Penn beat #1 ranked Maryland today - not sure why Penn can be more competitive than Duke

Get the defibrillator ready. It’s 12-6 after three. DeBellis with a three-goal quarter; she has five for the game.

15-10 is your final. Six-pack for DiBellis and eleven saves for Everson. Nease 15-for-26 on draws. Defense was superb.

Campbell up next, the final non-conference game, on Monday night. Camels are 3-8 and number 94 in the RPI (Duke is 35, but today’s win over RPI number three UVa should give them quite a bump).

Duke moves up to number 30 in the RPI.

Beating Campbell isn’t going to help things much, but there is a path to at least the bubble. Duke’s last three regular season games are against ND, Louisville, and UNC. They should beat Louisville. Steal one more regular season ACC win and win one game in the ACC tournament, and they will be at 12-7 and probably have an RPI in the mid-20s. That’s last in/first out territory.

Thanks! A couple of weeks ago, you commented on how the landscape of women's college lacrosse had changed and implied that we needed to adjust our expectations for Duke going forward. Can you elaborate on that? Appreciate it.

Duke celebrated its return to the top 25 (at number 23) by clobbering Campbell, 16-2. The Camels scored five minutes in to tie it at 1-1, and didn’t score again for almost 45 minutes. Four goals for Keller and a hat trick for DeBellis. Nease continued her hot streak on draws; Duke went 14-20 for the game. Pretty much every non-GK who dressed played.

The Duke women come from behind, after trailing at the half, to win at Louisville 14-11.

Eager to watch the replay to see what Louisville did defensively. They held DeSimone to one and one and bageled DeBellis, but the mids came through with 12 goals. Certainly didn’t hurt that Nease went 21-for-29 on draws.

Big win. Now the question is do we have what it takes to beat the weakest Cheats team in many years.

Louisville shut off both DeSimone and DeBellis, and it was effective against them, but at the cost of a lot of slides that were too late after Duke mids dodged effectively from up top. DeSimone took a number of big hits, including a collision on the ride late in the third that put her out for the rest of the game. Pronti, who took her spot, came up with a big assist on what turned out to be the winning goal.

Not Everson’s best game, but she had two big momentum-changing saves early in Q3.

Duke sits at number 20 in the USALacrosse poll and number 31 in the RPI. Virginia’s win over BC helps Duke in both RPI and SOS.

We really really need to beat the Cheats. Even though it probably wouldn’t be a second RPI top 20 win (because a loss to us would likely knock them out of the top 20), it would be a big statement and give us some momentum heading into the ACC tournament.

The last round of ACC regular season games Wednesday and Thursday will determine seeding and matchups. A win over the Cheats would give us, at a minimum, fifth place by virtue of the head-to-head tie-breaker. We could end up as high as tied for third if other results break a certain way, but one of the results that would have to break a certain way is VaTech beating UVa, which seems highly unlikely. We can finish no lower than sixth, as we go into the final round of games with a two-game lead over seventh-place Clemson.

We’re virtually certain to face either UVa or BC in the quarterfinals, with BC appearing more likely.
