    No AP for Me

    AP what’s that?

First I want to say, “Stay off my lawn!!

Good, that’s out of the way. On to other things.
The AP discussion got me thinking about how my experience differed from more recent times.

Things we did/didn’t have in my time/place growing up.
    Time - mid-sixties
Place - small town in the piedmont of NC

    We didn’t have:
AP classes. Had they been invented?
    Middle school
    Junior high
    Coaching/studying for SATs
No soccer, wrestling, tennis, cheerleading (as a sport).
No band. School was too small to have both football team and a band.

    We did have:
Elementary school 1-8. High school 9-12
    Walking to/from school unattended.
No parents present when I & brothers got home after school.
(Was I a latchkey kid? I thought it was fun.)
    Fields and trails and creeks.
Kick the can with neighbor kids.
Football, basketball, baseball, track in high school.
    Newspaper route on my bike.

In college at Davidson - ’67-’71
    Morning chapel
    All male student body
20 miles from civilization (before Lake Norman blew up things)
Change in curriculum while there, from semester to trimester.
Fraternities were big. Around 75% of student body joined.
(Why? All male school in the middle of nowhere.)
    Also, no I-77 or I-485.

Gradual school at Duke - ’71-’74
Didn’t see much, mostly buried in basement of physics dept.
Did see basketball games. Lots of good seats available.

    It was intended as whimsical.

    Walt:
    Daddy what's gradual school?

    T. S. Garp:
    What?

    Walt:
Gradual school. Mommy say's she teaches at gradual school.

    T. S. Garp:
Oh... Gradual school is where you go to school and you gradually find out you don't want to go to school anymore.

Ditto for me. Raised within about 20 miles from you (I’m guessing from your previous posts), in a similar small town. I’m betting that students from farming families there were also given automatic excuses from classes at harvest time. Pickup trucks had fully equipped gun racks, but any disputes were settled with fists…guns were for hunting.

    Good times!

It’s nice to say that but historically gun violence was worse back then and steadily improved up until the early 2000s. The difference being how much 24/7 news we have now compared to back then. It’s why it’s easy for people to think things were better back then, yet almost all violent crime was higher and ask any teacher who’s taught across multiple decades and they will tell you the kids of today are kinder and more well behaved. Heck I see it and I don’t teach. The kids today have attention issues.

This may well be, and probably is true for some areas, but it wasn’t true in my rural area, of which I was speaking.
