2024-2025 Men’s Basketball Season: General Offseason Discussion

Time for another bold prediction: By the end of the season, K2 will be playing more minutes than Caleb Foster.

Not trying to throw shade at Caleb, I just think Kon is a better fit with Coop and Tyrese. The numbers on KenPom from last year on lineups with Tyrese and Caleb on the floor together were the worst lineups we had. Maybe that had more to do with the fact that most those lineups didn’t include Jeremy, but it’s still concerning.

Perhaps Caleb improves a lot more than I’m expecting, or maybe just playing with Coop unlocks him, and this ends up looking like a dumb post, but damn, I don’t know how you keep a shooter like K2 on the bench.

Also just makes a lot of sense to me bringing Caleb off the bench to let him have more on ball reps.
Counter / not-so-bold prediction: Kon will have some promising glimpses in Nov and Dec yet barely see the light of day when ACC play begins…unless there are a couple blowout wins.

If anyone takes minutes from Caleb it will be Sion.

i dunno, that 2 seconds of footage showing Kon locking down RJ Davis and forcing him into an air-balled 3 ptr has me convinced that KK will be the team's best 1-on-1 perimeter defender.

I guess the question should be, how many minutes of playing time will it take for guys like; K2, Evans, Harris, and Pat to return for their sophomore seasons? I guess you could add Brown to that list as well even though he's not a freshman.

GoDuke!
With guys projected to go first round, we'd have to restrict minutes to get them back, unc-style.

This sounds like a difficult thing to balance, but it actually makes Jon's job much easier.

1. Sean Stewart played 8.3 mpg and transferred. Add a couple of minutes to ensure everyone returns: 10.3 mpg.
2. Dariq Whitehead and Dereck Lively played 20.6 mpg and went pro. Subtract a couple of minutes to make sure no one gets enough exposure to leave: 18.6 mpg.

Therefore, play the freshmen 10.3-18.6 mpg.

How many minutes to keep Coop from declaring? :ROFLMAO:

First time posting on the DBR forums. I became a Duke fan in my senior year while watching a GT vs Duke game in Atlanta (1980). I have had the pleasure of seeing Coach K's full Duke career play out in real time. To sum it up, he evolved and adapted to the NCAA experience better than most by making and owning very difficult player decisions. I think this attribute is in Jon and may be why Coach K has so much confidence in him. They are two fierce competitors who will always put the best team on the floor for the given condition. But it is way fun to speculate the possibilities.

You forgot to adjust for inflation.

This is what off seasons are for. Wild fantasies where .5% of them come true.

You have Duke showing him making 28/29 3's. You have Harris and Ngongba talking him up. Kon plays 3 positions and does too many thing well and is probably our best shooter. Because of our depth I don't see 25 min/gm but 20 is in range. Like every year the only thing that will keep him off the floor is Coach Will.

Don't forget Sion James calling him an "elite player". And Sam Vecenie saying he'll be our second best freshman and mocking him mid first round. This kid has breakout-star hype building all around him. I've got questions about his NBA upside, but I think his game is very college ready now. K2 island!

When Kon made his official visit he didn't scrimmage with the team because of a rolled ankle. At this point I more concerned of his playing time being effected by an injury than him not being good enough.

And the fact that no RSCI #15 guard has ever been benched like this at Duke. The indicators are starting to add up.

We have an embarrassment of talent this year. One way or another, I hope Jon finds a way to motivate and showcase all these guys. If we can cut down the nets at the end of the tourneys, it will help to smooth over any hurt egos over playing time. Let's just win, baby.

Apples and oranges. No RSCI #15 guard has faced anything remotely like this level of competition for minutes. Go back and look. Prior to this season, you could write an RSCI #15 guard into the lineup for 25 mpg in ink. There was no other option. Kon faces competition from Tyrese, Caleb, Evans, Cooper, Sion, Mason, and Darren. It's not crazypants to say at least 3 of those players are ahead of him on the depth chart.

K2 is competing for a starting spot with Gillis and Evans (recognizing James is likely playing starters minutes, 25mpg, sharing the 2 with Foster).

Once you accept this, his path to playing time becomes clear. 😎

Are you viewing Gillis as a 3 man? I have Gillis as a 4 man for about 22 min/GM which is what Painter played him the last 2 yrs. I think Cooper is a 22-25 min/GM at the 3 and 5-6 min the 4. I believe there is 15+ or so minutes available at 2 and 3 spots. I don't think Kon and Evans are competing with Gillis but obviously are competing at the 3 for minutes. Somebody is gonna half to spell Tyrese and I believe that is Foster so I think Kon and Sion are fighting for the 2 spot but I wouldn't rule out Kon being that 3rd ball handler.
