An 85 year old veered into my yard and crashed into my steel and concrete mailbox at 7 am. How’s your morning?

He’s okay, shaken up and embarrassed. He was driving his granddaughter to school. Hit his son in laws mailbox on the way out of the driveway then veered into our yard. Not sure what was up. He seemed cogent but scary because we have young children who play in the yard.

Glad everyone is OK. Well, except for the mailboxes.

Had to use a truck to get it out of an absolute wad of concrete.

Today, a 7th grader returned from Spring Break to tell me, "Y'know, I think Colorado is mostly a pretty flat and boring state."

    Lloyd Christmas over here, amirite?

Sometimes the difference between "ok to drive" and "not ok to drive" is swift and sudden. At 85, just because Grandpa was fine to drive yesterday does not mean he is fine to drive today.

That’s my worry / concern. I hope the family has a conversation tonight. There are lots of kids in our cul de sac and this happened at 7 am. Scary.

If the family regularly relies on Grandpa to drive his granddaughter to school, they will not be having that discussion tonight. Children have as hard a time accepting new limits in their parents' abilities as the parents do. Let's hope either a son-in-law or a daughter-in-law is willing to be the bad guy.

After a particularly scary drive by my dad getting my mom home from a local shopping trip, my mom (who never learned to drive) simply told my dad to hand over the car keys. He also knew it was time and obliged. He never drove again. They had a support group of children and grandchildren who happily became their chauffeurs.

On another note, the previous owners buried their mailbox in a stupid amount of concrete and I’m busted from sledgehammering it. Seriously, could not lift the base until we reduced it by half. And then it took 2 of us to get in the truck.

Who drops 500 pounds of concrete for a mailbox? The UPS dude rolled up while we were at and laughed, “seems excessive for a mailbox “ he said.

    WTH?!?!
