Blanca Thomas, who I was disappointed we missed on, has fallen from #10 to #26. So what do I know?

Vanessa de Jesus, playing for the Philippines in the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup today, is the best player on the team.

Unfortunately, the Philippines are not a very good team. They lost to Australia 105-34, but Vanessa led the team with 18 points. Yep, 18 of their 34 points. It's good experience for Vanessa, and she shot 4 of 5 from 3 and 7 of 12 overall. The team shot 20%, no other player made more than 1 basket. I think the Philippines has a women's league, she will be able to name her price in pisos after graduating if she wants to play there.

Doesn't look good for the Philippines. They face 5-time defending FIBA Women's Asia Cup champions Japan tomorrow (11:30 EDT tonight). They got a tough draw (Australia is also a top FIBA Asia team) and probably won't make it out of the group stage.

Philippines did somewhat better against Japan, only losing by 38. Vanessa had 12 points (joint high scorer) and four assists in 35 minutes, but didn’t shoot it well (5-15, including 1-6 from three).

I was thinking that after the previous game, Japan was going to pay some attention to her. She doesn't appear to have much help though as a team they did better this game. The Philippines appears to be a ways from competing with Japan, Australia, and China. They just need to show progress, which is difficult since their best player (Vanessa) will soon be heading home to Durham.

There were no expectations for the first two games. The idea was to plan for third game where they would have at least some shot of upsetting Taiwan and avoiding the relegation game for the bottom team in each group. Previously, the top three have been far above the rest, South Korea has been ahead of New Zealand, which has been way ahead of Taiwan, and then the bottom two were clearly just trying to avoid dropping to Division B. Taiwan's program is on the decline and they did not bring a strong roster, missing players like the one nicknamed "Chinese Iverson" so being in this group was a big opportunity and this has been an incredible game as Vanessa led them with 25 points in a 92-81 win:

A relegation game against Lebanon could have been tricky. Instead, they wait for the result of the next game to determine who they will play for a spot in Olympic qualifying on Friday. If China defeats South Korea as expected, the opponent will be New Zealand, which has failed to secure a spot in global qualifying in dramatic fashion every time since this format has been adopted.

While there is a professional women's league now, it is not very organized yet so that seems an unlikely destination for her. While basketball is far and away the most popular sport in the Philippines, it is historically considered to be primarily for men and women are more encouraged to play volleyball. The recruitment of American-born players like Vanessa is supercharging their youth national teams and now impacting the senior level, especially given how well they are bringing in players at a young age so they do not count as naturalized and can play with Vanessa. Americans who are not quite NCAA D1-caliber are also finding opportunities in college there.

Vanessa leads her team to a 92-81 win. The Philippines led Chinese Taipei by 13 at the half but the lead had shrunk to 4 with 4 minutes left when Vanessa stole the ball which led to 2 points. They were never threatened again.

Vanessa led the team with 25 points. She is clearly the MVP of the Philippines squad.

It was a tough individual game for Vanessa, but the Philippines definitely had New Zealand sweating in the fourth quarter before losing. The Tall Ferns were led by Washington State point guard Charlisse Leger-Walker, but nearly messed up their golden opportunity to finally move on to a global qualifying tournament.

Vanessa will play one more game against South Korea, which starts in a few minutes. The team more than accomplished what it set out to do and will also get to play in FIBA competition summer.

Curious why Go Duke is not posting a complete roster for 2023/24 ? Duke Women's B'Ball needs to be more proactive. Promote the program tell your fans what is going on?

With 2 of the 3 group stage games completed (no games tomorrow), '24 recruit Toby Fournier is one of the stars of the FIBA U19 Women's World Cup.

In the win against China, she had 15 points and 14 rebounds. In the win against the Czech Republic, she had 17 and 17. But she needs to work on her free throw shooting (8 of 21 ) or teams will deploy Hack-a-Toby.

Emma Koabel is getting limited minutes and went 2 and 1, and 0 and 0. But she is getting good experience and it's an honor and accomplishment to be picked to represent your country.

For the USA, Jadyn Donovan is not getting much burn for Coach Taylor, she has gotten among the fewest minutes on the team so far. She's gone for 5 and 0 (Mali), and 7 and 1 (Germany).

NCAA.com: NCAA creates Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament

The NCAA has announced the creation of the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament. The 32-team postseason tournament, which will be owned and funded by the NCAA, will be held annually beginning in 2024.

With the addition of the WBIT, 100 postseason NCAA-funded opportunities will be available for Division I women's basketball teams, equal to that of men's basketball through its two events (the 68-team championship and 32-team National Invitation Tournament). Details about the tournament's format — including the selection process, bracketing principles and host sites — will be released later.
