Henry Coleman and Texa A&M playing Kentucky on ESPN. Not a Buzz fan, but would like to see Coleman do well and KY lose. HC has 8 early points with 5 rebounds (he averages 10 and 6).
Joey Baker’s about to get a chance to make a major impact for Michigan: Jett Howard has gone down with an ankle injury and is out for the second half against Minnesota. Baker started the second half
This didn't age well, apparently: https://twitter.com/roundballpod/sta...39324646412289
He was trending on twitter, not for a good thing. Missed a wide open layup off a steal which Minn converted for a 3. Lots of rough comments including
"Joey Baker missing a wide open layup and it leading to a Minnesota three sums up the whole season"

Joey starting for the injured Jett Howard for Michigan against No. 1 Purdue right now. The Wolverines will need some big shots to have a chance.

I m glad they are all getting chances. Kinda hard to see what role they would be playing had they stayed at Duke.

Had Coleman stayed at Duke, I assume that Ryan Young would not have transferred in, although they don't play exactly the same position. I like what Ryan is doing for this team a lot, but I think HC may bring something that Duke needs that Ryan doesn't: defensive athleticism. HC also brings a bit more diversity to the court, although Ryan is exceptionally good at FG% around the rim, very good at Oboarding, and pretty good at overall rebounding.
Had Jaemyn stayed it's somewhat unlikely that Mitchell would have come. Their stats this year are quite similar, although Mitchell seems like the more athletically gifted player. I don't remember Jaemyn standing out on defense, but maybe he has become a solid defender. We know that Mitchell is.
I can imagine that Joey Baker might have the exact same role that he had last year and apparently has this year at UM. This team desperately needs a 3pt shooter, and he could play paired with Lively since they would kinda offset each other's weaknesses.
None of this is to say that I would rather have those 3 on this year's team than the players we do have. I just think that their presence would probably negate the arrival of a couple of players, and that the difference between them and the players who currently fill their roles isn't that large.
Yeah, we almost certainly don't get Young if a junior Coleman is still around. The issue for Coleman was the return of Williams along with the arrival of Banchero and Griffin and to a lesser degree John for the 2022 season. Coleman saw that he definitely wasn't going to start in 2022, and was likely going to be limited to 10-15 mpg off the bench. And the situation wasn't likely to change for 2023, as Duke was surely going to recruit top-tier frontcourt players for the 2023 season too.
It sucked to lose Coleman and Brakefield. But that's the challenge when recruiting in that range (the 25-75ish range of the recruiting rankings) while also consistently landing the top-tier guys. Those guys know they can go elsewhere and start immediately, so it's hard to keep them for 3-4 years. Sometimes we get lucky: guys like DeLaurier and Baker stayed 4 years as backups; O'Connell stayed 3; heck even a fringe top-10 guy like Bolden stayed 3 years as a backup. But often those guys leave: Jeter, Coleman, Brakefield, Tucker, etc. We just can't count on those guys being willing to play small roles for 2-3 years in hopes that they'll become starters down the road.
This will almost certainly be a discussion we will be having in April this year regarding Jaden Schutt and perhaps even Jaylen Blakes. Duke has a lot of backcourt talent coming in Foster and McCain. There is at least some chance that Proctor sticks around for another season. How long with Schutt wait to get minutes? Now that Blakes has shown he can play at this level, will he want to play somewhere that will offer his a larger role?
I suspect that Scheyer's more liberal use of the bench this season may be an incentive to guys to stick around longer.
