Duke Women Win ACC Outdoor Championship Convincingly Behind ACC Record 145.5 Points
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Duke women's track and field team notched its second ACC Outdoor Championship, and first outright title, in the past three seasons as the Blue Devils finished off a dominant and historic performance at the three-day conference Saturday evening at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility.
The Blue Devils won the ACC title going away as the squads totaled a whopping 145.5 points – 61 points more than runner-up Virginia Tech. The 145.5 points scored by Duke in this year's ACC Women's Championship are the most since the ACC expanded to 15 teams in 2014, breaking the previous record of 134 by Florida State in 2019. On the men's side, Duke finished with 51 points to place ninth.
Overall, Duke crowned two ACC Champions, produced 21 medals and earned 35 All-ACC honors over the course of the weekend.

Congratulations!
Outstanding performance. Spring Sports teams at Duke are very competitive this year. Hope Duke keeps winning.
Sweet. Congrats.

Congratulations to Coach Wilbourn and the team. The team scored across multiple events and many individuals contributed to the record breaking score. Best of luck in the Regionals and Nationals!
So I guess Duke is giving funding a bunch of scholarships now? Don't think we used to...

'When I got on the bus for my first road game at Duke, I saw that every player was carrying textbooks or laptops. I coached in the SEC for 25 years, and I had never seen that before, not even once.' - David Cutcliffe to Duke alumni in Washington, DC, June 2013
Given the large number of events, that’s a low cap for scholarships. That might disadvantage the largest, traditionally-successful teams since they can’t load up on athletes the way that elite programs do in football.
Otoh, maybe young women have just become disturbingly unathletic. This is from the ACC website:
“Duke received a first-place finish by Megan McGinnis, who ran a personal-best 51.42 in the 100 meters.”
Uhm…

Speaking of the 4x400 relay team, this outdoor ACC Championship had to be sweet for Duke after an almost unbelievable ending to the 2023 ACC Indoor Championship.
Strange things sometimes happen in relay races (the USA Olympic 4x100 Men's team has had some very disappointing outings), but this is one of the strangest, and ultimately figured big in the Team championship.
Things get hairy around the 5:50 mark

Seven Blue Devils Earn USTFCCCA All-America Honors, Women’s 4x400m Relay Advances to Saturday Final
https://goduke.com/news/2023/6/9/tra...day-final.aspx
AUSTIN, Texas – The Duke women's track and field team turned in a solid day of competition on Thursday as the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships saw seven Blue Devil women garner United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America honors while the women's 4x400m relay booked its spot in Saturday's event final.
Yeah, watched the TV coverage last night. It was not a very good day for the Blue Devils women -- did not finish the 4x100 relay due to a botched baton pass, and IMO under-performed in events like the Javelin, Long Jump, 1500m, and 800m where I thought they had some chance to earn points.
Good to see the 4x400 women's relay team make the finals with the 5th best time in the field, and may be able to better that by a spot or two in the finals.
The program is on the rise overall but not yet a top 10 type on the national scene.
Agreed, there was only one personal best that I could see... Megan McGinnis in the 400 M with a 51.30, but it only got her 11th place.
Incidently, the 51.30 is a Duke school record, breaking her own record of 51.43 set earlier this year.
Duke's time in the 4 x 400 M Relay of 3:28.84 is the fifth best going into the finals tomorrow. Its their only shot for any points.
Duke's record in this event is 3:27.14 set earlier this year. Look for a possible school record tomorrow. Race time is 10:21 pm CT.

Maatoug, Women’s 4x400 Earn USTFCCCA All-America First Team Honors; Agina Earns Nod to Second Team

AUSTIN, Texas – Duke track and field closed out the NCAA Outdoor Championships in record-breaking fashion as the Blue Devil women collected a trio of United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America honors – two first team and one second team – in the high jump, 5,000m and 4x400m relay.
Looks like the women clocked a 3:28:65 in the 4x400 M Relay, good for 8th place (out of 9) in the finals. Ever so slightly better (0.19 sec) than their semifinal time, but not besting their record from earlier this season.
