The Brotherhood Podcast (hosted by Ryan Young)!

For those who may have missed it, there's a new podcast from the Duke social media team called "The Brotherhood Podcast". The first episode is out today, and it's Ryan Young interviewing Flip. It sounds like Ryan is going to be the "host" as he mentioned he was working with the social media team on this endeavor (man is he going to be successful in whatever he decides to do after he gets that Duke MBA!).

I'm listening now... post your thoughts/reactions here!

Oh my goodness... Kyle Filipowski and Ryan Young talking about coding in R was NOT on my summer bingo card. This podcast is already a win in my book.

Kyle about the punch in the throat after Va Tech: "At first I couldn't breathe... then I felt fine, but my throat was feeling weird... but then all of a sudden I was like, 'oh bleep', I feel something, and then I threw up."

Ryan's recounting of how Kyle looked in the moment is hilarious.

Kyle about the Virginia game: "People kept telling me that's a foul, and I'm like, 'No $#&A that's a foul, you don't have to tell me!'"

If Kyle and Ryan are any indication the team is STILL salty about those results in the Commonwealth, and rightly so.

Kyle on the pros: "If I had gone anywhere else, I probably wouldn't have come back. But I loved Duke so much I wanted to come back for one more year." Hip surgery supposedly didn't play any role in the decision.

Time to get potential recruits listening to this podcast.

On the hips: Apparently he knew before the season that he'd eventually need surgery on the hips, which had been an issue since high school. Says rehab is going well and he's happy with the decision to get the surgery. "I feel like a regular human with hips that function now."

Sounds like the issue affected his ability to get in a deep defensive stance and made his legs fatigue easier, both of which obviously had to have affected him. So we could see a physically improved Flip this fall.

Sounds like he's working on his own over the summer but won't be going full contact until August. But he says he's able to walk around without any pain (which apparently wasn't the case before the surgery!).

Says NIL wasn't a factor in his return, but that NIL is a great benefit and is going to keep improving the quality of the college game.

    Ryan

I liked when Ryan asked him about visiting other schools, including Northwestern, before choosing Duke and told Kyle "you wouldn't have gotten as much time there."

I literally LOLd at the part when Kyle talked about better defense and jumping higher and Kyle said that Ryan needed some of that. Ryan responded that he needed a surgery to increase his vertical by 6 inches!

I hope one of the lessons that they learned in that game was akin to the old boxing adage that you never let the decision go to the judges.

    Ryan: "Favorite food?"

    Kyle: "Surf and turf."

Ryan: "That's two foods, I only asked for one. If I asked for a dish you could say surf and turf but I only want one food."

    Kyle: "Ok, then wings."

My god this is incredible stuff!
Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

This is now my second favorite podcast! Love the banter between the two, and Young does a great job as host. It's pretty amazing to get this kind of direct access to the players and to hear them describe their experiences in their own words. Yet another reason why Duke's social media team is far and away the best.

If I had one tip for MC Young, it would be to be conscious of how he uses his hands while on screen. He bites his nails, picks at things, looks at his nails etc. Not the best look. He can certainly improve with practice. But his management of the interview was good.
As for sentences 2 and 3, it helps immensely to have players who are articulate and willing to think through things a little bit and able to not solely use clichés. I know Flip used a few here and there, but for the most part he and Ryan were worth listening to. I definitely enjoyed the obvious still-seething anger about how things went down in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Ryan, don’t take newscaster lessons on my account.

I like the fact that they acted like typical college students (only a foot taller and able to tell stories about games with such immediacy that it was almost like they knew what it felt like to be throwing up into a towel, on national tv, after getting socked in the neck without getting a call).

Watching Ryan do his thing on YouTube reminded me that there are lots of ways to go pro in basketball, especially for guys who play in the Duke rotation. Coaching, agent-ing, admin, media….

I imagine Ryan could do any of those in addition to spending time playing in Europe. Nevertheless, if I were a headhunter doing a search for a big man coach who relates well to star players, is smart, and understands the fundamentals of post play, I’d already be giving him a call. I said the same sort of thing about Neal Begovich, who might be coming to Duke for basketball grad school as a stepping stone to a non-playing basketball career, with the biggest difference is that we already know what Ryan brings to the table.

Might Ryan replace Amile as a big man coach? There are open spots. I have no idea if Ryan actually wants a gig like that, of course, but it's an intriguing idea to just leave that position open for him if he's interested.

Great minds and all that. In the Amile Jefferson to the Celtics thread, I somewhat facetiously suggested Ryan become a player-coach. I suspect he already does that, to some degree.

Given his obvious business acumen, I wonder whether he'd be interested in working with Rachel Baker on the NIL side of things...
