2024-25 DWBB Season

As noted in another thread, the DWBB 2024-25 non-conference schedule is out.

It's a bit disappointing to see just four home games before Christmas. The marquee games are both on the road (Maryland and South Carolina). That's roughly half of the pre-Christmas slate we had last season, which was seven, and that isn't counting the pre-season exhibition game, nor the game against the USWNT. We had six such games in both prior seasons, again, not counting exhibitions. I wonder why such a dearth this year? Hopefully we will get at least one exhibition game this year, too, but it's still a pretty sparse home schedule.

I guess on the up side, I don't have any conflicts with the four dates.

Beat me to it. The non-conference schedule is official. (Hat tip to hallcity)

The Ball Dawgs Classic will take place the week of Thanksgiving just outside of Las Vegas, at the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada. (This was the home arena of G League Ignite.) There's a 4-team women's field and a 4-team men's field. The other teams have yet to be announced.

Last year was the first to feature women's teams. Stanford beat Belmont and Florida State beat Northwestern. Stanford defeated Florida State to win the title, while Belmont won the consolation game over Northwestern.

Flip the Maryland game to a home one, and it's an even 5/5 home/away (aside the tournament) but it does look sparse. Not sure why that wasn't done when the home and home was scheduled. We are on the road a second straight year in the SEC challenge, but SC came to Cameron last season, so it's not that surprising. The schedule difficulty is actually pretty decent, with Dayton, SD State, Columbia and USF being tournament-level teams (along with Maryland and South Carolina.)

IS the conference schedule still 18 games? (Men's is 20, but the women have played 18 for a while.)

That didn't take long. Talia Goodman posted the women's teams taking part in the Ball Dawgs Classic:

Looks like the Dollar Loan Center has been renamed to Lee's Family Forum. If you know the area, it's still next to Green Valley Ranch.

DePaul: 12-20 last season, NET 102
Kansas State: 26-8, NET 18, NCAAT 4 seed, lost in 2nd round
Oklahoma: 23-10, NET 27, NCAAT 5 seed, lost in 2nd round
Duke: 22-12, NET 20, NCAA 7 seed, lost in Sweet 16

Remember, Oklahoma is an SEC team now, so 4 different conferences are represented. The Sooners added Oregon State star Raegan Beers (17.5 pts, 10.3 reb) to their lineup.

She does, as a 5x5 player in the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Kara Lawson's personal medal count has not increased since then.
And if they awarded them to coaches, this would be her second, since she coached the gold medal 3x3 team in Tokyo.

My bad, I assumed coaches got them also. Remembering the picture from years ago with Coach K wearing them, but they were the players' he was wearing.

Edit: And I just saw your post on the other thread confirming that.

DWBB announced an open practice on October 5th. More details to come...

We now know the matchups for the Ball Dawgs Classic, the 4-team tournament this Thanksgiving.

First-round matchups for the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic have been announced with Duke set to square off against Kansas State on Monday, Nov. 25 at 3 p.m. (ET) at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nevada.

The other side of the bracket features Oklahoma and DePaul, with the contest between the Sooners and Blue Demons slated to tip off 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. The winners of the two games will advance to Wednesday's championship game, which will be played 30 minutes after the 2 p.m. (ET) consolation game.

Just thought I'd mention that Coach Lawson spoke at the Family Reception at Cameron on Freshman Move-In Day. She was very impressive generally and brought huge cheers upon introducing freshman forward Toby Fournier and predicting that Fournier would be the first female to ever dunk in a game at Cameron.

S#!T

USA lost Arianna Roberson in their first game of the day with a knee injury

That was yesterday and I can't find any more info. She did not play in the quarterfinals today, USA won 18-12 to move into semis. I believe it is at 12:20 if you want to watch. Obviously no subs for USA as they hopefully play 3 games today.

Well, that's pretty horrendous. Posts at The Boneyard have observers saying that it was a non-contact injury and that she is on crutches while watching the rest of the team play the elimination games. The US has made it to the final and will play either Germany or Japan this afternoon.

Arianna will get a gold medal, USA squeaks by Japan 21-19. I really hope she is ok.

Hat tip to Phredd3 for reminding me of The Boneyard and their obsessive coverage (which I admire, but do not have the time to share). I found this Instagram post there:

Note the knee brace. I was moderately concerned by how tightly Saniyah Hall (#6) holds Arianna Roberson's side in the above picture, but the below photo from this USA Basketball article shows that she can at least stand without support:

Meanwhile, GoDuke has the gold medal news but no mention of her injury:

It's been a week since Arianna's injury. Absolutely ridiculous that goduke has no information. This isn't HIPAA. The Duke "Chronicle" has nothing either.

Duke often seems to treat DWBB as an afterthought. Remember how long it took to show an actual full roster on the site last season?
