Per Verbal Commits, 464 players are already in the portal. Here are the ACC teams involved; I'm including the 3 newcomer schools just to show that they have roster openings.

    California: Devin Askew, ND Okafor
Louisville: Koron Davis, Kaleb Glenn, Curtis Williams
Miami: AJ Casey, Bensley Joseph, Michael Nwoko, Christian Watson
    NC State: LJ Thomas
    SMU: Jefferson Koulibaly
    Stanford: Kanaan Carlyle, Andrej Stojaković
    Syracuse: Quadir Copeland, Justin Taylor
Wake Forest: Jao Ituka, Damari Monsanto

This bonkers number is a reminder that we should not panic if (more likely when) our luck avoiding the transfers last season runs out. The reality of college sports now is that each summer every player is a free agent. Coach Scheyer has shown once that he is adept at "re-recruiting" his own players to stick around in Durham, and while I doubt he bats 1.000 again this year I'm confident we'll end up in good shape.

The latest podcast said more players than we know will be playing their last game wearing a Duke uniform during the tournament, so I suspect that you are right.

ESPN's first ranking of transfer portal players is up. I'm not surprised Dug McDaniel is atop the list for now... how many guys that averaged 16 points and ~5 assists in a Power 5 conference are out there? He's going to be a prime plug-and-play target for top teams that need a PG this offseason.

While I also suspect that I'm right, in part for those reasons, let's remember two things before getting too anxious:
    1) It's very possible that the fact that "more players than we know will be playing their last game wearing a Duke uniform" could mean that more guys than we expect are going to go pro (perhaps second round projected players).
    2) At this time last year we also were expecting massive roster turnover, both from NBA departures and transfers, and beyond the expected losses of Whitehead and Lively that didn't come to pass.

A lot of things can change between now and when players have to make these decisions. While I'm not expecting another near-perfect offseason from Coach Scheyer (as no one should!) I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that things will end up slightly better than we might be anxious about until proven otherwise.

If we end up looking for a big man, Brandon Garrison out of Oklahoma State is in the portal (6' 10", 245 lb, started 29 games, was a McDonalds AA). He would be a rising sophomore, so our policy on how credits transfer would not be a blocker to recruiting him.

A very reasonable target for Wake Forest.

I have to imagine a big would be the lowest on our priority list if we go digging in the portal, unless something unexpected happens with departures or Pat Ngongba isn't ready to play at all in Year 1 following his lost senior year to injury. The most likely scenario right now is a frontcourt rotation of Flagg, Stewart, Malauch, and Ngongba, which wouldn't leave many minutes for an established big.

That makes sense, but I would expect to hear the phrase "knocked back" a few times next year. My perception is that group doesn't have a lot of beef.

we should get our first health update concerning Ngongba about two years from now.

This is what is driving the legends of coaching out of college sports.Saban comes to mind ,I think K might have stayed another couple of years but college sports is the minor leagues now and I hate what has happened. There are no rules it seems I know K hates this to his core.I don't know how the coaches put up with re recruiting almost your whole team every year. Its took the love I used to have for the game away!Is it reasonable to say the sooner your season ends the more you can reshape your roster for next year?

Michigan big man Tarris Reed Jr. is also now in the portal. He was their only decent big guy. Wow is that cupboard bare. They really need to get a coach in there quickly or they're gonna be playing the student managers next year.

It is crazy how quickly the shine from Howard's start at Michigan faded, and in a fairly short stretch of time.

Certainly both big ifs, but if Mitchell stays, and Ngongba, at 6'11" 235 lbs, returns from injury, then a frontcourt of Ngongba, Flagg or Stewart, and Mitchell, while not "beefy" in the Edey sense, could likely bang with a physical opponent. And Maluach may be able to negate pure physicality with height, at 7'2" and reportedly still growing.

Agree. And the friendliest of amendments: Maluach. That name will be tough to get right, admittedly.

Reed is another guy I'd expect to get a lot of high-major attention. He was a Top 50 recruit and showed some real flashes as a defense and rebounding focused big. You can't teach his combo of size and athleticism.

And yeah, the Howard downfall was quite precipitous. It'll be very interesting to see who ends up in Ann Arbor this fall... there are not completely crazy rumors that Jon Beilein would be interested in returning if he was offered the job, but also rumblings that Michigan really wants FAU's Dusty May.

As an FYI: Reed is listed as 6' 10' and 265, led the Wolverines in rebounding and will have two years of eligibility remaining. Garrison (McDonald's AA), listed as 6"11 and 240 just completed his freshman year, so should have three years of eligibility remaining. Certainly many other factors go into the process for JS and staff but just wanted to share these data points.
