2024-25 DWBB Season

Wow, that's harsh news. I can't say I'm completely surprised, but that particular injury is going to matter.

This is a big loss for our team, and I'm sure it makes everyone cranky. Delaney Thomas is going to be asked to do a lot, and Toby Fournier will have to contribute in a hurry as a freshman, as well. Both are undersized compared to top tier bigs.

Losing a 5 star recruit for the season...yes, big loss indeed. Here's a great chance for others to possibly step up and seize the opportunity to shine (prematurely?) No doubt that we'll miss her size though...sigh.

Surprise that Lawson couldn’t pick up a center in the Portal. Duke definitely will be at a height disadvantage in the post.
Good guards and wings but need size in Women’s basketball

Women's basketball is vastly underreported, so I don't know if Coach Lawson was actively looking for a center in the transfer portal. By all outward appearances, she chose to add one player (6-2 guard Riley Nelson from Maryland, way back in April) and otherwise decided to stay put. Compare to, say, UNC men's coach Hubert Davis, whose mishaps in acquiring a center were well-documented, and not just by me on this board.

I think Arianna Roberson's season-ending injury is a huge loss for this team, period. And with Kennedy Brown and Camilla Emsbo having graduated, it emphasizes the huge unknown this team will have in post play. But having said that, I don't think the ACC is a very post-oriented conference, and I don't think Duke has a height disadvantage.

I compiled some information about this topic in the past, going through the 2024-2025 rosters of all 18 teams, and noting any player listed by her school as 6-2 or taller. (That's not a perfect cutoff -- see Riley Nelson listed as a guard above, and I'm sure there are forwards under that height -- but generally it should illustrate who on the team is most likely to play in the frontcourt.)

I'm sure some of these opposing frontcourts are going to cause Duke problems during the season, and that having a healthy Roberson would be highly preferable, but without her, I don't see the Blue Devils being woefully out of place here.

And Toby can out-jump any of them. 😁

Hat tip to the Syracusefan.com board for posting this info. The ACC Tip-Off is their preseason media event, where coaches and a couple of players from each team will take part in some Q&A sessions. This is probably when the conference releases its preseason poll and awards as well.

If it's like the football version that happened last July, you can watch it live on ACCNX or find some very short clips on ACC Digital Network on YouTube later.

Not sure where else to put this.....
The daughter of one of my co-workers just got ranked in the ESPN Top 25 for the class of 2027. Apparently, she really likes Duke and Kara but hasn't had a lot of contact. She's piling up offers from places like Louisville, KState, VaTech, Arizona, Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan, Cal, Kansas, Missouri and about 15 other. She is expecting offers from UNC and NC State soon as they have been giving her a lot of attention lately. Is there a way to let Duke Women's Basketball that this Top 25 kid really likes Duke and would love to hear from them?

Harper Dunn? Sorry buddy, I have no connections.

Lengthy article from espn on player evaluations from the summer circuit. Duke on the list of several. I'd really like to get Makeer, espn's new rankings has her continuing to rise to #4 and she played with Toby. Solidify that Canadian pipeline, the player they say may be the best in all the classes is a 2027 point guard from Canada.

Yup, Harper. Crazy thing about her, she plays for a very small school in the small school league her in NM. Her national attention comes from her club team out of Oklahoma. All the big high schools want her to transfer but she’s a rancher and does one of those rancher club things. Big schools in Albuquerque won’t give her the opportunity to do it so she stays at the small school. Her step-mom (my coworker) played at Oklahoma and coaches her. Harper is 6’-5” and plays the point sometimes. By the way, her stepmom is 6’-5” as well.

I would think Duke would be interested in someone who is 6'5" with the handles and awareness to play point in high school. But even though I'm sure Duke is aware of her and likely interested, I don't know that they'd expect to make an offer to a 13-year-old. A lot can happen in four years.

I was kinda thinking the same, that it's early in the process. We've seen a lot of movement, both girls and boys, in recruiting rankings in a few short years. But I don't think nmduke is talking about an offer, just some interest so the girl doesn't think 'Where were you 2 years ago when all these others showed interest?'.

Well, she's class of 2027 so she's a sophomore now and I think she's 15. She already has a ton of offers from high majors, so she's probably hoping for an offer from any school that is interested.

The whole schedule is released tomorrow...

Here we go. The article and the PDF schedule for the whole regular season.
