Ughhhhhh. I actually read most of my assigned literature in high school. I did not enjoy Silas Marner. Spurred a lifelong hatred of looms.

I love Richard Scarry for younger readers. Good vocabulary building and kids love staring at the pictures, so you can really turn your brain off for a little while and just let them explore.
Personal favorites are Cars and Trucks and Things That Go and What Do People Do All Day?.

I think I still have both of those. Wasn't Cars and Trucks AKA The Goldbug Book? I rocked at finding Goldbug.

I read a lot of those books to Nephew John. Lowly Worm was a favorite character.

He had another book that ended with "Now, it is time for all good bears to go to bed". He would always cry because he knew he had to go to bed then.

I dunno about overall smell, but I do know that when you drive past paper mills (formerly numerous in Maine) and meatpacking plants (I'm looking at you, Iowa) the stink can be unbearable.

Feed lots - definitely hate getting a flat tire by a pig feed lot. They stink more than the cow feed lots.

(Spoken from 17 trips by bicycle across the state. They smell bad to me but like money to others.)
