    And in the master's chambers
    They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

My gosh, from which obscure song is that frightening song lyric? 😉

QFE. Not just Baker Street and Right Down the Line, but also The Ark, Stealin' Time, Whatever's Written in Your Heart, Home and Dry, and the title track. A treasure trove that I somehow didn't discover until years later.

BTW, I don't understand how Steely Dan is classified as "rock". They are less rock-like than the Eagles, IMO. Their main influence is jazz. Complex rhythms, chord structures, and sooo smooth. I prefer it on top-drawer speakers to headphones, but in any case, careful listening only makes it better.

    I know it’s on Amazon.

Here’s one song from YouTube — there are more there I am sure:

IMO, Henley has a great voice but his ego entertains me. I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with Joe Vitale. Joe is a really nice guy with minimal ego. The fact Don was challenged by Joe’s skills speaks volumes.

The early Doobies is on the top of my American rock band list, for sure. Long Train Runnin' got me started with them, and is still a favorite song of mine, but after buying the album I discovered that even that song was a distant second to the utterly sublime South City Midnight Lady; that song still gives me goose-bumps.

45 years later, I'm still upset at what Michael McDonald did to that band (or what the band members let him do).

Just seeing this. This is my list (by tier). I know this isn't the list most would choose, but it's what I like. Also, if Prince and the Revolution count as Rock, they're in my top tier.

    Tier 1:
    Metallica
    Nirvana

    Tier 2:
    Guns N Roses
    Chili Peppers
    Eagles
    Tom Petty
    Green Day
    Foo Fighters
    Aerosmith
    CCR
Simon and Garfunkel (But i have read really bad things about Paul Simon. If you can find the story about Los Lobos and Paul Simon, you will think much less of Paul Simon).

    Tier 3
    REM
    Radio Head
Hair Bands - Bon Jovi, Motley Crue (not a great band but sort of defined a period in American Music), Van Halen, Journey
    Linkin Park
    Beach Boys
    STP

    Interesting list; thanks for posting.

Radiohead is Tier 1 on my list. Incredible band.

I had intended to also mention that Radiohead is not American; they are from England.

So I guess this isn’t the right thread for them.

Aerosmith is better than the Eagles by a country mile.
And Wilco is the best American rock band.
    That is all.

One of the great rock masterpieces of the past 50 years, American or otherwise.
