We should have a contest. Get everybody to post and then award someone a big gasbagger trophy.

Or we could put on a show?

Haiku! You would think that spending 3 years as a kid in Japan would have helped me with this. Best I can do poetry wise is something based off Roses are red.

    Enjoy!

I had been of the mindset that, having been to Hawaii multiple times* as a kid, there were other places I would go first before going back there. Now that I have a nephew stationed there, I'm re-thinking that.

    * It was on the way when we would come back to the States to see family over summers. I've had such a rough life.

    Little-known fact:
A proper haiku doesn't actually have to be in the 5-7-5 syllable format, because the Japanese language measures "sounds" (which are themselves tricky to define in translation), rather than syllables.

Smartypants. The 5-7-5 rule is hard enough as it is for us ignorant gaijin without having to worry about exceptions or translations.

I have a colleague who is a haiku master of sorts, having traveled to northern Japan to study the art form. My school's students heavily populate the winners list at the Haiku Society of America's annual competition every year.
