2024-25 DWBB Season

Duke WBB hosts Dayton on Thursday 11/14 at 7pm on ACCNX (streaming link, listen, live stats)

The #16 Blue Devils look to bounce back from Sunday's loss at Maryland when they play the Dayton Flyers on Thursday evening in Cameron. Their head coach is Tamika Williams-Jeter, now in her third season. You may remember her as Tamika Williams from her playing days at Connecticut (1998-2002, one graduating class ahead of Kara Lawson at Tennessee). Williams won national titles in 2000 and 2002, and set an NCAA record for career field goal percentage -- 70.3 percent -- that still stands. Fortunately, she's not playing on Thursday, unless she and Lawson decide to engage in a battle of H-O-R-S-E during pregame warmups.

Before the season started, I collected information about each of Duke's non-conference opponents, and based on the preseason polls of their respective conferences, almost all of them could make the NCAA Tournament, either as the automatic qualifier in traditional 1-bid leagues or as an at-large in multi-bid leagues.

Radford: 2nd in Big South
Liberty: 2nd in Conference USA
Maryland: 4th in Big Ten
Dayton: 11th in Atlantic 10 (which has 15 teams)
South Dakota State: 1st in Summit
Belmont: 3rd in Missouri Valley
Kansas State: 1st in Big 12
Oklahoma: 4th in SEC / DePaul: 9th in Big East
Columbia: 2nd in Ivy
South Carolina: 1st in SEC
Wofford: 1st in SoCon
South Florida: 1st in American

That's a tough schedule; Coach Lawson isn't messing around. The two teams least likely to qualify for the Big Dance are Dayton and DePaul, and Duke may not even get to play DePaul.

The Atlantic 10 held its Media Day in Washington, DC last month, and Dayton was represented by Coach Williams-Jeter and her leading scorer from last season, senior guard Ivy Wolf. There's video of their press conference:

They also conducted an interview with the host of Locked on Women's Basketball (start around the 26-minute mark):

Wolf is one of 2 returning starters on Dayton's roster, which includes 5 returning reserves, 5 incoming transfers, and 3 freshmen. So far their rotation looks like this:

PROBABLE STARTERS

5-8 senior guard Ivy Wolf (16.0 pts, 3.5 reb, 4.0 ast, 1.0 stl)
6-2 senior forward Arianna Smith (11.0 pts, 10.0 reb, 2.0 ast)
5-8 junior guard Shantavia Dawkins (12.0 pts, 2.5 reb, 1.0 ast)
5-7 grad guard Nicole Stephens (9.5 pts, 3.0 reb, 2.0 ast, 3.0 stl, 1.0 blk)
5-10 grad guard Rikki Harris (7.0 pts, 5.0 reb, 1.5 ast, 2.5 stl)

TOP RESERVES

6-2 freshman post Molly O'Riordan (7.0 pts, 5.0 reb, 0.5 ast)
5-10 junior guard Nayo Lear (6.0 pts, 3.0 reb, 1.5 ast, 2.0 stl)
6-3 sophomore wing Ajok Madol (5.5 pts, 8.0 reb, 1.5 ast, 2.0 stl)
6-1 senior forward Shannon Wheeler (3.0 pts, 3.5 reb, 0.5 ast)
6-1 sophomore guard Jayda Johnson (1.0 pts, 0.0 reb, 0.0 ast)

BENCH PLAYERS

6-0 freshman guard Kamryn Grant (6.0 pts, 1.0 reb, 0.0 ast)
6-5 sophomore center Eve Fiala (3.0 pts, 3.0 reb, 0.0 ast, 1.0 blk)
6-0 junior guard Eleanor Monyek (0.0 pts, 0.0 reb, 0.0 ast)
5-10 freshman guard Olivia Leung
5-9 sophomore guard Denika Lightbourne

Last week the Flyers started the same 4 guards -- all under 6 feet tall -- and a different lone forward. Arianna Smith started Game 1 but missed Game 2, while Shannon Wheeler barely played in Game 1 but started Game 2. Smith led the A-10 in rebounds last season, and has more career starts, so I imagine she'll be on the floor at tipoff if she's available. (Maybe Coach Williams-Jeter will start both forwards and only 3 guards, as a counter to Duke's size.)

Two of the starting guards are incoming transfers from teams that played and lost to Duke last season. Nicole Stephens was at Columbia, who hosted Duke (on November 14, coincidentally). She was scoreless in 6 minutes off the bench, but had a rebound, an assist, and a steal. Rikki Harris was a reserve at Ohio State, who played a home game against Duke in the NCAA Tournament. She played 15 minutes and scored 4 points, adding 2 rebounds and 1 steal.

You can't read too much into team stats this early in the season, but Basketball Reference had a few interesting numbers that I thought were worth sharing. Dayton averages 32.5 defensive rebounds (31st nationally) and holds opponents to 6.0 offensive rebounds per game (8th best). This suggests that one of their strengths is denying the other team second chance points.

The Flyers also appear to be good at 2-point shots (58.3 percent, 30th) and getting to the free throw line (24.5 attempts per game, 44th). They are not as good from beyond the arc, hitting only 21.1 percent of their threes (320th). But that's misleading; if you look more closely, Wolf and Stephens are a combined 40 percent (8-of-20), while the rest of the team is 0-for-18.

In an article previewing the Atlantic 10, The Next spoke with Coach Williams-Jeter, who had this to say about the matchup:

"The Duke game is a return game. It’s our last return game from the previous staff... And to go to Duke, what an experience, it’s like the kids last year when we went to Connecticut to start off the season. It’s a great experience and an opportunity. Davidson went there [to Cameron] and beat them last year. So it gives you a little hope where the A-10 is, very strong."

Bart Torvik ranked Dayton #195 in the preseason (they're now #184), and projected an 82-57 Duke win.

Signed on the line. :)

Duke women's basketball and head coach Kara Lawson announced the signing of Emilee Skinner to its 2025 freshman class Wednesday afternoon. Skinner, an outstanding and super competitive point guard with a very high motor, basketball IQ and tough mindset, checks in as the No. 7-rated player in the 2025 class. She is the Blue Devils' third espnW top-10 player signed in the last three seasons.

"I'm so excited to play for Duke. It feels great to have officially signed," said Skinner. "I cannot wait to play for Coach Kara and to be a part of The Sisterhood. This is a great opportunity for me to grow as a player and to contribute to the team's success."

Duke target Lara Somfai (we're in her final 3) has moved up to #16 and is the #2 forward.

Lara Somfai committed to Stanford today.

Lara Somfai, a top recruit in the Class of 2025 out of IMG Academy, has committed to Stanford, she announced on Wednesday. She chose the Cardinal over Duke and UConn.
"...And coach Kate [Paye] was the one recruiting me. So when she took over, I didn’t really mind at all, because she’s the one I knew the best.”

It's game day. Here are Duke's game preview and PDF game notes, and Dayton's game preview and PDF game notes. Dean Linke and Debbie Taylor are the TV announcers.

For those of you attending, tonight's promotion is the Duke 100 Centennial Game: "Join us as we celebrate 100 years of Duke University! Arrive early to grab a free Duke 100 rally towel and shirt to cheer on the Blue Devils to victory."

Dayton does not seem to offer an alternative listening option for this game. (If it were up to me, they'd have their own audio broadcast, and they'd call it Radio Flyer.)

This game is exclusively on ACCNX, so here's a refresher.

ACCNX is a streaming-only channel available online or through the ESPN app. If your TV provider carries the ACC Network, you should be able to watch. Just log in with your TV provider credentials.

There's no need to scramble/pray for a connection once the game starts. You can prepare in advance. Right now, when I click on the streaming link provided above, I get a page with a check mark and this message: "You have access to stream this content"

This is a good time to get familiar with the process. The Radford game last week was also on ACCNX, and 5 of Duke WBB's conference games this season will be streamed there as well.

Looking at the overall box score, it seems like our lousy shooting might be weighted by two players. Thomas and Donovan are each 1-6 for a combined 2-12. That'll bring down the overall stats for sure. Bleah.

FT shooting seems to be awful all around though, aside from Jackson's two for two. The team is barely above 50% from the line.*

*Edit...Battiston's last two bricks brought it down to 47%.

I watched and Wood had a career high. She is doing a great job in the post. Thomas is reasonably good too. Donavan is definitely a poor shooter. She misses layups bunnies just inability to accurately shoot. DeJesus to me is the point guard. Mair is ok but not as skilled. Okunawa very athletic but is too frantic resulting in turnovers. Fournier is very skilled.

Richardson and Jackson are the leaders of the team. Duke is 10 deep and I wish Scheyer would have this philosophy too.
Free throws Duke is simply atrocious
9-19 unacceptable

We won the game by 35 points, and that's absolutely the most pissed off I've ever been leaving Cameron.

Not about the basketball. The on-court product was great. But I've been sitting at mid-court in Section 17 for 20 years, and suddenly I can't. For some unfathomable reason, they moved the band to exactly center court - the best seats in the house. Mind you, they did this with absolutely no warning, and most importantly, with no advanced warning before season tickets were sold. Just: Sorry, Charlie. We don't give a s&^% about you.

Oh, I could still sit in Section 17. And ONLY Section 17. Where the band was standing the whole time at center court. So, if you want to see the game at both ends of the floor, you have to stand, too. And be sure the conductor, who was perched on the press row table, isn't in your sight line. Oh, and I measured the ambient noise level, too. 98 decibels sitting at about the free throw line on either side. At that volume, hearing damage can occur within about 10 minutes. The band played for at least 20. I bring ear plugs to Cameron, but most do not. It's literally painful if you don't.

I saw Nina there, and I made it clear that I was extremely unhappy. I'm not the only one. The season ticket holders on that side started a "Move the Band" petition that I signed, but Nina will also get an e-mail from me first thing in the morning, with a copy to the President's office and the coaching staff.

Unacceptable.

I first noticed this move on the game day notes that Duke put out, but it didn't dawn on me what it actually meant until I was watching. What a horrible decision.
Nina had to notice as she sits across from the Duke bench, which is only 30' at most from the band's new location. Hopefully it's just a temporary and bad idea.

Signs posted where the band used to be say something like "New Experience Coming Soon", or some such nonsense. That doesn't seem temporary to me. It sounds like some kind of stupid Wally Wade type idea. Blech. I may just ask for a refund and stop coming to games completely. I don't need the fake "experience" crap. I want to see good basketball. Just let us focus our attention on the floor, please.

Ok, boomer. JUST KIDDING! I agree with you and am sorry for your night. I hope they respond correctly.

I got the email about the band as well as "DJ Freddie Fred" being set up in section 17. My guess is the game organizers don't like for empty seats to be visible on the TV feed. If fans don't like it then more of them should show up. Hats off to those who do.

Duke 84, Dayton 49 (recap, box score, highlights, condensed game, full replay, presser)

Duke sophomore Jordan Wood scored a career-high 17 to lead six Blue Devil double-digit scorers in a convincing 84-49 victory over Dayton in non-conference women's basketball action Thursday evening inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Wood finished her night with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and added three rebounds, three steals and a block and an assist to her stellar stat line. Freshman Toby Fournier had her fourth double-figure outing with 15 points while Reigan Richardson found her groove in the second half with nine of her 12 on the night. Oluchi Okananwa dropped in 11 and Vanessa de Jesus and Ashlon Jackson both had 10.

Duke (3-1) shot 50 percent from the field for the game and got 58 points off the bench in the victory. Defensively, the Blue Devils held the Flyers (2-1) to just 32 percent shooting for the game and forced 24 turnovers.

Coach Lawson led off with high praise for the reserves in this game:

"I thought Woody and Toby changed the game when they came in, in the first quarter. We didn't get off to a great start, but when I inserted those two players, I thought we just kind of got some momentum, and that kind of jump started us and got us going.

I want to stay on the bench, because I thought it was, by far, our bench's best performance overall this season. It was good to see de Jesus back, and I know she's been back, but she hadn't played like herself yet, and tonight was the first night she played like we know she can play, and so that was really good to see.

I thought this was Koabel's best performance defensively. She was really good, and I hadn't seen that yet this year. And then, Okananwa, we started to see flashes of what she did all last year, to be the Sixth Player of the Year. To have four of the six double figure scorers be off the bench, it's a good feeling."
