2024-25 DWBB Season

Uncharacteristc high-scoring game for Duke. I'm most surprised that Duke could put up 109 points for the win!

Edit: 38 assists on 40 made baskets! Coach Kara just said she had nothing to do with all the good things this team did today.

Oklahoma is crazy elite in several statistical categories. Basketball Reference has them 1st in the nation at defensive rebounds, total rebounds, and assists, and in the top 10 in points and field goals (both attempts and makes).
And we out-rebounded them 38-34. Great effort. Also had 38 assists to their 33.

Oklahoma is very good, but I said upthread they haven't played anybody. Until today.

espn takeaways:

Duke: The Blue Devils have dominated their opponents in second-chance scoring this season (128-56) and have almost twice as many points off the bench (278-146).

Oklahoma: The Sooners came into the game having held their first six opponents to 31% or less shooting, and ranked second nationally in opponent field-goal percentage (28.0%). On Wednesday they allowed the Blue Devils to shoot 56.3% (40 of 71).

We currently lead Torvik's "wins above bubble" metric (by a fair amount), a decent proxy for strength of resume. I did not see this one coming given the gauntlet the non-conference schedule has been.

Duke senior Reigan Richardson was the story for the Blue Devils Wednesday afternoon, scoring a career-high 35 points to lead 13th-ranked Duke (7-1) to a thrilling 109-99 overtime win over No. 8 Oklahoma (6-1) in the Ball Dawgs Classic title game.

Richardson, tapped the Ball Dawgs Classic MVP, knocked down 13-of-22 shots overall, including 5-of-9 from long range, and dished out seven assists in a stellar performance for the veteran. The senior was unconscious during the overtime period, scoring 10 of Duke's 15 points.

Junior Ashlon Jackson contributed 18 points to finish the Ball Dawgs Classic with 48 total points, while sophomores Jordan Wood and Jadyn Donovan added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Taina Mair once again was excellent in spearheading the offense, with the junior recording 10 points and a season-high nine assists.

Those were some damn impressive highlights.

Stats v. Oklahoma

Here are the numbers from yesterday's game against the Oklahoma Sooners at the Lee's Family Forum in Hendersonville, NV (i.e. Vegas):

OFFENSE
Possessions: 89.6 (even accounting for the OT, that's a fast game)
oRtg: 1.216 (wow; 1.348 adj., tops in the country by a mile)
eFG%: 64.1% (outstanding)
3pt%: 55.0% (outstanding)
2pt%: 56.9% (very good)
%three: 28.2% (maybe a hair low, but fine)
FT rate: 32.4% (excellent)
OR%: 27.3% (pretty bad, worst of the season to date)
TO%: 16.7% (solid)
a/to: 2.533 (STUNNING!)
%assisted: 95% (STUNNING! Looks like a typo, but isn't)
fast break pts: 21 (19.3%) (very good)

DEFENSE
dRtg: 1.105 (bad; 0.936 adj., second half of D1, not where we want to be)
deFG%: 56.8% (terrible)
3pt%: 36.4% (bad)
2pt%: 57.7% (bad)
%threes: 29.7% (OK)
FT rate: 31.1% (very bad)
DR%: 74.4% (pretty good against a team like this)
TO%: 20.1% (bad)
a/to: 1.833 (awful)
%assisted: 86.8% (horrendous)
stl%: 6.7% (terrible)
blk%: 1.9% (horrible - I did not leave out a digit)
fast break pts: 5 (5.1%) (excellent - best thing about our defense)

Not surprisingly about a game that ended 109-99, there was a lot to like about our offense, and not a lot to like about the defense. Reigan could not miss in this one, and especially didn't miss (at all) in the overtime. We also got to the free throw line a lot (but so did they), and when we got there, we hit them at a 78% clip, which was a significant improvement on our season average, and better than our opponents managed (65%), a +3 point differential. Ashlon Jackson's heave-ho from about 65 feet to end the third frame turned out to be crucial, since they did something similar at the end of regulation to tie things up and send it to OT. We also were able to run our fast break often, such as one sequence when Jordan Wood poked the ball to a team mate, and broke the length of the floor to hit the layup at the other end on a couple of quick up-court passes. Their heftier players could bully us, but only when they could catch us.

On defense, in contrast, we were able to stay in front of them, so even though they liked to shoot quickly, we were often there to slow them down just enough. On the other hand, they moved the ball expertly, and I would be agonizing about their monumental assist rate and outstanding EFG, except that somehow, we did even better at both. We set a team record for assists in a game at 38. Weirdly, exactly the same number of fouls were called on both teams, although that include Taina's well-earned technical, so they were actually called for one more foul in open play. The F1 on Fournier was a little absurd, given what happened in the men's game the night before, but OK. That's nitpicky. The refs did not decide the outcome, despite how close the score was. These were just two evenly-matched teams going toe-to-toe, and we just happened to come out on top.

That was a fun game. In case you haven't seen it, the replay is available on YouTube here. Note that it does start about three minutes in.

There's also a full replay (including the first 3 minutes) from Women Hooping.

And Duke WBB eventually put up Reigan Richardson highlights:

I am a little sad to see how empty the seats are--about 15 visible OK fans and 30 Duke--most of whom are likely family members. Apparently the people in Henderson NV have not gotten the message that women's basketball is worth watching. Maybe the other side has more people?

Given that it was on FloSports, nobody at home got the message that WBB is worth watching either.

SC reminded everyone that they are still really good today by eating #15 Iowa State's turkey and stuffing.

The Cyclones are not thankful for having to play today, and get beaten by 40 points. 76-36. Iowa State had only one quarter in double digits, their scoring went in succession 3, 6, 18, 9.

You know it's gonna be a bad day when you double your first quarter scoring in the second, and even then you only score 6 points.

I think this is more an issue with the promulgation of preseason tournaments more than anything else. Most people didn’t know this event was happening - hell I’ll bet most duke fans in Vegas for the men knew the women were also right nearby (two friends of mine didn’t).

These games are just random in location and too numerous and well right before thanksgiving is rough for travel
