    Horse Racing 2023

Welcome to the new year of horse racing. I welcome any new members and encourage you to interact, make observations, ask questions, and contribute.

As a (previous) horse owner and breeder of standardbreds, and big fan of Thoroughbreds (TBreds - my brother owns and breeds them, so I'm tuned in) I try to provide a heads-up on Horse Racing in the USA and sometimes other parts of the world. I often provide Past Performances (PPs) for races of interest. Focus is often on the Road to the Triple Crown in TBred racing, and the Breeder's Cup.

Comments, suggestions, and observations are welcome.

    New Year's Day 2023

Happy Birthday to all Northern Hemisphere TBreds!
For you Southern Hemisphere horses, your birthday is August 1 (odd, but OK).

Here are a few races of interest for Sunday 1/1/2023:

On the road to the KYD, we have:

The Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park. I mentioned in the HR 2022 thread (no, this is not CSPAN) that last year the Smarty Jones Stakes, that was run in Pennsylvania (Smarty Jones home state for racing and stud duty), was run at the end of the year for 2YOs. This year, it is New Year's Day and .. for 3YOs. The horses have no clue about this of course.

    [ URL above; January 1, 2023; Oaklawn Park - Race 8; PPs]
Victory Formation will be the obvious favorite and Ten Days Later, Denington, and Communication Memo look like the top contenders. The top finishers will no doubt stay on the Arkansas road to the roses.

The Mucho Macho Man will be run at Gulfstream in Race 9:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
    [ URL above; January 1, 2023; Oaklawn Park - Race 9; PPs]
Legacy Isle and General Jim are likely favorite candidates with this lightly raced bunch. The Smarty Jones crew is much more experienced. No KYD points, but top finishers are likely to stay on the Gulfstream Park (or Tampa Bay Downs) roads to the roses.

At Santa Anita, the Santa Ynez for fillies on the trail of the KYO, will be on display:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[ URL above; January 1, 2023; Santa Anita Park - Race 7; PPs]
This is by far the highest quality race of the weekend with Justique, Ice Dancing, and Parody likely to compete for high laurels.

"It doesn't rain in California, but girl don't they warn ya, it pours, man it pours." the refrain from the Albert Hammond song.

Well, it is evidently too wet at Santa Anita for them to run the races (safely). So the Santa Ynez is postponed or cancelled.

Do you need a sire to mate with your mare this year? Breeding season starts February 15th (note horses have an 11 month gestation period, so breeding earlier might risk being born a few days before you turn 1YO).

There is an auction starting Wednesday for stallion seasons, including Flightline; yes someone donated a share.

So what are the interesting races this weekend?

We do have 2 Run For The Roses points races this weekend:

At Santa Anita, the Sham Stakes will be run on Sunday and the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday.

    Saturday:

    At Aqueduct, the Jerome Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [URL above; January 7, 2023; Aqueduct - Race 8, PPs ]
Arctic Arrogance and Adiamo A Firenze (Firenze Fire's bro) look to be the class. Adiamo has been out since October, but Arctic Arrogance raced just a month ago. There are several horses entered that took a huge step up in the mud of last month; they probably return to earth on Saturday.

    Sunday:

At Santa Anita is the Sham Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[URL above; January 8, 2023; Santa Anita Park - Race 8, PPs ]
National Treasure and Speed Boat Beach look like the main contenders; Newgate, under new management, was impressive early but seems to have plateaued. Spun Intended was picked by Mike Smith over other horses.

The Santa Ynez for the fillies is also on the card at Santa Anita:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[URL above; January 8, 2023; Santa Anita Park - Race 6, PPs ]
Ice Dancing, Parody, and Justique are the main contenders. Ice Dancing has the biggest number, but it is off a maiden win; she ran against tougher in 2 stakes races before the maiden win. Justique appears to have the class, but on the surface is not as fast as ID; but she hasn't had to be.

If I looked at this correctly the Sham is a six horse field with 4 trained by Baffert. Since Baffert is banned from from Churchill why should his trainees be eligible for Derby points? Churchill could have withheld points and forced owners to switch trainers earlier. On the other hand if any of his prospects prove to be really good maybe losing them at the last minute is a more bitter pill for Baffert. One thing for sure, the 2024 Derby will have some backstory, Baffert trying to win to give Churchill the finger in the winner’s circle.

The issue you state is on hold because Baffert filed an injunction 3 days ago:
    https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-rac...on-against-cdi
He states that he will lose owners because his horses can't compete (duh).

Frankly, I don't expect him to win this legal action.

Remember that last year, quite a few of Baffert's horses moved to other barns so they could have a larger choice of places to compete. For example, Life Is Good went to Pletcher.

The 3YOx races at Santa Anita are today.

    Eclipse Award nominations are out:
    https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.co...nalists-named/
Of course the paradox of awards in racing is that awards are an Opinion (your mileage may vary depending on who you are and what you've seen) vs. Performance (just mileage).

The Sham Stakes was won by Reincarnate:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1612233550660603904 (How's your spanish?).
Reincarnate went to the front and would not give in in a stirring stretch duel.
The likely favorite, Speed Boat Beach, was scratched before the race. Newgate put in a great effort but didn't have enough. Reincarnate is yet another son of Good Magic to make people take notice. This looks like a bumper year for new sires who will vie for years in the top ten.

In the Santa Ynez, the beautiful (roan) Ice Dancing looked great for underappreciated sire Frosted:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1612218186967175168
As with the Sham Stakes, this (small) group of fillies was diminished by the scratching of the highly regarded Justique. Ice Dancing looks like a big filly, which will serve her well. But Frosted was at his best at 1 mile, not classic distances.

There was an interesting Optional Claimer at Gulfstream Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1612200962344775680
I had my eye on Litigate (a Todd Pletcher horse who had shown some speed), but it was Cyclone Mischief who won by a lot. Both of these horses were first time Lasix, and that won't do for the KYD preps. Cyclone Mischief received a 90 Beyer and is worth watching.

    Weakend of 1/14-15/2023

I did not mis-spell the Title since I intended to convey that this weekend's 3YO races were 'weak' relative to what is happening in coming (stronger) weeks.

    On Saturday:

At Aqueduct, it is the Busanda for 3YO fillies:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January 14, 2022; Aqueduct - Race 8, PPs ]
Gambling Girl and Affirmative Lady are your likely lead combatants. The track will be drying out.

There are a couple of 3YO races at Tampa Bay, but I only have the filly race (the Gaspirilla) on PPs. The Pasco is unavailable (at least at the moment):

The Gaspirila (sounds like a drink) is being raced on Saturday:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...7/summary.html
[ URL above; Saturday January 14, 2022; Tampa Bay Downs - Race 9, PPs ]
Dorth Vader and Dreaming of Snow are the top contenders. Unless there is a big improvement in form, you won't be seeing either in the KYO; but they may go onto other Road To The X races.

The Pasco is for 3YO Colts, at Tampa Bay Downs - Race 6 on Saturday.
Champions Dream is the morning line favorite; he is by Justify; Mark Casse is the only top trainer in the race. The other contenders are by humble pie sires, so without a set of PPs, I'd go with Champions Dream.

If you want to see owners tear what's left of their hair out, you might look in on the 4th race at Santa Anita:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[ URL above; Saturday January 14, 2022; Santa Anita Park - Race 4, PPs ]
Hijazi will be making his 4th attempt at breaking his maiden; trained by Bob Baffert, this horse only cost $3.550 Million. Maybe being on 1st time Lasix (betting angle) will do the trick. But if #6, who cost only $4k and is making his first start, wins, the owners of Hijazi will again gain some (unwanted) knowledge and experience.

Santa Anita is a washout for Saturday; Hijazi will have to wait for another day to disappoint his owners.

However, I did find another race of interest, to the KYD trail no less:

Take this Optional Claimer for 3YO at Oaklawn Park Race 4:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January 14, 2022; Oaklawn Park - Race R, PPs ]
Several horses of interest in here.
    • Two River Eagles ran a very tough 2nd in the Renaissance Stakes a few weeks ago.
    • Judo finished 2nd in his last race to the highly regarded Frosted Departure.
    • Verifying finished 6th in the BC Juvenile.
Judo and Verifying are both Brad Cox trainees and are first time Lasix (still not allowed for KYD preps and the KYD).
    • Gun Pilot is a son of Gun Runner coming off a good number in his only, winning start.

KY Derby Futures Pool 3 - PPs

I found the KYD Futures Pool #3 in the URLs, but oddly not on the KYD Futures Pool web page. NOT MY PROBLEM!!

Here is a page with a pointer to the KYD Futures Pool 3:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above; Friday January 20, 2023; Ky Derby Future - Race 3; PPs ]

I'll post the Morning Line odds page for this pool when it appears.

The oddest part of this set of PPs is that the horse that has been sitting on top of the Top Ten Lists, Arabian Knight ($2.3M yearling and undefeated with 1 start), is not in the Future Pool as a separate entry. It just goes to show you that this is the beginning of the KYD trail and nobody knows too much about where these horses will be on the first Saturday in May. Arabian Knight will possibly start in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, if he starts in February; or he may wait till the Santa Anita Derby.

Here is a listing of the top 50 Thoroughbreds (any age or gender), but it does have last and probable next start listed.
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/po...ankings_Active
A lot of KYD contenders here.

Here is a list of the KYD contenders:

Arabian Knight will possibly start in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, if he starts in February; or he may wait till the Santa Anita Derby.

Here is a listing of the top 50 Thoroughbreds (any age or gender), but it does have last and probable next start listed.

A lot of KYD contenders here.

Here is a list of the KYD contenders:

Several contenders will be in the Le Comte this weekend.

Thanks for the two lists. If I counted correctly 6 of the three year olds are in the Le Comte in New Orleans. That should help sort some of that out. If my memory is correct, which is always a big if at my age, a few years ago Hot Rod Charlie, Mandaloun and others kept beating each other at the Fairgrounds that winter as three year olds. All proved to be good if not great horses. We’ll see if any horse can really separate himself from the others this weekend.

Of the top horses still in training I was surprised to see Clariere, a good but not great mare. I guess there is more money in continuing to race her than retire her. Also noticed last year’s Derby winner is heading to Saudi Arabia this spring. I’m guessing he will then return to Churchill Downs for the Stephen Foster in June. His Derby race was so impressive I still can’t figure out if he is a really good horse or just a one hit wonder.

    Lecomte - Weeknd 1/21/2023

The Lecomte will be run at the Fair Grounds on Saturday. This is the initial race for the KYD trail through Louisiana; Mandaloun raced through these prep races.

The Lecomte is Race 14 at the Fair Grounds:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January, 19 2023; Fair Grounds - Race 14; PPs ]
Two Phils and Instant Coffee look to be the class. Confidence Game and Bromley are just a tick below those two, but these are young horses and certainly can improve rapidly. Tapit's Conquest is double entered here and the 9th Race. I would be betting non-favorites if there was a clear top choice. Notice that there is a difference between which horse you think will win (best shown ability) vs. which horse you bet (best value of returning capital).

The Silverbulletday, for 3YO Fillies, is Race 12 at the Fair Grounds:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January, 19 2023; Fair Grounds - Race 12; PPs ]
These fillies are either recent losers to high quality mares or recent first time winners. Forest Chimes looks like a capable second time starter.

Also of interest on the card at the Fair Grounds is an 80k Optional Claimer with quite a few 3YO contenders:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January, 19 2023; Fair Grounds - Race 9; PPs ]
Determinedly is marked as the morning line favorite, but do you really want a horse that took till his 6th start to break his maiden? He is first time Lasix and finished a decent 3rd to Jace's Road. Banishing, Echo Again, and Tapit's Conquest are all considered Top 50 horses in training (based on that list I pointed to yesterday). The other entrants are recent winners. Banishing over Determinedly IMHO.

Apparently I forgot how to spell weekend.

    KYD Future Pool 3 - 2023

The Kentucky Derby Futures Pool #3 is now up for your (early) betting pleasure:
    https://www.kentuckyderby.com/wager/...r/derby-pool-3

A new feature is live odds (instead of a PDF).
I wonder how the horses in the Lecomte will finish compared to these odds.

PPs are at the bottom of the page.

Here's an article about the 23 KYD prospects that are racing today:
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne...e_Saturday_123

Here are a couple of the races mentioned in the article that I hadn't previously posted:

    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; January 21, 2023; Tampa Bay Downs - Race 4; PPs ]
Two first time Curlin starters, trained by Todd Pletcher, are favored here. Ringside is a $1.3M purchase whose workouts are nothing to write home about; must be some inside information. There is a 40% chance of precipitation at Tampa Bay Downs today so expect scratches and the prominence of mudders.

Spectacular Bid Stakes entrants are just not that good.

Another maiden race, this time at Aqueduct (Race 9):
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; January 21, 2023; Aqueduct - Race 9; PPs ]
Other than Yorkshire Prince, ALL of the other horses are either first time starters or first time lasix. Could be a price here, although Slip Mahoney looks capable even without adding Lasix. You could get a big payoff in this one (too many unknowns).

Back to Tampa Bay Downs, Race 8:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...7/summary.html
    [ URL above; January 21, 2023; Tampa Bay Downs - Race 8; PPs ]
Horses are coming back after a layoff, but there seems to be some talent.

BTW, for those of you who were interested in that drug ring scandal a couple of years ago, the last of the defendants was sentence this week and received about 5 years in federal prison (and he cooperated). There is some cautionary message in that. But then, who of these guys ever thought they'd be caught?

In the Lecomte, Instant Coffee put in a quality performance:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1616961252902998016
Instant Coffee was last going into the final turn; he then picked it up, picked off horses, and went 5 wide to drive past Two Phil's (who may be heard from Echo Again, the second favorite (and a fast horse), led the way for 3/4 of the race but started to fade and was pulled up; word is that he is fine.

The Silverbulletday was won by The Alys Look:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1616946151999303681
She won a heated battle over the favorite Chop Chop; these 2 fillies were far and away the best in the field (by 13 lengths over the third place horse).

In that loaded Optional Claimer/Allowance race Determinedly was the winner, and best adverb of the day:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1616922387060228097
Tapit's Conquest (on the rail) looked to me to be the best horse though; he seemed pinched at the rail behind the winner and would have accelerated earlier if he had room.

Run Cory Run won one of the maiden races with a few KYD aspiring horses in it:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

At the Aqueduct maiden race, Slip Mahoney just edged out Crupi:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1616910449303515137
They were 15 lengths ahead of the 3rd place horse. These 2 might be worth watching.

    Freedom Road
won the Optional Claimer at Tampa Bay Downs 8th race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on

A very nice first time starter won a maiden race at the Fair Grounds:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1616907729481891840
First Defender made an impressive debut.
