2024-2025 Men’s Basketball Season General Discussion

Projection? Everyone else is doing it so I will too.

In reality this is where an agent earns their fees. Someone in the program (ideally not the HC) is engaging with agents to gauge mutual interest. It's that whisper time of the year...
I can only assume our staff is doing the same . . .

It will be interesting to see this portal season if there are more "test the water" cases like Seth Trimble. My sense is that the bidding war for some of the top players last year was beyond anyone's expectation. I'm thinking of those top Centers that the Heels couldn't land.

And this year with fewer players and more roster openings, I wonder if agents will be pushing harder for all players to go portaling to get their full market value.
I wonder if and how the NIL market will reflect the bad ROI teams got on expensive portal targets like AJ Storr or Great Osobor vs the quality contributions from guys like Sion or Maliq who (I presume) commanded a much smaller payday.

Jon was able to prioritize those low usage, high efficiency/impact guys because he already had some very talented high usage guys onboard. Should be the same for us again this offseason. But yes, Sion may have been the greatest overall find in the portal. Every team could use a Sion.

Seen the Big12 tourney court?

Some people might call me boring, but I have generally had a good life living by the motto "keep it simple, stupid." Clearly whoever designed that floor should have done the same.

My guess is that while the coaching staff is involved and has input, Rachel Baker's office likely has primary responsibility for staying on top of the transfer "market" and teeing up possibilities to the coaches. Schrage may also have some more active and direct involvement, especially in terms of scouting and evaluation, but I tend to view this as part of the "roster construction role" that CBB GMs are expected to play.

Do you know for sure that Rachel is doing this? I'd be surprised. She's not a basketball person. If anyone, this likely falls under Mike Schrage.

Watching four games at once on YouTubeTV; never had that with spectrum. Only negative is that I’m about 30 seconds behind Moonpie23 in chat!

Right now, the Blie Devils are “out scoring” the other St. Francis (PA) 11-10 with 5:55 left in the first (half, not quarter.)

Asking -jk, in the UNC-W-Delaware game, UNC-W is in green, Delaware in blue. Isn’t that a color-blindness issue?

I doubt Rachel is personally involved but I suspect that her staff are and yes, likely work with Schrage on it. There is a lot of spade work to be done with the number of players in the portal and the amount of game tape out (and agents/reps) out there.

Nah, those two colors would be fine.

If I had to guess (and it's totally a guess), I would think Duke has a mini analytics department given the abilities of the student body / managers / engagement / etc. That department probably tracks hundreds of D1 players across the country and effectively screens them and filters them into buckets. Those buckets probably get fed to Schrage with input from Scheyer on what to target next year - with those conversations changing as things develop. Based on the targeted needs and Schrage's assessments, Baker's team probably then engages players through some sort of medium with a general interest level and some high level terms. If interest is reciprocated, I expect a formal negotiation is then done, and I suspect Duke is relatively sharp on its numbers and succinctness.

Best guess about how it works. At least how I'd design it.

^This is very likely the model - along with all the coaching staff, and probably some boosters, tossing player names at the analytics team for special consideration.

There would need to be someone to field inbound calls from agents and players trying to get on Duke's radar too - I imagine we get more than our share of those. And I wonder if any of Sion, Maliq or Mason were inbound calls, or if they were all outreach by Duke.

Whatever the exact model and roles, I imagine it's a pretty well-oiled machine.

You left out his discussion of his roster, which is bizarre. What a guy:

“50% of my roster or more is at least considering going in the portal, if not already knows what school they’re going to,” Hurley said. “And in a couple of those cases they’ve already talked to the coaching staff at a future school and have an idea of what their NIL is gonna be there.

""The force of the blown call literally knocked me to the ground is how I'm trying to justify it," Hurley said on "60 Minutes.""

Oh please 🙄
