2024-2025 Men’s Basketball Season General Discussion

ASU is going to lose (down 2w/three minutes to go) but they showed that they’re real, and obviously so are we

Listening to the “Field of 68” Saturday night program, someone reported that one of the Auburn players, when asked about the plane incident, said, “What do you expect when you get a bunch of dawgs on a plane?”

Both Auburn and Houston are packed with dawgs. Here’s how Google search engine AI answers, “what does it mean, in sports, to be a ‘dawg’?”

In sports, "being a dawg" means to have a fierce, competitive mentality, displaying relentless effort, grit, and determination, essentially never giving up even in tough situations; it's a compliment signifying a player who is tough, passionate, and always looking to dominate on the field or court.

I’d say the definition lacks a mention of “we take no guff and will be ready to fight at the drop of a hat” demeanor.

Duke will have played Kentucky, Arizona and Kansas by the time the Dawg Tigers come to town, so I think we’ll be ready, but they are quite dawgy.
I have no doubt that our old quad dawgs ("The Uncles") will be ready for the fight!

Kansas is still a work in progress in terms of their rotation and, currently, it feels like they may have the "too many players" problem. We also have this problem, but our 9-10 guys are freshmen. Self had the core of Harris, Adams and Dickinson and then, famously, brought in "the best group of transfers" with Mayo, Storr, Griffen and Coit. Unlike "the Uncles", I don't think these guys are "over themselves" and ready to play a supporting role. I think Self's going to have to use all his powers to keep everyone happy, but he is arguably the top dog in the sport so let's see if he can do it. For all his hype, I don't feel like Dickinson fits well on this team. I understand that he is a much better offensive player, right now, than Flory Bidunga, but when Bidunga is in there, they can really fly up and down the court. Also, I think Zeke Mayo is a really good player, but this team has been playing with the ball in Dajuan Harris' hands for years, and now they both have to share. Sometimes, on offense, you forget that Adams is out there. Don't get me wrong, they have tons of talent and Self is elite so this isn't an issue of not having the pieces. But, I think they are going to struggle with chemistry and role identification and, as a result, I think we benefit from seeing them early while this process is stil playing itself out.

Have you looked at Kentucky? They legit have 10 guys playing 13+ minutes and 0 guys playing more than 23. I know they have only had a couple blow out kinda games but this really does seem like what Mark Pope is going to do this year as it is far from clear that his starters are leaps and bounds better than the guys lower on the bench. I mean, he's got Kobe Brae and Kerr Krissa coming off the bench.

Gonna be really interesting to see what they do against Duke on Tuesday.

I haven't watched them yet, I am hoping to do some scouting with the on-demand version of the Bucknell game, but your stats about their minutes distribution seem to suggest that their rotation is quite expansive and undifferentiated...which is a little problem that the 2015 UK team famously ran into.

In perusing social media, it feels like Kentucky fans are pretty confident about Tuesday because "Duke relies on Freshmen". We'll see.

This was the minutes breakdown on Pope's BYU team last year. He plays a lot of guys.

Villanova has a player with the last name Brickus- not sure if his first name is Bigus.

You might have some memory of Jhamir Brickus. Last year he was at La Salle, and they played Duke as part of that much-maligned Blue Devil Classic, a fairly uncreative multi-team event with Southern Indiana and Bucknell.

Brickus had 13 points and 4 assists in a 95-66 loss. Tyrese Proctor led Duke with 22 points, and Sean Stewart somehow had a double-double (16 points and 10 rebounds) off the bench.

4 of the La Salle starters transferred to other programs, 2 with Duke connections: Brickus to Villanova, Khalil Brantley to Oklahoma State, Rokas Jocius to Johnny Dawkins and UCF, and Anwar Gill to Kenneth Blakeney and Howard.

Watching the Kansas MSU game is just as boring in person as it must be on TV. If I was at home I wouldn’t have to hear the drunk MSU fan behind me screaming that Hunter Dickinson’s mom is, umm, promiscuous. I’m team KU for the rest of this one.
