Why Would They Keep Overfeeding Him?

If you were nicknamed "the half-ton man" and couldn't even get out of bed, feed, or clean yourself, because you weighed over 1200 pounds, and depended on your family to feed you, why wouldn't the family simply cut back on the amount of food they gave you, so that you would be forced to lose weight by virtue of a restricted caloric intake-- even if you have no willpower, your family members would seem like they could have it for you-- if for no other reason than that they no longer wanted to feed and clean your fatbutt. I don't get this one at all:

I don't think you can get that heavy without some sort of medical malady outside from over-eating.

I don't know the history on this particular story. But I have seen enough similar stories to know that families often take the enabler role and to allow the overeating. I have seen the same thing with housebound alcoholics that the family worries about their drinking, but keeps on buying the alcohol.
