NCAA Div 1 FCS Championship Report

Just returned from downtown Chatt where App State just dismantled Delaware. It was hard to believe from the score (49-21, never very close), but the total yards were very similar (ASU over 500, Delaware over 400), and the score difference wasn't due to turnovers.

A few random thoughts to follow. But first: maybe I'm old, maybe I don't remember what it was like, but the ASU fans were the most whiny and foul-mouthed classless fans I've ever heard. Any call that went against them - no matter how obvious (e.g., late hit) - they cursed and declared that they were so good the refs had to help the other team, as ESPN's request. This occurred with regularity. I understand being a homer when a call is close - I recall at Duke the "ref, you suck, you really really suck" chant. But these guys were at that for every call. Ever heard of a sore loser? These guys were sore winners.

They also nearly prevented the game from being completed, having gone over the wall (police crowd control gets an F-; they didn't even try).

    OK, that said:

ASU's team was fast. Once past the line of scrimmage, they often broke free for long and Delaware rarely caught up with them.

Their QB (Edwards) executes play fakes really well, so much better than UD's.

The ratio of beards to fans was very high. The Mountaineer mascot is well chosen, for half the male undergrads look just like him. Don't ask about the girls, but I think the homecoming queen was chewing tobacco. Just kidding.

Chattanooga has a nice site for it and had record (for Chatt) attendance - I think the count was 23,010. But their loudspeaker/PA was malfunctioning over half the game. The jumbotron is quite small, too, but I guess that goes with being a 500,000 pop MSA. The field appears to be field turf now. It used to be grass and a mess, drainage wise. It looked good and appeared to play very well.

Nice fireworks after the game and at other points.

Amazing parachuting in by Army Rangers. This was in the dark, about 7-8 of them at once. They had sparks coming off of themselves to light up their descent (I'd think that's pretty dangerous!) and coming in such quick succession, that struck me as risky too. One guy looked like he lost control as he came in at a very sharp angle, swinging wildly. Turns out he had a helmet cam, so maybe it was for show. He landed fine.

The refs did make mistakes - but to me, a neutral observer - against both teams. Far too many plays seemed to go to video review, and the reviews took way too long. The first half took 1:40 to play.

ASU cheerleaders handed out santa hats with bells on the pom pom, and on them written "I was there 12-14-2007" and "ASU" on the other side. They also of course produced student newspapers with big headline "DYNASTY" with about 5 min to go.

Tickets were only $15. For a freakin' national championship football game! How about that! Parking near the stadium cost 2x as much. [we only paid $5 though].

It was quite an experience, but overall, I wish it had been a better game. It was 14-0 after 1 and I think 28-7 at half. It was really never competitive. OTOH, if it was a nailbiter, I can't imagine how embittered the ASU fans would have been after every call (or non-call). My 8 year old got an earful of their endless obscenities and I guess that's the risk you take going to a sporting event these days. But these guys were winning by so much, they were going for 3 straight NCs, and they were so desperate and blind. Pathetic and classless. It was a negative lesson in good sportsmanship.

couple other shout outs from the crowd:

when a Delaware player (left guard I think) went down, a guy behind me mocked him, saying "poor guy hurt his pinkie." Turns out he broke his ankle.

Other fella shouted about the butt-whipping ASU was laying on them, that (at the time) UD didn't really deserve the 7 pts they got (touchdown had been reviewed, and he didn't like the call of course). But he was fine with a TD taken away from UD on a review earlier in the game (around the time that guy broke his ankle).

Just startling. My son said he'd probably rather watch it on TV next time.

You may rightly see me as someone who, having just hit 40, is getting too far removed from his college days to remember the great emotional frenzy that we use to whip ourselves up into. That may be. But there may be a lesson here. When you have many NCs already, and are a dominant team (as Duke hoops have been), you can easily get on the public's bad side by acting whiny and arrogant, esp. when you're already killing a team. I wonder if others perceive Duke fans that way.

I know that I once turned off some family/friends when I felt Duke was jobbed by officiating in the '99 final. Now, I don't think I'm one to think that is the case all the time or even very much. I didn't think we were jobbed in '86, '04, and certainly not in '90! But in '99 I really felt we were. Perhaps even then you have to act classy. You are perceived as a school that, in that sport, suffers from an embarrassment of riches, so there's little to be gained by getting publicly ugly about it. Then again, we lost that game. ASU crushed in this game and it still wasn't enough for them. They wanted a shutout, they wanted blood, and it was unseemly.

You now know why we (at Western Carolina U.) always called them "Boone Goons".

The ESPN announcers were bashing the ASU fans really hard there at the end, calling them "classless", too. The crowd control was non-existent. The way the fans were crowding the field for the last few minutes was really dangerous on so many levels. They better get that fixed before next year.

There were a couple interesting stories the announcers told of ASU players during the broadcast. One was about how the wide-receiver, Dexter Jackson, the one who made the SI cover after the Michigan win, won the So Con 200-meter track title. One day last Spring, the track coach challenged the footballers to put up 4 of their own to take on his 4x100 relay team. Jackson ran the second leg for the football players and blew away his counterpart. The track coach got him on the track team real quick like & 2 weeks later he won the 200 (& finished 2nd to a WCU Cat in the 100) at the So Con meet, his second ever meet. Not bad. ... Another neat story was about the kid, Piere Banks, from Durham, who is the second youngest of 17 kids. I especially liked the part about one of his older brothers (4 of whom played college football) who played at Western Carolina. He would come to the games to support his kid brother, but he refused to sit on the Appy St side. Good decision, especially considering the typical ASU fan behavior.

Still, I gotta give their team props for winning three in a row. Congrats! (Agree on the fan behavior, it should be better)

BuschDevil, thanks for the reply. Interesting about ESPN, since obviously I didn't get to see their coverage (and not so obviously, I didn't Tivo it or DVR-it). Glad to know I wasn't the only one a bit taken aback.

There are a lot of good stories about these unsung stars. It kind of renews your faith in scouting/recruiting when you see these kids that no one wanted doing so well. I'm sure teaching is a huge part of that, plus the drive of the student to do their best and be teachable. If no one else wanted them, chances are they weren't surrounded by "yes men" in high school who let them develop a 'tude and bad habits. And I do separate the ASU guys from their fans. The team was not classless. (they were average in that dept as best I could see).

Hey, isn't WCU the alma mater of Paul Johnson? You guys can be proud of him, though now we blue devils have to go against him.

    3-peat!

LOL. Okay, so we have a Moc and a Purple kitty (language filter won't let me post the true nickname) giving us their insight on the game. Nice report. Hilarious.

I was at the game. I'll post later when I have had more rest. I will say that I was very embarrassed by the fans who rushed the field. Most of the people in our box are alumni and we were livid.

Now I'm going to go scratch my beard and fall asleep. I’ll try to post pictures, video clips and my report. It was a great event and a great time. I've never had a better sporting experience and it was mainly thanks to a box owner.

I have had the privilege of attending 5 National championship basketball games (1978,1990,1992,1999,2001) to watch my beloved Devils compete. As a 20 year old in the pep band I am sure my language was a bit profane in 1978 (how could it not be when signing from the DUMB hymnal?). As a 43 year old in 2001, I don't recall yelling any obscenities, though I was quite vocal and passionate...no different than my 1978 experience.

I attended the Chattanooga event to watch ASU play with my son and his fiancée who are seniors at App State. (BTW cpsan37421, he and many of the guys grow beards in the winter, as I did as a Duke student years ago….so what? And the point of your reference to the tobacco chewing girls? Please!)

I can tell you the passion in that stadium was no different than that which I witnessed with Duke hoops or the SEC football games I have attended. I seemed to have had a different crowd experience than some of you however. The occasional profanity was unwelcome, but no surprise…I recall hearing them at a few Duke basketball games. Let’s just say I learned no new words. If last night offended you, I recommend not attending an SEC football game… though I suspect it matters who you sit next to. Perhaps the casual observer would view a Duke hoops crowd as you viewed the ASU crowd?

The crowd on the field was a simple matter of no attempt by the stadium personnel to inhibit it. None at all. And as far as I could tell (I waited for the game to end to gently drop over the wall onto the field) there was nothing but positive enthusiasm and jubilation on the field…not a hint of hooliganism. Don’t even try to paint a picture otherwise.

I can only hope that Duke football can generate half of the passion and pride I have felt watching ASU football for 4 years. I have sat in the student section for many home games in Boone and I would gladly suffer the same occasional profanity and irrational (possibly drunken?) student behavior at Duke for the same support.

About the girls: It was a joke! Nothing more. About the guys: seriously, more than a few of their fans looked like Cooter on a bad day. And no, I didn't realize beards were making such a comeback. Really.

I failed to mention that a fight nearly broke out right near us. Some fan - not sure if ASU or UD, had security remove a guy for some reason. My guess is that he didn't have a ticket for that section and he was being obnoxious. But strangely the guy came back twice later to accost the guy who got him booted - got in his face like a drill sergeant. Luckily the guy on whom he was releasing his venom just took it and let him vent.

And where do you get off telling me "don't even try to paint a picture otherwise"? I was there and I don't make up stuff. Since turnabout is fair play, here's my suggestion for you: don't you even try to suggest you knew what was going on where I was sitting.

PS to Chard: I'm not a Moc. I'm a Dukie, '89. I just live in Chattanooga.

He's right about the beards up there. What do you expect from the High Country? There are bunches of hippies up there and it is cold! So we rock the facial hair? So what! Yosef is a true picture of what you'll find up there. It is hard country and was pioneered by hard folk. But not everyone is like that.

I thought the game was closer than the score seemed to indicate. Remember, that UD "lost" 17 points. They had third and goal on the 1 and should've scored. They "lost" 3 points on a field goal from a kicker who has been spectacular this year. And the drop at the end of the first half was pure lack of focus.

That being said, ASU has had problems on run defense, special teams, and turn-overs all year. None of those issues were present on Friday and really helped them seal the game. And it seemed that all of Flacco's passes across the middle were either behind the receiver or too high. Maybe the passes needed to be there to prevent interceptions but from our vantage point the passes looked poorly thrown.

As far as the fans were concerned it's all a matter of who is near you. The ASU fans near me were fun.

And one nit-pick, the seated tickets were $20 each. Congrats if you got them for close to face value.

Hey, Chard. Congrats on the 3-peat! Feel free to PM me that nickname the filters won't let through, I have never actually heard what you guys called us.

For what it is worth, my only problem with the fans was the crowding of the field... that was just dangerous, for the fans & the players, if players went flying out of bounds. Common sense would say stay back from the field a little, but beyond that, even that issue was not all on the fans... the stadium officials should have done more. If they were not (or could not) keep people from jumping down to field level before the game ended, the least they could do is direct everybody to stay back from the field a little. Since I was not there, I could not comment on general fan behavior. I suppose, like anywhere, it would depend on who is near you in the stands.

Some questions for ya'... What will App St's team look like next year? Are many key players coming back? Any chance at a 4-peat? What big-time football power will they try to beat next year?

    Again, congrats on the Championship.

Hello to all. I am not new to the board as I read quite frequently, but never post. I am a current law student at Carolina (who was raised and still is a Duke fan) but by undergrad is from Appalachian. Because of the tone of the recent posts, I feel as if I must post to defend my beloved black and gold.

First of all, the "You Deeeee!" fans were as "classless and pathetic," if not more, than the black and gold nation. I took my mother to the game with me. On the way to the stadium a Delaware fan got into my mom's face and literally screamed at her. She was understandably mortified. I can't count with both my fingers and toes the amount of times the Delaware fans pointed at me and asked me to go "f--- my sister." I saw at least 5 UD fans escorted out of the stadium by police.

I am shocked at the negative tone Cspan has taken towards Appalachian. If it wasn't for ASU, the game probably wouldn't even still be in Chattanooga. Remember your city's fiasco in 2004 with the natural grass? The NCAA gave you one year to clean it up and attract more fans. In 2005 the game was close to a sell-out and Chattanooga came out smelling like a rose. That game featured ASU and Northern Iowa. As one who was in attendance in 2005, I can assure you that UNI fans did not make that a near-sellout, it was the folks in black and gold. Your posts kind of sound like...well...I hate to say it, but Dean Smith. The 'class police.' Kind of like when Dean asked students not to wave behind the backboard during free-throws because it's not 'classy.' C'mon, man.

Atldukie, thanks for the kind words. You can imagine the pride that I feel when the Apps win a NC or beat Michigan, and I'm sure that your son feels the same way. Many of my friends came into ASU wearing the colors of an ACC school, but graduated with only room for black and gold in their hearts. I still carry an Appalachian bag to class at UNC, and would never trade it for any other university.

Buschdevil, the Apps will be OK next year. We are losing Corey Lynch (who blocked the field goal at Michigan) and Kevin Richardson (all time leading rusher in school history) along with many others. We still have Armanti and others have stepped up this year. I would be surprised if we aren't in the SoCon title race, if not the national title race again. We aren't playing a big time school until 2009, when we travel to Florida for a tilt with the Gators. UGa in 2010 and VT in 2011. Good luck to the Cats in finding a coach.

First, let me say that I am sorry to hear that you encountered even worse from UD fans. Lots of folks were drunk, but that's no excuse: what you heard is on par with what JJ Redick had to put up with his senior year, and that was despicable. I was on the predominantly ASU side of the field, though estimates I heard were that 70% of fans were ASU [I don't know how they determined that, for I did not sign up as either], which explains how they got the App - State back and forth cheer going. I didn't realize until then that some ASU fans were on the side that had the UD band.

Second, the tone I took is merely a reflection of what I experienced with my 3rd grade son. He got an earful of R-rated language, bad attitudes involving blaming the refs for everything and never admitting your team ever does anything wrong, etc. The way I look at it, the ASU fans around me created the negative tone, and I am just letting folks here know about it. I will concede not all ASU fans around me were horrible - an older couple directly in front of us were positive throughout and sweet to each other. But many within earshot were nasty.

Third - you probably should know that I have nothing whatever to do with how well Chattanooga has put on the show, either now or in the past. The fact that I live here has nothing more to do with it than EarlJam does for Shelden's carjacking. I didn't go to the mud game but did hear about it. Hey, it happens, even this year in an NFL game in Pittsburgh. It usually takes a crisis/fiasco like that to get a change made, and they did it. We lucked out with excellent football weather - in between two storms (both of which brought much needed rain).

Without a doubt, ASU plays excellent football, and their fans are justifiably proud of their team ["It's great ... to be .. a mountaineer!" - a positive cheer I heard once the game nearly over]. I simply was noting that love (of a team) can lead to a complete inability to see one's team or fans ever in the wrong, whether it be penalties or obnoxious behavior. I then wondered if such a phenomenon might be behind the widespread hatred for Duke, for we have had similar success, and opposing fans seem to take away reactions similar to the ones I had at this game. That's all, and thanks.

Two things. First, the lack of class by UD students does not excuse the acts by the ASU students. I don't know if the kind of behavior I saw is normal, but regardless of who does it, poor behavior can't be excused simply because the other team's fans are also acting like jackasses. Second, comparing fan support between ASU and UNI in Chattanooga would be like comparing Duke and Kentucky fan support in Lexington. UNI is very, very far away from Chattanooga. I would estimate close 24 hours drive (based on my driving between Durham and eastern IA). ASU is only 4 to 5 hours away. I talked to quite a few ASU students who were heading back that night.

DOWN WITH APP - LOL , check out my handle... they are starting to get a little loose with the class of the fans...charging the sideline with ~4 minutes left in the game is inexcusable - that is looking for someone to get hurt. I have never seen that in an NCAA football game before in my life

I'll take your word for it that it was unusual for the students to rush the sideline that quickly. But, I think the responsibility for that lies with stadium security. After all, the stadium was able to protect the goal posts without any problems.

But, I do have to give the ASU fans props for waiting until a few of the football players rushed the field before beginning their mad crush. And they seemed relatively civil about not crowding the UD bench area.

Okay, as promised here is my report. I just have to relate this story to you because I still can't believe it.

I along with my friend and fellow alumnus were trying to get tickets all week to the championship game. Tickets were sold out by Saturday morning and the tickets that were available from Finley Stadium were sold out as well. If you managed to buy before 11-15 you paid $15 at the FS box office. If you were an ASU season ticket holder, student or Yosef club member and were in line right after the semifinal, you got to buy the tickets for $20. The only place to get tickets was from others. Our search began with eBay where tickets were going for around $130 - $200 a pop. We found a box with 12 seats for around $700 but that was early in the bidding. It sold for around $1,800 on Tuesday. We couldn't compete with that. Various other auctions were being held and we either didn't win the bidding or just didn't want to bid due to the already high price. We were resigned to the fact that we would just have to sit at home, eat some wings and watch on TV.

Thursday night a box owner at Finley Stadium decided to put his box on eBay since his family decided to not attend the game. The opening price was around $500 for 12 tickets on the 50 yard line and two parking passes right in front of the stadium. Yeah, we couldn't believe it either. The auction would end at 11 am on Friday morning. We decided to wait until near the end of the auction to see what the price would be bid up to. Around 10 am, the bids got up to around $850. That was still a bargain compared to the other auctions. With about 10 minutes to go we got our plan in order and began bidding with about 2 minutes to go in order to find the high bid of the current leader. With about 30 seconds to go we entered our maximum bid and won the box seats for around $900. Woo-Hoo! What unbelievable luck. We ended up paying half of what others had paid via eBay, we had parking passes right in front of the stadium and we had box seats right on the 50! Are you kidding me?! Thank you eBay!

We get there and the seats are amazing!

I watched the Army paratroopers land on the 50 yard line and right after that there is an earth shattering BOOM from an F-15 that flew over our heads. How did I know what type of jet it was? I saw it practicing the dive while I was driving to Chattanooga, that's how!

There was a large contingent of ASU fans on every side of the stadium. Delaware only sold 3,000 tickets through their season ticket holders. I don't think our neighbors were ASU or Delaware alumni since we were the only ones cheering during the game for the most part. All the fans below us kept looking back up at us like we were celebrities or something. Too cool. The game was a blow out. ASU did exactly what they were good at this year. They made it a track meet and Delaware couldn't keep up.

I wasn't in the stands so I couldn't tell you how people acted. We had two former Delaware players invade our box but they turned out to be nice guys. We talked serious football and they were congratulatory about our success on the field. There are always A-holes from any fan base so that is to be expected. If you bring your children to a football game they are going to hear some dirty language. You'll find that at any sporting event. Some folks are just uncouth in their actions. However, don't just lump an entire fan base into "classlessness" just because you sat by A-holes. Cspan, sorry you had to go through that but your post did tend to characterize our entire fan base. This was for a championship so anyone arguing with every call the refs made shouldn't have been a shock. Those people may have had no clue about what they were talking about but it doesn't make them classless. I think many of us knew that Delaware was a good team and that we could not take our foot off of the pedal until the clock ran down to zeroes. You did notice that nobody stopped cheering during Delaware possessions even when the game was in hand, right? That is a good fan base!

When the fans began surrounding the field we were very disappointed. I could tell that many of the fans actions were being fueled by alcohol. With over three minutes to go this was unacceptable. The security did a good job of not only just keeping them off the field to not becoming over zealous in their attempts to keep order. That would have set off something ugly. Other than the Delaware player flinging the football after the run back of a kick off and hitting a police officer, nothing occurred. The officer was none too happy.

After that, it was time to celebrate a third consecutive championship!

The pics are poor quality since they are captured from a video camera. Just wanted to share.

Some questions for ya'... What will App St's team look like next year? Are many key players coming back? Any chance at a 4-peat? What big-time football power will they try to beat next year?

    Again, congrats on the Championship.
Substitute kitty with another word for a cat. It starts with a P. WCU is also known as UCLA. University of Cullowhee left of Asheville. Yuck, yuck.

ASU returns a lot of experienced players. We lose most of our O line which in my opinion is as responsible for our recent success as any individual player. Our secondary graduates most of the starters but we have depth that has been developed. One of our starters was left in Boone due to disciplinary reasons and you didn't see much of a fall off on Friday, did you?

A fourth consecutive title you ask? I don't know yet. We'll see in the next few months how things pan out. The schedule isn't out yet so we don't know who will step up and play us yet. We have Armanti Edwards back so that is a huge factor. He is amazing. Our O line and D line had several injuries this year so the sophomores and freshmen got to play. Devon Moore has experience and will be a fine running back. The key players of this three year run are gone but we did lose a lot from the 05 team and didn't miss a beat. We look good but I'll hold off on making a prediction just yet. I'm just going to enjoy this season for a great long while!

I knew about the UCLA line, heck, we called ourselves that way back when during my days in Cullowhee... Cullowhat... Cullowhere? (The PP line I had definately not heard before, thankfully it turns out.)

I was at WCU in the early-mid 80's. We made the NC game my freshman year & I went to all the playoff games, including the title game, in '82 (played at The Citadel's stadium... yuck). We played great that year, we even put a scare into GT, leading them in the 4th Qtr. at their homecoming, but unfortunately, the Cats got creamed by So. Ill. in the title game. Still, it was nice to make it to the championship game, but I really would have loved to have won it. We had several future NFL players on that team, including DE Clyde Simmons (played 15 seasons & ended his career in 2000 at 11th all-time in sacks) & PK Dean Biasucci (played 11 seasons & was the Colts all-time scoring leader when he left in '96). That was our best team & we just have never gotten back to that level since coach Bob Waters passed away (from ALS in the mid 80's).

I sure hope that some of ASU's players get a shot at the NFL. Lynch maybe? Who else? Thanks for the first hand report. Hopefully, someday I'll get another chance to watch WCU in a title game (& win it!... that is of course, if you yokels would be kind enough to let go of it for a while).
