There is an excellent argument that with so many folks going for President, the Dems are throwing away their chance to win the Senate in 2020. Candidates like Abrams in Ga, Beto (and Castro) in Texas, and Hickenlooper in Colorado would be exceptionally strong Senate candidates in their home states. It is at least somewhat likely that they will be out of contention for President early enough to allow them to jump into the other race, I suppose, but "they didn't really want this, this seat is just a consolation prize for them!" could be an effective attack in that case.

There would still be time to make waves in the presidential race and also run a successful senate campaign. Marco Rubio proved that. It's not a path I would recommend, but it is doable.
I agree with you and think someone like Abrams would be better served focusing on the senate solely.
