Who the NBA calls is of no interest to me, I'm more interested in who Scheyer is calling.

Agreed he needs to go somewhere he can be the point, but the other thing he has to answer is what is the level of talent around him? In the G-League, it will likely be better than what he will find in most other programs that will give him time in the 1 role next year.

How is it too soon? Our season is past tense. Jon Scheyer’s first year as Duke head coach has concluded. The One-And-Dones are done.

Lively needs about two years of strength training before he plays in the NBA. I’m sure many teams would love to have him but he won’t play much right away.

I'd say there's a distinction between playing much on an NBA roster and being in the G-League. I also think Lively is the best candidate for making an NBA team right away and getting some minutes, even if garbage time run.

I don’t think he’s ready to contribute and I think the team who drafts him will want him to get some minutes. That would put him spending time in the g league.

Also, last mock I saw had him drafted in the 20s. Those are playoff teams. He’s not ready to contribute con NBA playoff teams. He didn’t even score today or take a shot.

Under Coach K we had very few players test the waters - they declared early one way or another. I’m not sure how much of this was K’s advisement versus just being the way things shook out. Last season Keels drew out his decision as long as humanly possible, literally until an hour before the deadline to withdraw. Jon supported him all the way through, keeping the door open for him to return while helping him through the process. We probably cost ourselves a shot at getting a more high profile transfer player than Grandison, but maintaining the relationship was important to Jon and it likely reflects positively for future recruits to see how he handled it.

I’ll be curious to see what happens this year when we have multiple guys who are borderline as to whether they should go. It would make sense for Proctor, Mitchell, and maybe even Roach to test the waters. Flip is also a guy who draws a wide range of opinions from NBA guys, some see him as a lottery pick and others a mid second rounder. So he could benefit from getting an evaluation too. But will Jon hold spots for all of them while portal players sign elsewhere? What about the committed recruits who expected time to be available that now might not be? It’s a lot to juggle.

I maintain that him and Reeves are a pretty solid center platoon if Kyle leaves, one that could get better if Sean Stewart lives up to his lofty ranking and can play some small ball 5.

Again, another place where we’ll have continuity, which Coach Scheyer has explicitly said he wants. We won’t be starting over from scratch next year, even if we’re building from multiple role/developing players. It’ll certainly be more returning than JUST Roach/Blakes.
Yes, Ryan and Reeves will be a great inside duo. I’ll just be happy if Mitchell returns. He’s so underrated.

He’s not ready but somebody is going to take a chance on him. He’s a 7-1 gazelle who can block everything. He doesn’t need the ball and shows he knows his role. Who knows if he’ll ever play nba minutes. He’ll spend a lot of time in the D league. At worst, he’ll make a nice living overseas.

Flip is going to need to work on shooting to get playing time in NBA. Big slow iso isn’t going to work

When Young announced he was coming back I was pretty ecstatic, and I still like that we’ll have him for another year but I’m less optimistic that he and Reeves will be “enough.” After being our offensive anchor for the first half of the season he has fallen off so much, I no longer see him as a starting caliber center. We’ll hopefully have better shooting around him next season but even with Stewart playing some minutes at the 5 I think we need to go after a portal big and let Young continue coming off the bench.

IMO Lively, Whitehead, and Roach go

    Flip, Mitchell, and Proctor stay

    Blakes and Schutt transfer

    Proctor, McCain
    Foster, McCain
    Mgbako, Stewart
    Mitchell, Flip
    Flip, Young, Reeves

Pencil us in for a trip to Phoenix next year if those three all stay.

If Flip and Proctor alone stay we're going to be set.

History is against anyone returning from the freshman class. Every player in this class is better than all the kids who left the program after one year only to either go in the 2nd round or not get drafted at all in the last seven years. Gary Trent Jr the lone exception. If Keels, Jackson, Stanley, Trent Jr, to name a few, can get 2nd round money than so will every freshman on this year's roster.

We get to watch another team next year that will be heavily reliant on freshman (again) and will eventually lose to an older, more mature program in March. This years team was fortunate that both Miami and Virginia lost their best big men during the ACC tournament. Would we have won anyway. We will never know. But older teams win in March. And we get younger every year.

Jon will need to go to the portal to get some experience on next years team if he plans to make a run. Or a miracle that a few freshmen become sophomores.

I’m not arguing that no one will take a chance on him. I think a team like the Warriors would love to have him. He just isn’t ready to contribute yet.

I agree. I also have doubts that Reeves can go from non rotation to starter.
