No surprise there. He wasn't able to crack the rotation at Harvard in two years.

He was on the roster at Harvard for two years, yes. He played a combined 13 minutes in 5 games across those two years.

If I recall, he was off the roster part way through this season. He was also halfway to a Harvard diploma - that is hard to give up. His future is going to be supported by the diploma, not basketball.

Yeah, it was weird. I went and couldn't find him on Harvard's roster.

    Let's go Duke!

He's giving up that Harvard degree to go start at a D2 school? OK. Or maybe he wants to join Dartmouth's union...

    The 2024 Transfer Portal

So it begins... unsurprisingly with some names from Michigan after Juwan Howard's firing.

The two portal entrants are Dug McDaniel and George Washington III. The latter was an ESPN100 freshman, but he barely saw the floor for a horrible Michigan team this year (which probably say something). The former is much more interesting... despite being (weirdly) suspended for the 6 road games due to reported academic issues, when he played McDaniel was one of the better players in the B1G this year. He was teammates with some current and former Blue Devils and Paul VI in high school and was himself a Top 100 recruit. His diminutive stature makes him a defensive liability, but in the right offense he could explode onto the scene next year. I'd expect most teams with an opening at PG to inquire about his status.

More to come I'm sure from Michigan guys portaling. One thing is for sure: whoever the new coach is there he's going to have plenty of PT to offer prospective incoming transfers, if they can get the credits issue resolved with their academic admissions folks.

When it comes to the possibility of signing a high-impact transfer, on a scale of 1-10 my expectations are at 0.

He already transferred once. But he's probably a grad transfer. Plus I have no idea what the transfer rule is these days after that court decision.

I say less than zero. I'd say a lights out shooter is what I'd look to add and maybe another PG type. We have enough bigs with what is coming in and likely staying. We don't have any proven shooters if McCain leaves.

Are we even going to have an open scholarship?

I suspect that we may wind up having one available. But at the moment, no we would not have one available. In fact, we will have to have a couple of additional exits as is. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if we wind up with more exits than necessary, such that we could add a transfer. Not suggesting any names in particular; just that it is really unusual to carry a full 13 recruited players these days.

Arkansas has two portal entrants of note: Keyon Menifeld and Joseph Pinion. Menifeld is a sophomore point guard who played at Washington his freshman year. He was originally going to redshirt because of academic qualification issues (he was still redshirting when the Hogs played Duke) but was granted a waiver in December. He got some playing time and was occasionally sensational but more often than not a non-entity (a good summary for this entire Razorback team's season). The assumption among some fans (including me) was that a starting backcourt job would be his to lose next year, but I guess not!

Pinion is more interesting from a Duke perspective. He was a top 100-ish recruit in the high school class of 2022. He got some interest from Duke and was in contact with coach Scheyer (when he was still an assistant) but was never offered, perhaps because Duke had already taken Jaden Schutt who was slightly higher rated and had an almost identical profile (6'5" guard, great shooter, bit of a long term project). Pinion played spot minutes in his two seasons in Fayetteville but never got consistent playing time and was never a great fit with Musselman's style. He seems like a transfer down candidate to me, but you never know.

The portal opening up before the tournament is bonkers. Wonder is any of these kids have immediate eligibility? Now that would be something.

He is already a 5th year senior with now 3 years at Wake, so yeah he is probably going to be a grad transfer.

    Football giggles.
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."
