2024-25 DWBB Season

It's simple. Steel Sharpens Steel. I don't think Kara cares much about rankings, rankings don't gift you a championship at the end of the year.
Agreed. I am probably reading too much into it. DMBB also seems to be front-loading stronger teams this year. I recall Coach K had a formula for maximizing end-of-season ranking and it did not have as many top-10 games in pre-season.

Duke women are up to #8 in the AP Poll.

1. UCLA
2. Connecticut
3. South Carolina
4. Texas
5. LSU
6. USC
7. Maryland
8. Duke
9. TCU
10. Notre Dame

16. UNC
22. Louisville

NC State (essentially 26th), Georgia Tech (27th), Stanford (28th), and Florida State (31st) also received votes.

Up above we talked about how bad "Feast Week" viewership for WBB was, both in person and on TV.

Yahoo Sports gives their huge hunk of criticism. (They are specifically talking about the Duke-Oklahoma game.)

Unfortunately, few watched or were able to enjoy those performances the night before Thanksgiving, as the game was one of the hundreds buried on FloSports. The subscription service is a pricey $30 a month and the viewing quality is comparable to the cameras set up by overzealous parents in a high school gym. The buzzer-beater by Jackson wasn’t replayed, even as the broadcast spoke in awe about it for multiple minutes. When it was replayed for viewers out of the break, the camera shot was a close-up of Jackson and didn’t show the actual ball arc.

This situation isn’t any different than years prior. It is now common for highly ranked teams to fall in tournament games as parity continues to spread and coaches build challenging non-conference schedules. What is different is the environment. Women’s basketball has never been this popular or widely discussed, as proven by the viewership numbers and a massive media rights deal for its tournament. It’s time to give greater opportunities with a quality viewing product to watch these marquee matchups.

Yeah FloSports sucks. I think Duke is done on it in WBB, but I'm sure softball will have its two big non conf tournaments on the service because we can't have good things

If it wasn't for flo would the softball games be streamed? Being available is better than not available I guess, bad camera work or not.

Stats v. Columbia

Here are the numbers from yesterday's game (I can still say that) against the Columbia Lion's at Cameron:

OFFENSE
Possessions: 76.9 (fast, but about our normal pace)
oRtg: 1.001 (pretty good; adj. 1.055, #31)
eFG%: 55.4% (solid)
3pt%: 33.3% (a little low, but not bad)
2pt%: 56.6% (good)
%three: 18.5% (very low)
FT rate: 9.2% (terrible to the point of shocking - just 6 total FT attempts)
OR%: 43.8% (excellent)
TO%: 29.9% (terrible)
a/to: 0.913 (bad)
%assisted: 61.8% (very good)
fast break pts: 20 (26.0%) (great, best of the season)

DEFENSE
dRtg: 0.793 (excellent; 0.687 adj., easily #1 in the country)
deFG%: 40.6% (excellent)
3pt%: 18.2% (excellent)
2pt%: 47.6% (mediocre to poor)
%threes: 34.4% (a hair high, but in this case, that's good)
FT rate: 21.9% (decent)
DR%: 73.2% (decent)
TO%: 23.4% (very good, but actually below average for us)
a/to: 0.611 (excellent)
%assisted: 45.8% (good)
stl%: 10.4% (a bit low)
blk%: 7.1% (meh at best)
fast break pts: 13 (21.3%) (pretty bad, but mostly an offense problem)

We were incredibly sloppy on offense, and it turned a great game into only a good one. There's just no excuse for 23 turnovers in a 40-minute game. Only the Belmont game was worse, and even that game was only one worse in total and 3% worse by possessions. Fortunately, our defense was smotheringly good, and was able to prevent a lot of the TOs from turning into good looks, especially from three. Unfortunately, they were able to get out on the break a fair amount, although considering the volume of TOs, our defense actually did pretty well on that score, too. They weren't able to pass the ball much, and if it weren't for Kitty Henderson, by far their best player, scoring 20 on us and dishing out a third of her team's assists (and grabbing 5 boards and 2 steals along the way), we'd have really smashed them in spite of our sloppy play.

Speaking of which, I know Reigan Richardson really filled up the stat sheet again, putting up a line of 19-7-2 (pts, reb, ast), but she was still guilty of much of the sloppy play, throwing 5 TOs along with those two assists. If we did WOTM polls, I'd have voted for our Steady Eddie, Vanessa de Jesus calming things down, but still knowing when to attack and when not to. Vee had 6 assists on the game, and only turned the ball over once in 23 minutes of game action off the bench. But while she was the calm, steady influence, facilitating others, she also didn't hesitate to attack. Or actually, she did hesitate a couple of times in order to change pace and accelerate to the goal. She also had two dagger threes, and was a very efficient scorer, putting up 10 points on 4-5 shooting (2-2 from deep). She was a dogged defender, too, several times working her feet to keep drivers from getting to the rim and making them head back out with the ball, defeated. Not spectacular, by any means, but doing what it takes.

I don't think Columbia is quite as good as they were last year, but this was still a decent win in what was bound to be a let-down game, sandwiched as it was between facing a couple of then-top-ten teams in Vegas and a game coming up on Thursday against the defending national champions. But we have to learn not to let our attention waiver, and we certainly can't afford to throw the ball away like we did against a really good team. The good news on that is that we've so far taken best care of the ball when facing the best teams. I hope that continues.

A quick follow-up on the ongoing seating issue. I received a call last week from my marketing guy who assured me that my General Admission ticket would be honored in Section 19 for this season only and that it was good only for the extreme end sections on either side of the floor. The person in front of me presented their paper tickets to the usher and were redirected to Section 17. Seeing that, I didn't ask anything, but just confidently held my phone out in front of me and proceeded without pause like I knew what I was doing (which I did), and the usher didn't check the section/seat and didn't stop me. So I'm not 100% sure if GA tickets will actually be generally honored in Section 19 or not.

I suppose I will recheck the theory next weekend against VaTech. I'll have to leave early from that game, but I hope to catch the first half at Cameron. I'll let folks know if there is any further development in the Great Seat Saga.

But for now, at least, I'm happy with how things were eventually resolved, even if the process to get there has been somewhat arduous.

The NET Rankings debuted today and get updated daily. Here's the first look:

The rankings also indicate that Duke is presently 3-1 in Quad 1, 1-0 in Quad 2, 2-0 in Quad 3, and 2-0 in Quad 4. But how do you know which games are in which quadrants?

I wrote a whole thing about how men's basketball had a NET Explainer and the women didn't, and when I tried to use the men's explainer (mansplainer?) for the Duke women, the quadrant records didn't match up.

So I dug deeper and eventually found this PDF of frequently asked questions for the NET in women's basketball. The quadrants are defined on page 4.
  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-25, Neutral 1-35, Away 1-45
  • Quadrant 2: Home 26-55, Neutral 36-65, Away 46-80
  • Quadrant 3: Home 56-90, Neutral 66-105, Away 81-130
  • Quadrant 4: Home 91-362, Neutral 106-362, Away 131-362
Duke's quad breakdown:

3-1 in Quad 1: #11 Kansas State (neutral), #16 Oklahoma (neutral), #41 South Dakota State (away); #15 Maryland (away)
1-0 in Quad 2: #46 Columbia (home)
2-0 in Quad 3: #72 Belmont (home), #107 Liberty (away)
2-0 in Quad 4: #206 Dayton (home), #317 Radford (home)

I like this boldness.

Make one bold prediction for the rest of the season.

Voepel: Duke will win its first ACC tournament title since 2013 (and ninth overall).

Also, in the way too early bracketology dept, Charlie Creme has moved Duke to the two line.

Duke WBB plays at South Carolina on Thursday 12/5 at 9pm ET on ESPN (streaming link, listen, live stats)

The #8 Blue Devils depart Durham and go south of the border (possibly visiting the kitschy tourist trap South of the Border if they take a bus down Interstate 95) to play the #3 South Carolina Gamecocks in the 18,000 seat Colonial Life Arena. These two teams are now the highest ranked representatives of their conferences, so this has become the premier matchup of the ACC-SEC Challenge. The game is the second of a Thursday night doubleheader on ESPN, so let's hope that #4 Texas vs. #10 Notre Dame ends on time.

It's not often that you get a shot at the Best Team of the Year. I'm not talking about South Carolina's 2024 NCAA Tournament title, but the ESPY Award they won in July over all of the other champions: Boston Celtics, Florida Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Aces, Texas Rangers, Connecticut men's basketball, Michigan football, and Oklahoma softball.

Were the other nominees in attendance, and if so, how did they react? I have to imagine that Chiefs coach Andy Reid was napping, Celtics wing Jaylen Brown rolled his eyes because he's used to being passed over, and Connecticut coach Dan Hurley was backstage, demanding a vote count. But I don't know for sure; I'm assuming that former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions had a camera on all of them, but he has yet to respond to my email request.

Of course, that was an award (and title) for last season's 38-0 team, but almost all of their players return this season. Gone is 6-7 center Kamilla Cardoso, their leading scorer and rebounder, who elected to enter the WNBA Draft rather than use her fifth year of eligibility. (Freshman reserve Sahnya Jah, who transferred to Arizona, is the only other player to depart. She was 10th on the team in minutes and scoring.)

The Basketball Hall of Fame has a set of five individual awards in women's basketball, one for each position, and the Lisa Leslie Award is given to the nation's top center. There are 20 names on the preseason watch list, and Duke has already faced and defeated 4 of them: South Dakota State's Brooklyn Meyer, Kansas State's Ayoka Lee, and Oklahoma's Raegan Beers and Liz Scott. Liz who, you ask? Liz Scott is a 6-2 forward with no starts this season; she came off the bench and scored 8 against the Devils last week. She's also an example of how preseason honors are pure guesswork.

The same goes for Sakima Walker, a 6-5 senior center for the Gamecocks. She made the watch list, possibly on the strength of the program and the likelihood she would fill the shoes of predecessors like Cardoso, Aliyah Boston, and A'ja Wilson. But instead she and the other two tallest players on the roster are at the end of the bench, as 17th-year head coach Dawn Staley is shaking things up a bit and not relying on a true center this season.

PROBABLE STARTERS

5-9 senior guard Te-Hina Paopao (12.0 pts, 2.3 reb, 2.9 ast, 1.3 stl)
6-2 junior forward Chloe Kitts (10.9 pts, 8.0 reb, 0.7 ast, 1.1 stl)
6-0 senior guard Bree Hall (7.1 pts, 3.4 reb, 1.4 ast, 1.0 stl)
6-3 senior forward Sania Feagin (6.1 pts, 4.3 reb, 0.6 ast, 1.4 blk)
5-9 junior guard Raven Johnson (3.6 pts, 4.8 reb, 2.3 ast, 1.1 stl)

TOP RESERVES

5-10 sophomore guard MiLaysia Fulwiley (10.8 pts, 3.0 reb, 1.8 ast)
6-3 freshman forward Joyce Edwards (9.8 pts, 6.1 reb, 1.1 ast, 1.8 stl)
6-0 sophomore guard Tessa Johnson (9.5 pts, 1.5 reb, 1.0 ast)
6-3 junior forward Ashlyn Watkins (7.7 pts, 6.3 reb, 1.0 ast, 1.6 stl, 1.3 blk)
5-9 freshman guard Maddy McDaniel (5.0 pts, 1.5 reb, 3.5 ast, 1.3 stl)

BENCH PLAYERS

6-4 junior forward Maryam Dauda (2.5 pts, 2.7 reb, 0.2 ast)
6-5 redshirt freshman forward Adhel Tac (1.4 pts, 2.2 reb, 0.0 ast)
6-5 senior center Sakima Walker (1.0 pts, 1.0 reb, 0.3 ast)

Does it make a difference? Hard to say. UCLA ended South Carolina's 40-game winning streak (recapped earlier in this thread), partially because the Bruins' 6-7 junior center Lauren Betts created matchup problems. She had 11 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks, and only 1 foul in 37 minutes of play. Duke doesn't have anyone like Betts, so they're going to have to find another way to win this game.

I've been providing a Tale of the Tape to preface some of the Duke men's games against major opponents, so it makes sense to do the same here. Stats are courtesy of Basketball Reference, unless otherwise indicated.

I know it's not football, but this is kind of a homecoming for the Gamecocks, who are playing in Colonial Life Arena for the first time since November 17. They've played only two games there this season; Clemson and UCLA were road games, and Michigan, NC State, Iowa State, and Purdue were at neutral sites. Bart Torvik is projecting South Carolina to win 75-62, which seems like a big margin, but is the fourth closest for one of their home games (Connecticut, Texas, and LSU are expected to play them closer, but lose as well.)

It's game day. Here are Duke's preview and PDF game notes, as well as South Carolina's preview and PDF game notes. Courtney Lyle and Carolyn Peck will announce the game on ESPN.

Duke-South Carolina is one of ten ACC-SEC Challenge matchups scheduled today. Six games were played Wednesday, and the SEC has a 4-2 lead.

If you can't watch, you can listen to the game on the Blue Devil Sports Network (online/Varsity app) or on Sirius XM channels 106 or 193, if you subscribe. Similarly, the game is available on the Gamecock Sports Network (direct link) or Sirius XM 119 or 190.

I haven't been collecting third party pregame links for basketball games this season, but I came across this: FOX 57 Columbia has Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley's comments from yesterday's practice.

Posting to bring this to the top. I am excited (and of course anxious) about this game. Who will step up? There are many good players for this version of the women's team - will USC have an answer for all of them? LGD!

Man, that UCLA loss really woke up South Carolina. They bounced back from that to put up a couple 40-point beat-downs on some pretty good teams. We have a tough task in this one, especially on their home floor. A win would make a serious statement, though. I hope we come out hyped and ready!
