    2009 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino

    Terrific with Christmas Eve beef roast with horseradish sauce. Has aged really well. A beautiful color with just a tinge of brownish hue on the edges. Cherry, plum, a bit of leather. Very tasty.

    A ten year old Brunello ought to be fabulous.

    Going to be Four Graces Pinot Noir 2017 with a steak tip dinner.

    Lush cherry and dark fruit without being at all sweet.
    An excellent Pinot with a Costco pricepoint discount.

    Kirkland’s champagne is mildly overrated.
    I found it to be sweeter than I prefer.

    Still a good value and tasty.

    Had the Apothic Red Blend aged in whiskey barrels with a bone-in rib eye for New Years last night. I liked it, very different and a bit boozy, but went well with the steak.

    Not surprisingly, I’m a big fan of wines from Blenheim Vineyards (outside Charlottesville). Some really solid juice. Had their Claim House Red tonight with pizza. Really tasty. The Painted Red offering is also quite good.

    It’s the proprietor’s 53rd birthday, so cheers to 2017 Blenheim Merlot (which happens to be quite tasty, with nice acidity and black tea notes underlying the bit of cherry & plum).

    2016 Lamas Ritchie Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina)

    Nice & floral. Not overly tannic. Dark red fruit flavors. Terrific with beef & broccoli stir fry. Another year or so of aging will probably make this even better.

    For us, tastes of 2018 Hartford Court RRV Chardonnay and 2015 Bedrock Old Vine Zin, both bottles opened a day or two ago. My wife thought the OVZ had lost something with age, and even more with time open, but the Chardonnay is still balanced and smooth. Have to try something new later this week.

    What do you think of wines aged in bourbon (or other liquor) barrels?

    I like the Apothic Red Blend aged in whiskey barrels the best. I also like the Firebrand Red aged in bourbon barrels. I didn't get much from the 19 Crimes Red aged in Rum barrels. All are in the $10-$15 range.

    I bought a couple of Agitator Cabs aged in bourbon barrels, coolest bottle by far. However it's pricer at $25 or so and I didn't like it nearly as much as the Firebrand. That's the extent of my barrel aged wine knowledge.

    2014 Lustra Chardonnay (Santa Lucía Highlands, CA)

    Very tasty. Not terribly oaky. In fact, my degenerate-level pie bet would be that this is stainless steel aged. Great with roast chicken and mashed potatoes.

    Personally, I'm not generally a fan. If I want liquor, I'll have liquor. I like wine to taste like wine for the most part, and I don't go for many "flavored" types of any sort. The extra finishes and so on sort of seem a bit gimmicky to me.

    But, that's just me. Drink what you like is always my mantra.
