Here's my mini review of Sergei Medvedev's "The Return of the Russian Leviathan," which is interesting and, though written in 2017, pretty on-point.
A Russian patriot’s guide to the perversions of Putin and his era. It all starts with the deep sense of loss and, well, emasculation, felt by many Russians following 1989. For many Russians, the fall of the USSR was less about communism and more about the end of the Russian Empire, the shrinking of their presence on the map and in world politics. This pathology is not entirely new, as seen in the often-unseemly ends of the empires of Britain, France, and Portugal, to name just a few, but the death rattle of the Russian empire is most important in today’s politics. Let’s hope they grow up in a decade or two.
