    Duke v. Kentucky

In the time-honored tradition of the DBR Board, where discussion of 'que is always "on topic," I offer this glimpse of a college project many here would undoubtedly have enjoyed if it had been an option at Duke during the time we were in school...

The cultural anthropology of BBQ would make for interesting independent study.

I noticed these guys aren't even going to Kentucky.

    Thumbs up

Pretty dang good music from that site. Where does it come from? Wow! My chair is bouncing across the floor. To keep it playing I just reload the page, and the chair starts bouncing again. If their BBQ is that good I may switch my preference.

Edit -- These guys were in Greensboro yesterday, and they already posted about Stamey's. Yessir, I don't like there BBQ choices, but there music choices would be on my Ipod if I had one. Lexington? They use ketchup, don't they?

    No credibility at all

Sorry, but as far as I am concerend they have no credibility at all. They are coming to the triangle area in NC and are not going to Allen & Son's? It is one of the few places left anywhere that still only uses wood (actually only uses hickory). Anyone who knows their 'Que can tell the difference between gas and wood cooked meat. No stop at Allen & Sons = no credibility.

By the way, Greg Cox (the very good restaurant critic for the N&O - which makes him one of only a very few reasons left to even read the N&O anymore, recently did his list of the 25 best restaurants in the triangle. Since they were listed alpahbetically, instead of being rank-ordered, guess what was on the top of the list? Allen & Sons.

I agree about the music. I'd really like to know what it is.

Good pick up (and comment!) about the article and the n+o. My wife showed me that this AM.

Hey, I'm an anthropologist in Kentucky. They OUGHT to come to Kentucky, but maybe not to Lexington. There's a really nice corner in Paducah that has some nice BBQ. No storefront... just a guy off the back of his trailer. VERY nice BBQ.

    Cheers,
    Lavabe

P.S. Wish I thought of this project first.

I can't imagine them going to Greenville and Goldsboro and not stopping in Wilson at Parker's or Bills BBQ.

On the topic of bbq..my personal favorite is Backyard BBQ Pit in Durham.

Think it beats Allen & Son's any day of the week, and has excellent sides (like the cabbage and collards myself)

My favorite bbg in Durham was at the parties at Bill Hawkins farm back in the day. Pit cooked all day over hickory. What a blast.

The sides at Allen & Son are average. the desserts are too sweet. the entrees other than BBQ are not all that good. There is no reason to go except for the BBQ. But that reigns supreme.

I searched and this was the thread I came up with but I'd swear there were two or three (or more?) others. Found these couple items today:

100% agree! Way better than Allen & Son's. I am tired of going to Allen & Son's and getting huge chunks of cartilage and other inedible junk in my barbecue. Backyard BBQ Pit is consistently awesome and, yes, they use wood. And their sides are just outstandingly good home style cooking. Mmmmm, mmm!

I agree 100%. Backyard BBQ Pit is far superior to Allen & Son's and is the best in the Triangle Area.

I've heard that, too, and I am over 1000 miles away! I thought the BBQ at Allen & Son's was terrible, but then, what do I know.

Since devildeac came up with a few good links, here's one for those in the neighborhood:

    http://www.texasmonthly.com/newslett...row/index.html

But you better act fast, as it will most assuredly sell out in 3 or 4 hours, like it did the first two times.

It's funny, now that I cook so much of my own bbq I rarely buy it anymore..but I love to stop in to Wilber's on my way to Durham for a bag full of hushpuppies to keep my happy during my ride. Recently I stopped in to Moore's here in New Bern (http://www.mooresbarbeque.com/Welcome.html) for just that reason. I've never tried their 'cue, but loved their hushpuppies!

I got myself a Big Green Egg for Father's Day, changed my world.

Still, can't replicate Lexington sauce yet. But trying. . . .

Very cool. I've never smoked on one, but we see a few during our competitions. I'd hate to be one of those teams that have to pack that thing up, they weigh a ton! Although if I did have one it wouldn't have been blown off my deck like one of my current ones was in this week's storms. Grrrrr..

flippedgrill.jpg That one is pretty heavy in its own right, but not "green egg heavy".
