point about Toby and Woody not backing down is still quite valid, though. They both are quite feisty, and especially in Woody's case, it can be pretty surprising to opponents, who see how thin she is and assume they can just take advantage. The next moment she's blocking their shot and sprinting up court with the ball.
Since I couldn’t hear/understand the PA system, I assumed that they were assessed technicals; thanks for the correction. At the time, I didn’t think it was fair, as 7 had pushed Jordan down, but in hindsight it was reasonable. It did serve the purpose of reducing the tension. Thought they did a decent job all game, although I’m sure the Cal fans thought we were too rough. Of course, when your pocket was picked clean by Taina so many times, you get frustrated.

Speaking of Taina, that was one of the better zero point games I’ve ever seen.

Beth Mowins (Lafayette basketball; bio) and Debbie Antonelli (NC State basketball; bio) have the call on ESPN2.

NC State University recently announced that Debbie Antonelli would be inducted into the Reynolds Coliseum Ring of Honor, and their athletics department posted an episode of Pulse of the Pack where the hosts discussed the achievement (start around the 18-minute mark).

Jeff Gravley: "She will have a banner in Reynolds Coliseum, up there with Kay Yow and Susan Yow and Genia Beasley and Andrea Stinson and Trudi Lacey. She'll be among the greats."

Tony Haynes: "There are a lot of former players who understand the game, but when they're given the opportunity to go into broadcasting, I don't know that they master the art of explaining the game in a way that helps people understand the game at a deeper level. Every time I watch Debbie Antonelli calling a game, analyzing a game, I learn something... and for me, that's kind of the challenge as an analyst."

That ceremony took place during halftime of Thursday's game against Pittsburgh, and Charleston's NBC affiliate has some video:

Debbie Antonelli: "It means so much to me that NC State would honor me like this. I don't even know what to say. I don't think it's hit me yet. It still feels like it's an unbelievable thing. You know, this is my team and my school. I never really get to cheer for them, and to feel them cheering for me was really amazing. NC State's a special place. It served as an incredible launching pad for my career, and everything that I've done in my career. I'm grateful for Boo Corrigan and Stephanie Menio and the rest of the basketball organizations at NC State for doing this for me."

Let's Go Duke!

Good start for both teams, but thankfully better for Duke.
Blue Devils lead 18-14* after one. Cameron has a niced sized crowd.

*Almost 21 -14, Jackson had a half court buzzer beater rim out.

Kind of sad about the decline of Stanford WBB. Once upon a time this was a game we couldn't stay competitive in.

Duke has put on a defensive clinic in the 2nd, and has done just about as well offensively.

Duke leads 43-21. Duke scored 25, Stanford only 7.

Janessa Cotton walking gingerly off the court, and we noticed her sitting on extra padding on the bench. Not sure what happened, perhaps during warmups as she’s dressed as ready to play.

Nah we were in OT with them last year. Great game. I seem to recall we used to get ran off the floor.

With Tara retired and having to be in a geographically nonsense conference I imagine it'll be hard to get back to their heights.

You mean, like last year? A little slip in talent during the transition, but still a well-coached team. They’ll be back quickly.

Last year's Stanford team was preseason #15 and stayed in the top 10 for every week after that. Before the Duke game, they beat #9 Indiana by 32 in Maples.

This bubble season feels like an anomaly. Today's announcers said that Stanford has 5 top prospects coming in next year. I counted four in ESPN's top 100:

5-10 point guard Hailee Swain (ranked #9)
6-4 forward Lara Somfai (#16; Duke was one of her finalists)
6-5 forward Alexandra Eschmeyer (#31)
6-2 forward Nora Ezike (#84)

I don't know if Stanford being in the ACC will hurt their prep recruiting in the future, but if Coach Paye continues to be more amenable to accepting transfers, she should have no issues with reloading.

Last year's team had Cameron Brink ;)

In the current game, only Vanessa has yet to score. 53-31 with 4 to play in the third.

I've posted the Cameron Brink/Kevin Hart meetup before, but it's worth a repost:

Brink, like Caitlin Clark, had the option of returning for a fifth year but went pro. (The ACC move probably helped that decision.) Kiki Iriafen defected to USC (Big Ten has just as much travel), and Hannah Jump graduated. Definitely a different team last season.

In all seriousness duke not playing well the last 8 minutes and the lead is down to 14. Too much time left to coast
