Evidently, there have been rumors that Tyrese Hunter, a top transfer from Iowa State, was heading to UNC. Someone tweeted they wouldn't believe it until Andrew Slater tweeted it (Slater has a very good track record of accurately, but cryptically, tweeting news that has yet to break. He responded, not so cryptically with a clip from Public Enemy saying "Don't believe the hype".

This is the time of year with allot of balls in the air and Slater has had a couple of other interesting tweets that can be seen at the link. If you enjoy trying to figure out his tweets you may want to take a look. Otherwise skip them and the rest of this post. Some, including me, enjoy trying to figure out what he is hinting at.

When asked where Emoni Bates was headed he tweeted a picture of Robert Deniro from Casino. Some are guessing Nevada. I thought Deniro, in his bright pink suit, reminded me of Bruce Pearl (but that's just me, literally).

This tweet references a report that top 2025 SF Jason Asemota would visit Duke in the next 2-3 weeks (also scheduled to visit unc). He responded with a gif of Viggo Mortensen that says "bet against that". I'm not sure how he would know Asemota wouldn't make a visit he just scheduled, so the meaning is up for interpretation. Jason is from Arizona, which decreases the chances he would come East, so perhaps the movie's name, "Eastern Promises" holds some relevance (although Duke did get Pablo to come East, among others). The prominence of Gonzaga and a resurgent Arizona (courtesy of their former assistant) could make getting top recruits from the West coast more difficult in the future. I was very glad to see Scheyer land an international recruit in Proctor who Tommy Lloyd wanted.

The Ivy policy has exempted Covid years from that rule. A few Ivy athletes are playing 5th years as grad students.

Why would he go there unless Love was leaving?

Independent study program? Better NIL opportunities?

It was a long time ago and perhaps different rules, but I thought Crawford Palmer graduated a year early and spent his final year of eligibility at Dartmouth as an MBA student.

I checked his stats -- Crawford Palmer sat out a year. He played at Duke 1988-1991 and with the Big Green in 1992-1993

Palmer has both an NCAA championship ring and an Olympic medal (silver, for France in 2000). Along with Laettner. Hill. Boozer. Others?

I think that’s it. Kyrie has a medal and an NBA ring, but no college ring.

Though Mason Plumlee has an NCAA ring and a World Championship gold, and Cook and Battier have NCAA and NBA rings.

    Duke lands a transfer!!

    Not the dudes, the women...

Reigan Richardson was a McD All-American in high school. She had a decent first year at UGA but decided to move on and has committed to be a part of The Sisterhood.

Some were connecting the two - Hunter to UNC means Love leaving. But for now at least it appears to be an unfounded rumor.

Have seen Love in 2 Mock Drafts at 42 and 46. Had seen Moore at 28 goIng to Golden State but this morning unless it is a mistake they have Keels at 28 and Moore at 32.
I think Love will go if he is an early second round pick.

It may have been used earlier, but the first I noticed it was during this season. All in the Family

Thanks. I was pretty sure Mason won a gold, but forgot to check the FIBA side of the equation.

We probably need a list of multiple champions -- NCAA, FIBA, Olympic. Good off-season topic.

And some oddities: Does hoopster Dick Groat get credit for multiple championships with two World Series rings? Or what about Palmer's silver, not gold, in the Olympics? or the Duke guys on both the 1991 and 1992 teams?

Michigan transfer Brandon Johns has committed to VCU, per his IG page. Sneaky good get for Mike Rhoades.

    Terrence Shannon to Michigan

This is one of the biggest dominos to fall in the portal to date: Terrence Shannon is (semi-officially) headed to Ann Arbor.

Call me a homer if you want, but pending some lingering NBA decisions Michigan could once again be a Top 5 team preseason (although we all know the rollercoaster that led to this year). With Shannon, Michigan's could trot out a Starting 5 of Frankie Collins (a highly touted rising sophomore who showed major potential filling in as a starter in the Tourney), Shannon, Caleb Houstan, Moussa Diabate, and Hunter Dickinson: that's returning 3 of 5 starters from a Sweet 16 team while adding a transfer starter from another Sweet 16 team. And unless this triggers some other transfers, the squad would be deep, returning two players who saw non-trivial (and sometimes critical) minutes in Kobe Bufkin and Terrence Williams, plus a Top 10 recruiting class. There's still the potential that any/all of Houstan, Diabate, and Dickinson go pro, but Houstan and Diabate would be second round dart-throws on potential, while Dickinson would be facing going undrafted (but could get major NIL dollars if he returns... Michigan is a sleeping NIL giant with one of the largest alumni networks in the country). If I had to guess, I think the most likely scenario is that Houstan at least tests the waters (he was a projected lottery pick entering the year and may want to see whether that potential still holds water), but if he leaves Bufkin or incoming Top 50 recruit Jett Howard (yes, Juwan's son) could slot into that 5th starter's spot.

I also have to think (hope?) that the complete lack of interest in Shannon from Duke may mean we are operating under the assumption Trevor is back, considering how nicely he would've slotted in as a starting 2 guard.

Hey @Scott - looks like Shannon's AAU coach accidentally tweeted out a congratulatory tweet on picking Michigan. It's been deleted now. Looks like you're picking up a good one
