Looks like Begovich tweeted it himself, too:

Looking at Begovich’s stats must be a practice player like Catchings and Johns.

    And here's his stats: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb...egovich-1.html

Is this more of Kale Catchings type addition?

Not exactly the pickup folks were hoping for. Only given a schollie a year ago as a redshirt junior, never played more than 4mpg, with the rest of his stats expectedly low.

Currently with 2 open scholarships, I kind of have to wonder if this is indicative of a sign that Roach will be moving on, IF we are still pursuing a 5 from the portal. I'm not sure Begovich fits the mold of the 5 we are seeking.

    Welcome to Duke Neal Begovich!

The kid deserves his own thread rather than to be lumped in with the larger Transfer Portal discussion https://twitter.com/Lil_Bego/status/1656370937456123905

As you might be able to tell from his stats, Neal was a walk-on at Stanford, but eventually earned his scholarship in one of those now ubiquitous heart-warming moments.

There's nothing bad about having older practice players, especially with size. And given the academic issues with the 2022 squad that the podcast crew dug up, knowing that he's twice been on the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll doesn't hurt either.

Should we have a new category of transfers: APR Boosters. :-)

Certainly welcome! I mentioned this in the transfers thread, but I'm assuming this takes us from 2 open scholarships down to 1? I have to wonder that IF we are still seeking a 5 from the portal, is this move indicative that the staff have received some word from Roach that he will not be returning?

Gosh I hope so. I have a tough time seeing how this guy could add more to the team than Stanley Borden.

Great point! An economics major sure will help with that!

I would assume he is not on scholarship...though I really don't know. Until Roach and a potential 5 are clarified, they won't be handing out scholarships.

I would speculate that he could be on the Max Johns track, who I believe was treated as a preferred walk-on (and thus didn't have a scholarship), but of course benefitted from the team-wide NIL opportunities Rachel Baker arranged.

If there's a scholarship available, my guess is he'd be first in line, but I highly doubt he was promised one.

Certainly would seem to suggest Roach not coming back as Begovich is plainly a practice player at most. Hopefully, his academic performance will count for next year's ARP, as his LinkedIn page indicates he's a 3x NABC and 3x Pac 12 Honor Roll member. http://www.linkedin.com/in/neal-begovich-98a3b51b5/

Seems like a "broadening his horizons" situation, as his resume indicates past internships with Condi Rice, a private equity firm and Morgan Stanley, and an internship this summer with the NBA.

He's definitely cheeky, as his cv claims he lead the Stanford team in FG%, which I suppose would technically be true when he went 3-3 from the field for the season in 2020-2021, and could also be true when he went 1-2 from the field for the season in 2021-2022.

I know we haven't had that "impact" portal player that many are thirsty for, but I believe that Theo Johns, Ryan Young, Jacob Grandson, et al are very good leaders and good practice players. Their contributions may not be as flashy as the starters, but their impact is immense - particularly with young teams.

I don't see how this suggests Roach is not coming back.

Ditto. I couldn't imagine a more unrelated piece of news...

There is ZERO player overlap, but I think the poster is simply suggesting it from a "number of schollies available" perspective IF Begovich is getting one.
