I have seen those stats but that is a great representation of it. Trump supporters rallied around their fear regarding the horrors of socialism yet they are clearly net takers.

I see a reordering of the American population with populism maintaining a hold in the Republican Party and the Democratic Party moving to a center-left coalition...which will anger progressives but if managed correctly would yield a relatively dominant center-left hegemony. Is the Georgia recount being released live? I saw that about 1/3 of the counties have finished, but nothing about whether any numbers changed in the 50 counties.

I think a socially moderate, science-respecting, ACA-improving (not reversing), civil Republican that didn’t lie all the time and mock the disabled would have 0 problem changing the suburban tide. I think many suburban voters would be happy to vote for a fiscally conservative, free market, pro-trade Republican that cleared what seems like an otherwise low bar.

Trumpers would call them RINOs, not knowing the history of the party. I would call them traditional Republicans. “Hello old friend, it’s really good to see you once again.”

We have the ones out in the open: Romney, Kasich, Ben Sasse, and Larry Hogan.
We have the ones that are maybe camouflaged: Tim Scott, Pat Toomey and John Thune.
We have the ones that in hidding: Jeb Bush
We have the ones that are figurative dead: Graham, and Cruz.

Careful what you wish for. This kind of stuff could result in more popularity to things like OANN. The QAnon-supporting people that emerged over the past year feel like villains teased in a post-credit scene for the next movie (does DBR consider being anti-QAnon partisan?). We'll see.

Wanted to read but have to subscribe. Would be curious to see a summary. Trump really improved margins with the rural Latino community and am looking forward to the analysis as to what motivated the change.

I wonder if Trump’s appeal is not just to white non-college educated people but the entire segment regardless of race. We will have to wait for a demographic breakdown of voters. It is a group that feels marginalized and worried about their place in an evolving USA.

I think this may be behind their turn to Trump and the GOP. Almost all immigrant groups eventually start feeling this way after they’ve been in the US for a significant amount of time and have had several generations born here.

It’s kind of like “I’ve got mine (citizenship or at least the right to work and live here); we don’t need more immigrants coming here. They’re just competition for us. We’re good, thanks.” I’ve got to say I can’t really blame them for thinking this way. It’s human nature.

Some reporting on election results from the largely Hispanic border counties here in South Texas. Contrast this with the I-35 corridor which got bluer this election. I know the county I live in, somewhere between 60-65% Hispanic, was bluer this time around, 58% to 40% vs. 53% to 40% in 2016.

I don't disagree that the party you describe would appeal to more suburban voters, but I don't think that's where the GOP is headed. One hopes that the next GOP nominee is honest and civil, but socially conservative populism appears to be the short to medium-term future of the Republican Party.

YBT's post is evidence that the "emerging Democratic majority" narrative is overly simplistic. While its true that young voters, Black voters, and Hispanic voters all currently tilt heavily toward the Democrats, there's no reason to believe that demographic voting behavior can't change, even in the short-term. It's not difficult to imagine a socially conservative, populist version of the GOP that's weaker with white suburban voters but stronger with Black, Hispanic, religious, blue collar, and rural voters.

There's already been a trend of conservatives jumping away from Fox News. Specific examples included election night, when people jumped to Newsmax after Fox News called Arizona (https://www.newsweek.com/fox-news-ar...-trump-1544688), and after Fox News cut away from the press secretary's allegations that Democrats "welcome fraud and illegal voting".

Conservatives (and liberals) continue to demand that news coverage aligns with what they believe, and when it doesn't, they seek out coverage that does align. If OAN and/or Newsmax draws away any of the popular Fox News commentators, and/or if the President throws his weight behind another network, how Fox News responds to that will be interesting to watch.

The more disturbing development is that many partisans no longer accept being told that what they believe is wrong, even when the facts do not back up those beliefs. News networks are more and more willing to cater to that. That feels like an incredibly dangerous, possibly irreversible, trend.

Yeah, I'm seeing a number of FB posts about being done with Fox News and switching to Newsmax and OAN "forever." Of course, those FB posts are from people who promised they were heading to Parlor months ago. [Shrug]

Parler makes you send them a photocopy of your driver's license (or other photo ID) along with a selfie to sign up. The irony is delicious.

I saw an article about how the folks who founded Parler did not intend for it to be a right wing conspiracy site and that they are trying to get liberals to sign up. The article also mentioned what you had to do to sign up (Id and selfie) and that in some ways, they have stricter rules than FB/twitter on what you can post, it doesn't have to be true but they aren't going to let violent groups recruit there, or some such. Not signing up to find out, that's for sure! (I ain't giving a photocopy of my driver's license to any website, thank you very much.)

Trumpism pre-dated Trump. He did what he does best: put his name on it, claim it’s his and make money on it.
