Born in Utah, reared LDS; undergraduate education at BYU; medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans; 3-year Army scholarship led to 6 years active duty in the Army and 6 years inactive ready reserve; did 3 years of general pediatrics before going to subspecialty training in infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, where I studied respiratory viruses (especially RSV), immunology, general virology, and vaccinology; first post-subspecialty training job was at DUMC, where I taught respiratory viruses and gastrointestinal viruses; moved to Virginia in 2000 and have been here ever since.
I have been following Duke basketball avidly since 1997, when I first arrived at Duke.
