Peter Alliss has died at 89

One of my highlights of the golf year was listening to him on The Open.

    R.I.P.

I was saddened to hear this news. He was great fun to listen to.

RIP, Peter. One of the all-time greats in the broadcast booth, but also a fine player with an impressive resume.

His Hall of Fame induction speech in 2012 is worth a watch. But you MUST watch to the end:

    Priceless!

And of course, he is the originator of the phrase "Nice putt, Alliss!" which he uttered to himself but was picked up by a nearby microphone as he left a putt short. Of course every golfer who has played since that day, utters the phrase "Nice putt, Alice!" as in you've left a putt woefully short, implying you hit it like a girl, rather than like a big, strong man. A bit sexist and not acceptable in today's world. And today's lady golfers are wonderful putters and hit the ball off the tee much further (farther?) than I ever have.
    Ozzie, your paradigm of optimism!

I have played very little golf, but even I have heard that phrase. I had no idea where it came from. Thanks for relaying that little anecdote.

Thanks for that bit of information on where that phrase came from. I'd always thought it was "nice putt, Alice" for the reason you mentioned. Other phrases I've heard on the golf course; someone hits a hook shot/drive and my buddy would say, "some of my best friends are hookers", "did your skirt fly up in your face on that putt?", "next time take the putter cover off the putter before you putt". There are many more but I can't think of them because I'm not on the golf course.

    GoDuke!
