Absolutely unreal game from Tatum. The 50 spot is obviously ridiculously good, but given the level to which the Celtics without Brown are having to ride him to just create offense out of nothing (though shoutout to Kemba tonight: he'd been pretty awful most of this spring, but he kept up his recent strong run of games in this one) and the fact that he's still playing legitimately really well defensively while shouldering a ridiculous offensive load, what he is doing is just sensational.

The number of possessions he saves by just doing some wild stuff one-on-one with a help defender at the rim is crazy. Like this one, where the defense is so petrified of how many options he now has from that position that Rui is flatfooted and Tatum just blows straight through to the rim, or this one the where he has to bail out of a sad PnR with Tristan Thompson and just launch a contested stepback three late in the shotclock, or especially this one, where he just chucks up some random nonsense hoping to draw a foul and is just good enough to sink it. Come on, man.

Nobody's going to accuse Rui of being quick on his feet on the perimeter or Davis Bertans of being a guy you fear on the closeout or Ish Smith of anything defensively, but the amount of tricks Tatum has in his bag is just outrageous. He can score from anywhere, and the Celtics are bad enough that he HAS to create offense from literally nothing with 10 seconds or less on the shotclock pretty much all the time. They don't have the guys to stick with the Nets (I'm guessing it's going to be ugly), but that doesn't take anything away from how good Tatum is now.

Also, I know this is Tatum's night, but shout out to Cassius Stanley doing Cassius Stanley things in Indiana! The Pacers have a ton of guys who play something close to the role he'll likely end up playing in the NBA right now, but here's hoping he'll get a bit more of an opportunity next year.

Happy for Tatum as a Duke fan, but as a Wizards fan, yuck. When Bertans isn't making shots (hello 0-7 from 3 tonight), he shouldn't be on an NBA floor, as evidenced by his team leading -23 +/-. And the Celtics ran screens that switched him onto Tatum over and over with very predictable results. When Stevens finds a mismatch he can exploit he is ruthless, and he has a perfect executioner in Tatum.

Tatum is such a good big game player. He rises to the moment. Maybe at some point he will get a chance to play in the NBA finals. He is inching into superstar territory.

Stevens is a really good coach. I hope the loud minority of Celtic fans who want him fired end up causing a disgruntled Stevens to want to look for a college coaching job in a couple of years

Stevens is a really good job. He just didn't do a good job this year. It happens.

Sadly, Grayson (5 min, 0 points) and Tyus (7 min, 5 points) played only small roles in Memphis beating the Spurs to advance in the play-in tourney. Neither Justise nor Tre got off the bench for the two teams.
Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

Plus/minus is an imperfect stat, but Jones and Allen were -16 and -17 in their limited minutes in a game the team managed to win by 4. I heard a Memphis beat writer say the team had really been trying to force the "Winslow experiment" and it had been to the detriment of Jones. Allen has had a career year, but did have a couple of painful end of game misses at the end of the season when Memphis was trying to solidify its playoff position (a couple of missed free throws and a missed dunk). Hopefully they can play well against Golden State.

The front page article is sadly wrong. The NBA is not counting the play-in games as the playoffs.

On a happier note, the Spurs-Grizzlies game is probably the first time a pair of brothers—-Tyus and Tre—-have met in a play-in game. I did not check for sure but there have not been many.

From your fingertips to god's ears. Grayson hit 2 crucial 3s in overtime to propel MEM to the OT win.
As for the Justise Winslow Experiment, he had a pretty miserable year. Far too much time injured to say much about whether "It's Over", or what, but he just hasn't been able to catch a break. He's played in less than 25% of total games over the last 2 years, and over his career has had 3 seasons in which he played over 75% of available games and 3 in which he played in (a combined total of) less than 25%. He's still quite young, so if his body can stop betraying him, he could have a fine career.

Ojeleye just set a new high-water mark for at least the last 30 years by playing the most minutes without registering a blocked shot by a player 6'6" or taller.

While he is a fairly stout defender (and unquestionably a stout human being at 6'6" 240 lb), Ojeleye played 950 minutes over 56 regular season games and did not register a single blocked shot.

The only other players who played meaningful minutes without blocking a shot are much smaller guards who played way fewer minutes than Ojeleye--Tyler Johnson (6'3", 684 minutes), Brandon Goodwin (6'0", 620 minutes), Ryan Arcidiacono (6'3", 450 minutes) and Langston Galloway (6'1", 438 minutes)

And here are some players ahead of the 26-year old, 6'6" Ojeleye on the blocked shots list this year:
    • Facundo Campazzo (5'10", 30 years old) - 14 blocked shots
    • Stephen Curry (6'3", 33 years old) - 8 blocked shots
    • Jordan McLaughling (5'11", 25 years old) - 6 blocked shots
    • Patty Mills (6'1", 32 years old) - 3 blocked shots
    • D.J. Augustin (5'11", 33 years old) - 1 blocked shot

In the last 30 years, the next closest mark from a player 6'6" or taller was Michael Redd in 2012, who played 770 minutes in his final, injury-riddled season.

Evidently the all-time record (since blocks became a recorded stat in 1974) belongs to former Cavs/Timberwolves/Wizards coach Randy Wittman, who played 1071 minutes in 1984 without blocking a single shot.
    Semi registered a block today...just a block.

Kings maybe should have drafted Luka instead of Bagley.

But if they had they'd be mis-using Donic and Bagley would be an all-star in Dallas.

Because it is the Kings we're talking about.

    WOW. Seven minutes played, 0 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals . . . 1 block.

Now that is pure comedy. The complete inverse of his regular season.
