The taste is complex. I can't really tell you what all it tastes like. When they say strong sour ale, they aren't kidding. It's pretty strong apple cider vinegar tart dominating for me. I had trouble appreciating much else. It's oaky. I thought it tasted more sour than saison. But I guess I could pick up some dry wine barrels. Maybe I should have let it warm more. Stella was excited about this, and I was pretty excited about the Sherry barrels. But honestly I thought that cognac one was much much better.

This is a good beer of course. Fuse Category 2. I have one more bottle if somebody wants to try it for a trade or whatever. But you'd need to really like sours I'd say.
    From last PM:

Saison Vielle-Brasserie Trois Dames (from Switzerland )

    Trader/gift from RJ199. Thanks!!

This is another one of those Saisons that sure smells and tastes like a sour.

RJ199 has a pretty complete review above. I thought (imagined? ) some sour cherries (raspberries?) along with some wet hay/straw from the Brett conditioning along with some cab flavors initially from the wine foudre, finishing with mild sherry tastes from a year of aging in Jerez barrels (I had to research that .). ABV is variable, too, at 7.5% on the front label and 8% on the back label . The cognac barrel-aged "saison" was a tad better but this was still quite good.

It's been a looong 2 days, I'm finishing my second beer of the evening and feeling a bit uninhibited. No harm/foul/ill feelings/impatience intended.

Because the name and label are worth a glance in addition to the beer being rather tasty:

For the Ymm, Beer-sters, here's the current status of our September host:

    "mattman91
    On Holiday"

Should we appoint/volunteer a substitute host for October's Virtual Pub and then have mattman try again in November, assuming his "vacation" is a short one?

Uh oh. I saw he got into a fray on the 2020 thread. Might have earned a short vacation.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised I haven't earned one myself this summer. It's been a tough off season.

Mattman is alive and well on a short "vacation" in NC and not in a foreign prison, returning tomorrow AM. He's pondering the option of hosting again this month or nominating someone else for October and re-enlisting for November.

That'd make him a tan mattman. Or would that be a matttanman?

Style-special variant; foeder aged Farmhouse Saison (aka oak-aged "whiskey sour" with limes)
Format-500 ml bottle (hey, it's Saison day but for you Americanos, that's 16.9 ounces )
    Stemware-my lovely Ommegang tulip
    Appearance-light amber with a thin, off-white head
    Nose-limeade; wood; light bourbon
    Mouthfeel-smooth
Tastes-limeade again first, then some pears and apples, wet wood, soft bourbon flavors, finishing with lime zest
    IBU-probably 20
    ABV-4.8%
Overall impression-another outstanding creation from Haw River
Ymm, Beer rating-Fuse Cat 3; I could drink a couple of these a night; highly recommended

This is actually a late entry for an after dinner beer. I've got room for one more. I think.
    Minimal head.
Beautiful burnished gold in the glass.

Nose is sour, sweet and lime, with a little bit of hay thrown in for good measure.

The finish cold is subtle- light whiskey and bright lime.

Initial sip is crisp lime up front. For a fairly low ABV beer, there is some tongue numbing alcohol at the end.

Perhaps its the power of suggestion, I like devildeac’s callout of “wet wood”. Usually wood aged beers have a dry finish for me. I’m curious why this would taste differently.

The lime is really prominent. Mouthfeel is very thin. This is an outstanding beer, and my whiskey familiarity is limited to have a decent vocabulary.

This is not a “big” or complex whiskey taste. I’d make the assertion that it is a quality whiskey flavour lacking in barrel aging. I’d idly speculate that longer aged whiskey would have added complexity and weight.

I am really enjoying this beer. Many thanks to richardjackson for finding it, and devildeac for delivery.

Haw River remains a world class brewery, and the Rusted Plow Whisky Sour variant is just another in a long list of beers that prove it.

    Cheers! 🍻

Day Two of Mecktoberfest is as equally pleasing as the first.

A desert island beer; can’t ever see getting tired of this beer.

Clean, simple, refreshing and caramel. Love it!

    Another Richmond review

Ardent X IPA, from the accfan collection. I have decided I’m a massive fan of Citra and Mosaic hops. Bright yellow with a bit of haziness. Terrific bite and bitterness. The IPA market is super-crowded, but this is a standout. Cat 3. Really enjoyed it.
