    Duke Football 2024

With today's announced addition of Elon to our '24 schedule, we now know every team that Duke will be facing. By the end of this month, we'll likely know when the Spring Game is, and what the format is. (Elko changed it from how Cut ran it, hopefully Diaz will keep it as a scrimmage.)

This is a rough idea of who and when we'll be playing starting in August.

    Sat Aug 31, Elon
    Sat Sep 7, at Northwestern
    Sat Sep 14, UCONN
Sat Sep 21, at Middle Tennessee State
    TBA, Florida State
    TBA, Mack and the Cheaters
    TBA, SMU
    TBA, Virginia Tech
    TBA, at Georgia Tech
    TBA, at Miami
    TBA, at NC State
    TBA, at Wake Forest

That's a really good schedule with a solid mix of winnable games, toss ups, and at least one gonna take a miracle.

I'm excited to see what the year brings, and am excited to see what Diaz and company do in the portal as Spring and summer practices approach.
FYI, the past two years the Spring Game has been in the middle of April, and I'm crossing fingers it stays that way. Cutcliffe used to have it in March which I hated.
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."

Finishing with four road games seems ó odd.

Well we don't know that. It's not likely. Every game after September is TBA, so we don't when they'll be on our schedule.
I do love that September is once again home-away-home-away like it was in '22.

I'd prefer Thursday or Friday evening to a Saturday afternoon game in September.

I personally like a Thursday or Friday home game. I like when all eyes are on us! Shows
how much we've improved from the days before Coach Cut. I also think if we play good in
the game it's a good recruiting tool to use for HS and Portal people. It opens there eyes
to what's possible by playing for/at Duke.

I would expect 1-2 non-Saturday games in Wally Wade.

I feel confident Elon will be no TV so it will be up to Duke whether the game is Saturday night or a weeknight before Labor Day. UConn has enough overall college brand name (not the on-field product) to move that to Friday night on ACCN. I'm expecting Duke to take a step back on the night game front next year.

Thursday night=terrible crowd which is terrible for a recruit to see.

Reports show Elon is either Friday or Saturday 8/30-31.

The last couple years the ACC has announced the dates for conference games at the end of January.

Does anybody know if Northwestern will start their stadium rebuild this season, and if we'll be playing in another venue?

(I couldn't find anything online in a quick search.)

As of 11/21/23, "Northwestern will announce next steps and a timeline at a later date."
So I am guessing they won't start until after the 2024 season ends, at the earliest.

Thanks. I saw that, but thought I was missing the "later date" announcement.

They said in late November a timeline would be announced at a later date. Interesting that they may play games at Wrigley field while the construction (whenever that is) takes place.
Sounds like a good project, the locals are happy, decreasing the size makes for fewer Wolverines, Hawkeyes, Hoosiers and their ilk sullying the premises. My only chuckle is the assertion that the stadium
will be a big economic boost to the area. This promise has been made at countless pro stadiums with little or no evidence to back it up. But at least they aren't (directly) taking taxpayer money, so that's fine. The Cats will play 6-7 games at the new field, they can have six concerts as well, just not sure how much of a boost that will provide.

Uh, I would suggest that the the bolded statement is not entirely true. Since the Evanston city council approved (barely) the stadium renovation and plan (only after Northwestern promised additional $$$$ to Evanston) there have been lawsuits and threats of lawsuits and more, all in various attempts to stop the project. The problem isn't the renovation of the stadium per se, but Northwestern's desire to be able to use the stadium for concerts and other events beyond football. Which will help bring revenue to NU (and pay for the stadium) but will also bring additional noise, traffic and all kinds of imagined mayhem to the (wealthy!) neighborhoods around the stadium. There are many Evanstonians who hate this, and feel like Northwestern is being a bully.

Sorry for the local Evanston politics derail... In sum, I haven't seen anything definitive yet about where Northwestern will play next year.

While the exact timetable is still very much TBD, the expectation is that they will have to play the full 2024 and 2025 seasons at an alternative venue. Wrigley is probably the first choice, given recent history (theyíve hosted multiple games there over the last decade+, including Iowa this past November) and accessibility from campus and the northern suburbs. But I suspect the Cubs will balk at allowing CFB games there in September for sure and likely October, given expectations of playoff contention. So I wouldnít expect to see Duke playing at Wrigley next year, though I would love it personally.

The other two primary options would seem to be Soldier Field on the lakefront downtown and Seat Geek Stadium, home of the Chicago Fire MLS team, in near southwest suburb Bridgeview. The former has cache as well as favorable team and media facilities, but would be expensive to rent and a pain to get to for students and most fans. It is would also look pretty empty on most Saturdays, given 60k seats on 4 levels. Seat Geek is a better size at 28k and would be a lot cheaper to rent, but is also hard to get to and has fewer amenities (though the concessions at Soldier Field are generally terrible). Either of these would be pretty easy trips for Duke fans staying in downtown Chicago though.

yeah, that's true, I went too far, but I think they've managed the dissent down to a manageable level, by college town standards...six events per year just aren't that many. If you can find a college town in which everyone is happy, I'd like to see it...
I've gone to a bunch of games there, and while I understand that the well to do folks in the area don't love them, the scene is ultra mild by modern football standards.

My biggest excitement is the chance to see Duke play at State for the first time in forever.

The last time I saw Duke play at State live, Steve Spurrier was the coach and we got screwed out of the game by the refs. Was that the impetus for Spurrier being banned from the sidelines against UNC?

I don't remember exactly what happened, but we were driving for a winning TD.
Man, if your Mom made you wear that color when you were a baby, and you're still wearing it, it's time to grow up!
