So, Shakespeare was "meta" before it was cool? Self-referential before Arrested Development? Looking into the camera before The Office?
You mean direct address? Correct. Who do you think was meant to hear all those asides in her* work?

    *Emilia Bassano.

Note: I do not claim that she wrote the plays, not really, but I do think it is more likely than not that she influenced the plays and possibly collaborated and/or edited some of the work. She certainly knew Shakespeare. She is known to have spoken French and Italian. She was born in Italy and in her role as the daughter of a diplomat is known to have visited Elsinore Castle in Denmark. Some of her poems have survived. Three Shakespeare plays have characters named Emilia. No other English Renaissance plays, by any playwright, have characters named Emilia.

Organizations send me calendars. One I donated too, one is a company I've owned shares in. And the others? Well, I don't know, I'm probably on some list. I really do wish they all would stop.

Breakfast is a meal. Brunch is an excuse to day drink.

Guess this is the appropriate place for this, don't think it deserves its own thread though a number of us have Michigan connections.

UM President ousted by the Board of Regents. Never a good idea for the married boss to carry out an affair with an employee on the company email.

When I read the article on her in The Atlantic a couple of years ago, I got chills.

Agreed. It was an amazing article. It at least offers up plausible explanations for either a female author or a female collaborator.

I assume kids are taught never to get in a car if the driver offers them a knish, right?

They are now. This is how I ended up living in NC from my native land.
