Thanks for all your great responses. Speaking of saving gas, has anyone seen the new Honda FCX Clarity? It will only be available for lease in Southern California at first, as it runs on a hydrogen cell that only has filling stations in three towns in SC, including Santa Monica. Honda's goal is someday to have houses run on this power, thus having a filling station in your own garage. Pretty cool, eh?

Also, there are so many bright and environmentally concious people on this website...anybody going for the $10M from Progressive Direct for building the 100 mpg car?

Thanks, everybody, for your great advice. I'll pass this list along to my dad with confidence. I'm sure he'll test drive most of the cars recommended here. Thanks again.
Not that it matters, but here's another vote for the Mazda. Just a great car. I have a 2004 model with 75K miles on it and it still drives great. Nothing but routine maintenance. Very peppy and fun to drive. We have the hatchback and it is also very convenient and easy to load things in and out of... Really great car. Would buy another.
