Ymm, Beer

In Asheville until Sunday and just scored three crowlers of porter. Saving one for Thanksgiving. It’s all good.

Which brews? Reports to follow?

The standard porter with hints of chocolate blended with expresso. Exceptionally smooth dark ale, my favorite of all porters I’ve tasted in my travels around the US. The same server from three months ago when we were here told us to buy six packs to save money. The taste of the draft we told him is well worth the price difference. To offset the calories, we walked a three-mile trail from the River up to the Biltmore House, through the garden and back down the hill. Gotta love the Biltmore, an American treasure.

I can still recall my first Hardywood beer.
A bourbon barrel aged gingerbread stout.

It was like Hardywood had captured magic in a bottle.

Mind blowing in ways similar to experiences with Bell’s Hopslam, my first Allagash Confluence, the original BBA Mother Earth Tripel Overhead, as well as beers from The Bruery and Brewery Bhavana.

I could go on.

Instead I will focus on what is in the glass at hand.

Pretty sure its a 2019 BBA GBS.

The cork eased out of the bottle with little resistance.

The bourbon nose is strong, overpowering any spice.

Freaggin’ Christmas in a bottle is quite subdued compared to my memory.

Bourbon and ginger dominate.
The finish is a lovely array of cookie spices.

I’m not sure if its my palate (ever present allergies) or the bottle.
I’ve never had a bad Hardywood beer, and while this bottle is no exception, it underwhelms compared to my memory of prior GBS delight.

I’ll not let the ghosts of Hardywood past spoil my enjoyment of this world class beer.

I bet it was from Green Man. Their porter was my husband's favorite when we lived in Asheville. A true classic!

Quite surprised the first one you had was the BBA version. Not sure how many years they brewed GBS before they started all their wonderful variants.

Going to Hardywood tomorrow to pickup the 2020 extra BBA GBS, will sample one on draft and report. So many exceptional variants, but always a favorite. With the sh$&%!t storm 2020 has been, I can take some solice in knowing another holiday season will be enjoyed with friends and family and GBS.
