    Who Stays and Who Goes

Sorry if this is too soon, but last year we started this thread on 3/18.

    Definitely gone:
    Flip

25 to 50% likely to return:
    McCain
Mitchell (transfer out), but would not mind if he stayed.

    Toss-up:
    Roach
    Proctor
    Reeves (pure speculation)

    Likely to return:
    Foster
    Stewart
    Power
    Schutt
    Blakes

If one of the toss-ups leave then thatís 13 scholarships, I believe. Thatís also a pretty thin backcourt.

I'd put McCain at closer to 90%. And even that is I think pollyannaish.

Tonight didn't do him any favors, that's for sure.

I agree. He is gone. I suspect he has already left school to prepare for the draft.

He's actually been posting several TikToks in class with his classmates.

I can say with certainty that you are wrong about that.
Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

Good to hear. I was told some things in Dallas during the tournament. Glad to hear they are at least not accurate... yet.

This is a bit of an aside, but many people overestimate the expectations for those late lottery picks (which either Kyle or Jared could be). Only a handful in each draft class will ever make an All-Star Game. Maybe 10 will be regular NBA starters. When you get down to 15-20, you're looking at guys hoping to stick in the league as reserves. The 13th best player from the 2017 draft by win shares is Luke Kennard. 15th from 2016 by the same measure is Taurean Prince.

The point: if you're picking at spots 10-20 (or somewhere in that range), you're not projecting these guys as All-Stars and maybe not even as starters (though you're obviously hoping to get lucky). Seeing a guy in a reserve role can justify a late lottery pick in many cases. And of course, teams will roll the dice on someone with "potential" - i.e. low floor, high ceiling - but that's not the rationale for every pick.

In support of JE's statement, guess what guy who "has already left school" made the ACC All-Academic team?

Duke placed 8, most in the conference.

Proctor was in that group of players that had a decision to make. Would it be the Australian National Basketball League, G-League, or Portal? I think he made a great choice deciding to return. He needs to show he can run the point full time and should have plenty of lob threats and shooters on the wings to wrack up assists.

Here's how I see the current situation FWIW:

Definitely gone: Filipowski, McCain, Mitchell, Reeves, Young
    Maybe gone: Blakes, Schutt
    50/50: Roach
    Maybe returning: Foster, Power, Stewart
    Definitely returning: Proctor

I am pretty stoked if Foster, Power, Proctor, and Stewart all return. Roach would be an awesome addition to this group as he does things a little different from either Proctor or Foster. That would be a great group of guards for either small ball or having 2 out there with a bigger lineup. The team had 6 "starters" for a lot of the season between Foster, Proctor, Roach, McCain, Mitchell, and Filipowski. They might have 6 or even 7 next year if Roach returns.

I hope this really means what I think it does. It's hard to overstate the mortification that many of us felt when it came out that Banchero, Griffin, Keels, Moore, and Williams quit attending classes after the NBA draft. For a school that stakes its reputation on being an academic overachiever, this was hard to brush off. In retrospect, the combination of COVID and K's retirement may have created a one-time only situation--one can only hope. But this performance on the All-Academic ACC team iis a sign, I hope, that that aberration will not happen again. Great news!

    Definitely gone:
    McCain
    Flip

    Likely gone:
    Michell (transfer)
    Roach
    Blakes

    Likely back:
    Proctor
    Foster
    and everyone else

Anything less than the ďlikely backĒ and a portal miss at guard and we could be in for a bumpy ride for 24-25.

I'm not confident that if Proctor returns, Foster doesn't transfer.
