    Duke Baseball 2024

First some roster news. Alex Stone will return for his senior season as catcher. He batted.315 with 17 homers last season. Charlie Beilenson, who was a high leverage middle innings relief pitcher last season, will return. Josh Allen, who saw lots of action on the mound in 2022, will return after not pitching last season due to injury.

Lots of transfer news. In the old baseball thread the following have already been mentioned:

    Jackson Emus, RHP from Princeton
Ben Miller, first baseman from Penn
    Logan Bravo, infielder from Harvard
    Wallace Clark, infielder from Oklahoma
    Ben Weaver, outfielder from Wheaton

The following are new mentions of incoming transfers:

Harrison Rodgers - infielder from D2 Colorado Mesa. He batted.356 with 15 homers, 65 RBI, and 21 SB in 57 games in 2023

John Gassler - LHP from D2 NYU. He pitched 57 innings with 93 K’s and 29 BB and a 2.28 ERA

Jimmy Evans - outfielder from D3 Tufts. He batted.324 with 4 homers, 42 RBI, and 7 SB in 42 games last season

Pete Gallo- RHP from St.Joe’s (Pa). He pitched 21 innings with 33 K’s and 32 BB and an 8.72 ERA

Wyatt Thompson- RHP from D3 Chapman. Had a 3.07 ERA in 76 innings with 81 K’s and 37 BB

Zac Morris - 2b, SS, OF from VMI. He batted.317 with 10 homers, 49 RBI, and 25 SB in 55 games in 2023

Tim Noone - LHP from D3 Babson. He posted a 2.13 ERA in 72 innings while striking out 73 and walking 10 last season

Duke is taking an arm from the A10 (one of the 6 or 7 worst D1 baseball conferences in the country) that pitched 21 innings with 33 K’s and 32 BBs and an 8.72 ERA last season? Am I missing something with this one?

No idea, but 33 Ks in 21 innings suggests he throws really hard.

Yea, that is a puzzler, particularly 32 walks in 21 innings. With those numbers I can’t imagine he would be used much.

On paper, 2024 should be among the strongest pitching staffs we have seen at Duke. Fran Oschell, James Tallon, Jonathan Santucci, Andrew Healy, Owen Proksch, Charlie Beilenson, and Aiden Weaver should all be quality arms. Add to them a couple of these grad transfers and one or two freshmen arms, along with guys like Edward Hart and Josh Allen and it has the potential for a great staff.

Odd thing to focus on. Google is your friend. Looks like he finished his four years there. He probably got into Duke for an academic grad program and is joining the team as an extra arm and a glorified walk-on, like the guy from Stanford Begovich joining the men's basketball team.

If this is our biggest problem, we are having a really good day. In Pollard we Trust.

Amazing to think how much scouting it took to acquire these guys...someone in the baseball office was busy.

Keep an eye out for Joey Loperfido. He was recently promoted to the Astros triple A affiliate, Sugarland. Across 3 levels this season Loperfido is batting.294 with 21 homers, 65 RBI, and 24 stolen bases.

Duke will host UNC-Wilmington on October 21 as part of their fall schedule. The full fall schedule should be out soon.

A couple of former Duke players have been selected MILB player of the year for their respective teams.

Joey Loperfido was selected by the Astros. He batted .282 with 25 homers, 75 RBI, and 25 stolen bases across A+, AA, and AAA.

Graham Pauley was selected by the Padres. He batted.308 with 23 homers, 94 RBI, and 22 stolen bases across A, A+, and AA.

Good move with FB playing State in Durham the next day.
Q "Why do you like Duke, you didn't even go there." A "Because my art school didn't have a basketball team."

Maybe State can put up a billboard in Durham again that says "This is Our State" before they come to town. It worked really well last time (2013) for Devon Edwards.

The full schedule usually comes out in a couple weeks. All we know at this point is Duke opens @Coastal in February. I'm leaning toward Duke making the trip to Doak with the preseason NCSU game in Durham. We're overdue for it, and it's one of our longest droughts in terms of series wins (2004?).

I realize he was a Duke commit-who-never-played rather than an alum of any kind, but Evan Carter is having an absolutely amazing impact for the Rangers. First, here is one of the Dallas paper’s “5 Thoughts” on yesterday’s ALDS win:

“Evan almighty: Evan Carter’s first postseason is beginning to reach the realm of the indescribable. Moved up to the No. 5 spot, he reached base in each of his first three plate appearances on Saturday, a pair of walks sandwiched around a ringing double on a Kyle Bradish slider. He reached in 10 of his first 11 postseason plate appearances. At this point, it’s kind of a surprise when he makes an out. He did, however, ground out to first baseman Ryan Mountcastle in the seventh.”

Second, here’s a longer article on Evan specifically. Link (possible paywall): https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/ra...e-magnificent/

It looks like the schedule is out, and there are no games at the DBAP. That seems like a mistake to me...I would have thought that playing in a AAA ballpark was a draw to potential recruits. Does anybody know why the full home schedule is on-campus this season?

Thanks. My guess is that it's too early to schedule the DBAP games rather than Duke ending the DBAP contract. Both are possible.

More home games v. Rider. Just what we always wanted. Otherwise, the schedule is pretty similar to last year. No ND, Louisville, or BC. No trip to Campbell.

The Durham Bulls schedule is out. Even the Savannah Bananas games are booked. It can't be too early for the DBAP schedule...

I did a Google search, and it looks like there was a 7-year deal (renewal of a previous deal) starting with 2016. I'm guessing that the Covid year added 2023 to replace 2020. The game this Friday is at the DBAP, but it might be the last one for a while.

Seems odd. DBAP really has functioned as a 2nd home facility for the team, as they have their own locker room, offices, etc. there. And it has to be a recruiting tool (my son went to a Duke camp and they made a point of touring DBAP as part of the experience).

What we know from the Bulls:
No ACCT in Durham this year.
After 4/1, only the weekend UNC series and 2 weekday games could be played there.
Open first week of NCAAT but not for Supers. (Yes, we can dream a little.)

Duke made a typical DBAP split schedule. Heavy Feb-Mar DBAP and Coombs after 4/1. Your guess as to the renewal is as good as mine.

FYI, Coombs doesn't look like it's been upgraded over the summer.
