Sure these kids are young, but that's never the way I've made my life's biggest decisions. We could give some of these folks (starting with players who gave four years to Duke) the benefit of the doubt.
Even if getting paid more was the only reason, who cares? Everybody deserves the right to look for their best interests.

I don’t think Roach would even get drafted. He would have to take the Seth Curry G-league route, and I personally think Curry was the better player at Duke.

Thus, no one would have to wait. Keels was a real question mark because it was his first year. We know who Roach is at this point - a gutsy, physically limited guard who gave a great 4 years.

I fast forwarded through much of the covid year, but based on what I did watch I was unimpressed with Roach. He seemed a little too short, a little too slow. Hard worker, good kid, but just limited.

As a sophomore he had some of the same limitations, but more and more he became a guy we could trust with the ball in his hand. The NCAAT run was excellent but it wasn’t out of left field - he was improving steadily all year.

I was a little surprised he returned as a junior tbh, with most of the rest of the ‘22 team moving on. It was a pleasant surprise to discover he’d made a leap. The shooting from distance in particular was more reliable. He’d never be a great defender but he’d used his time in the system wisely, and knew exactly where to be at all times.

By the time he was a senior he was just an all-around excellent college basketball player. An exemplary representative of our team and our school. Did just about everything well on and off the court. Not a superstar, probably not a big pro prospect, but an outstanding college player.

Nothing but best wishes for this dude - we’ve watched him grow up before our eyes. We’re not in the ‘22 FF without him. He’s done everything anyone asked of him, and did it well. It’ll sting to see him in a different uniform next year but only for a bit. Hope he has a great 5th year and success in whatever he does after that.

[Unless he goes to UNC, in which case an eternal pox on him, but I think that goes without saying.]

I think the vast majority of people on this board and Duke fans in general are very appreciative for Jeremy's 4 years and wish him all the best for his future. I'd hope that for those that don't understand why he's not coming back, you'd at least respect Jeremy's right to make the best decision for himself in his fifth year of college ball after giving Duke four great years.

Yep. Curry was a little bigger and shot the 3 better. Roach isn't getting drafted but I think he's making the right decision. He has worked his whole life for this so why not see if 1 team likes you. I think the G-League pays 60K? a year.

We don't know the behind the scenes negotiations. Maybe his transfer was needed to keep Proctor and/or Foster not the other way around. Scheyer may have wanted to keep the guys with more eligibility.

  7. #127
Just b/c the announcement was made after Proctor and Foster announced they were returning it doesn't mean the decisions were made in that order.

He has always seemed fairly limited in that regard to me, which hasn't been ideal considering his size, workload, etc. Here are his assist number from freshman to senior season.

    Assist %: 16.9, 16.9, 18.7, 18.0
    Assists/100 poss.: 5.8, 6.3, 5.7, 5.9
    Assists/40 min: 4.0, 4.3, 3.7, 4.0
If you want to quibble about the word "drammatically", I won't dispute the point. But he HAS improved. I would also point out that the other half of facilitation is not turning the ball over, and would add these stats to those considered above:

    TOV%: 19.8, 16.2, 14.6, 10.6
    TO/100 poss.: 4.1, 3.2, 4.1, 2.6
    TO/40 min.: 2.9, 21.2, 2.7, 1.7
    A:TO/100 poss.: 1.41, 1.97, 1.39, 2.27
    A:TO/40 min.: 1.38, 1.95, 1.37, 2.35

His overall decision making is better. To my mind, noticeably better, as in, I actually notice a difference in Jeremy's decision-making now, compared to what it was as a freshman.

In terms of single-number advanced stats, Jeremy was the best guard we had on the floor last year. So bringing this back around full circle, I think it is difficult to make a credible case that Jeremy's departure is a good thing for Duke. But who knows for sure? Maybe the coaches are interested in replacing him, and maybe they get super lucky (show great skill?) in the portal. There are few certainties at this time of year.

I really didn't anticipate how hard it was to sum up on thoughts on Jerm. But here they are.

4 years is a long time. Our whole world has changed in 4 years. Jeremy was consistently there at PG for Duke those 4 years. He led with absolute class in spite of a seemingly quiet personality. I am really upset he could play in another collegiate uniform, but that's where the game has gone. I have so much respect for the way cap handled K's final year and Jon's first. It is imperitive to be successful in any sport you have more people like Jeremy Roach on your roster. March Jerm was something else, I can't even imagine how special April Jerm could be with next year's team. Salute.

He’s going to have to show playmaking ability and that won’t happen if he’s another cog in the machine splitting reps with Proctor and Foster.

In addition, The coaches have made it clear next years team is based on Flagg and Khaman. Brendan Marks all but said the priority was on Proctor because he’s a playmaker.

Jeremy needs to be somewhere where he can be the focal point of the offense as a guard. It wasn’t going to be on next years team. This is a good move for both Roach and Duke.

And that’s assuming he doesn’t go forward with the nba
I don’t really have to do anything including “getting a grip.” Jeremy can worry about Jeremy and I can enjoy what I enjoy about teams I support and not enjoy what I don’t enjoy. I’ve already given up the NBA and NFL and college football is of little interest. I currently watch only Duke games and tournament games. I don’t even watch UNC games to pull for their opponents anymore. I don’t have to make a conscious decision to give up following a team or sport. It just happens naturally when it becomes apparent that maybe I’m more invested in the team than the players and/or the ownership. I’m sort of repelled by that realization.

    You can say that again!

Watching that clip, I forgot how doggone good that team was, particularly Paolo by that point in the season! They meshed so well at the right time... Something about the diversity of weapons on that team just really allowed Jem (and he is an absolute gem, so I'm discarding the 'r' in abbreviating his name) to thrive. I'll truly miss him—one of my favorite Duke players in recent history—and wish Jeremy well wherever he lands next season (be it back at Duke [crossing fingers and thinking happy thoughts], at another school, or in the pros)...

Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
    To rock my soul

Or, as Bob Hope would say—"Thanks for the memories"

Baylor the favorite and offering $1.5m according to Field of 68

Wow! Jeremy about to set an NIL $ record?

That's gonna be eye opening for guys like RJ Davis and Harrison Ingram who are uncommitted. Better find some more $$ Heels.

    If $1.5MM was the price…
    -Could Duke have matched?
-if we could pay it and not have it impact other possible moves, should we have paid it?
-As the market continues to evolve, does this mean every incoming freshman will want more $$$ lest they get lured away?

College basketball is becoming the second tier professional basketball league in USA it seems like. Too bad, it was the one sport I really enjoyed because it was not like NBA etc.

I will miss Roach - he was a fun guy to watch and see grow. Might be one of the few in the near future that we will see contribute every year. I wish him the best.

I don't think your second question would ever have happened. How can it not impact other possible moves. We see this all the time - the new guy gets a ton of money so the other guys want similar money based on their contribution.

And your 3rd question will be a resounding yes IMHO. Duke is lucky that our brand name and quality of the coach makes up for lesser NIL probably but it is now pay for play. This off season is really disgusting IMHO. What's the point of watching 5 new guys every year, even pro teams do not have that kind of turn over. Unless NCAA does something, in a few years most every team will have new starting 5's every season. It is alreayd happening with the graphic from Elite 8. If I want to watch pro athletes, I would just watch Euroleague, which is the best league at this point. NBA is NBA, I personally find it boring with little defense, lots of ego's and way too many games that do not seem to matter at all. Euroleague has tons of fundamentals, most of the teams have a core that stays multiple years, and very strong local support for the team.
