    Lasix Changes

I found this interesting table on twitter:
    lasixOnOff1.jpg
The table shows how the top trainer's win percentage varies depending on trainsitions onto or off-of Lasix. Also included is first time Lasix.

    Here is the thread:
    https://twitter.com/HorseToWatch

    Interesting points of discussion:
    • Horses coming off Lasix appear to do poorer, but that may be because of many of these top trainer's horses have to come off of Lasix for certain top stakes; the competition will (obviously) be greater thus depressing the percentage (when off Lasix) naturally. Worth considering for KYD trail races since they are NO LASIX races.
    • Brad Cox and Bob Baffert would appear to have the highest win percentages with Lasix, but the data may be misleading depending on what their normal win percentage is. Need to see how much better each trainer does vs. their non-Lasix numbers.

    A Few Deaths

For you old timers (or lovers of history), there were some deaths to report in Thoroughbred Horse Racing:

John Veitch, the trainer for Alydar, passed away. He had removed himself from training in recent years and was a steward. He trained other notable racehorses like Davona Dale. I saw Alydar in person 3 times (he finished 2nd all 3 times). As a sire, Alydar was superior to Affirmed and sired KYD winner Alysheba.

Diane Firestone passed away. She and her husband Bert Firestone were prominent owners in the '80s and '90s. They owned KYD winner Genuine Risk. Mrs. Firestone was the granddaughter of Robert Wood Johnson who helped to found Johnson and Johnson, and was a known philanthropist.

We mentioned Burt Bacharach as horse owner in an earlier post. His best horse, Afternoon Deelites, passed away yesterday at the Old Friends Horse Park in Kentucky.

    Races for 2/18/2023

Most action is at the Fair Grounds:

For the 3YO Colts, it is the Risen Star:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above; Saturday February 18, 2023; Fair Grounds - Race 13; PPs]
Victory Formation gets the nod over Determinedly, Private Creed, and Two Phil's. Crupi is a son of Curlin trained by Todd Pletcher; a potent combination.

For the 3YO Fillies, it is the Rachel Alexandra:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above; Saturday February 18, 2023; Fair Grounds - Race 12; PPs]
Chop Chop and Hoosier Philly look likes favorites to be in the exacta; Pretty Mischevious has a chance to hit the board.

An interesting Optional Claimer for 3YOs:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above; Saturday February 18, 2023; Fair Grounds - Race 8; PPs]
Lightly raced colts, with impressive last races, will vie. First Defender and Banishing might be your exacta.

Tiz The Bomb appears for the first time since August, on the turf:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html

    Baffert Denied

Bob Baffert's most recent, and perhaps last, appeal was denied; likely this will keep him from competing in the KYD.
    https://www.wlky.com/article/bob-baf...enied/42959532

In tomorrow's Risen Star stakes you already see that Harlocap (#5) was moved from the Baffert barn to Steve Assmusen's (I will never spell his name correctly ).

Look for an exodus of Baffert's top colts (and fillies) to other barns. This is the last year of the KYD ban for BB.

I take it you don’t care for Mr. Asmussen. I haven’t placed a bet in 2023. No particular reason other than I’ve been doing other things. Today I may play a race or two at Fairgrounds. The Risen Star has produced some good horses, Epicenter from last year and Hot Rod Charlie from two years ago, along with others whose names I don’t immediately recall.

I briefly looked at the race before reading your later comments and immediately noticed Harlocap had switched barns. I could have saved Baffert a lot of legal fees if he had consulted me. He was never going to beat Churchill Downs in a Kentucky court. Not because of home cooking, but because Churchill is a corporation that can ban anyone it wants to with good cause. In this case Baffert had more than one of his horses test positive for a forbidden drug in Churchill’s two biggest races the Derby and the Oaks. Claiming he was simply negligent was never going to win this argument. Poetic justice would be for one of his best three year olds to win the Derby with another trainer, particularly if the owner then sticks with the other trainer for the remainder of the Triple Crown.

Back to the Risen Star, it looks like Cox might win the trifecta.

It would be a perfect weekend to be in New Orleans with Mardi Gras going full blast, if you like that sort of thing.

    Busy day!

In the Risen Star, a new star has arisen in Angel Of Empire:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1627106446059134976
The first graded stakes winner for young sire Classic Empire. Classic Empire never seemed to reach his potential after a nice start as a 2YO. But maybe this son will achieve. AOE was awarded an 87 Beyer.

Earlier on the card, a 3YO named Denington ran a really nice race in an optional claimer:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1627062344126959619
For his off the pace win, Denington was awarded a 91 Beyer.

In a maiden race, the highly regarded Bishop's Bay won at first asking:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1627040111832748032
BB was awarded an impressive 97 Beyer.

In the Rachel Alexandra, Pretty Mischievous was a convincing winner:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1627096702531534852
PM ground down Miracle in the stretch; Hoosier Philly had a bad start and recovered for a distant third.

    For older horses:

Two Emmys trounced the field in the Fair Grounds Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/theTDN/status/1627087604037591040
Two Emmys was awarded a 99 Beyer.

Pioneer of Medina won the Mineshaft Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1627079145770602499
POM was awarded a 99 Beyer

Classy Edition won the Royal Delta Stakes at Gulfstream Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1627072083204407296
Kathleen O did not have her usual early speed and the race pace killed her chances. This was a slow race and turned into a sprint for the last 2 furlongs; KO could not close ranks on Classy Edition. Classy Edition is also by Classic Empire; a great day for CE!

Thank you DevilHorse for linking the Court decision. I enjoyed reading it. Baffert lost on eight of his nine claims. If you read the opinion the only claim still standing was basically eviscerated but the Court left the door slightly ajar for Baffert to try develop more facts in support. The amazing thing to me is it very hard to get a Court to dismiss claims early in a case, yet the Court found 8 of 9 to be invalid. The Court also shot down the request for a preliminary injunction partially because Baffert and his lawyers waited too long to pursue it. (I would hate to be the lawyer trying to explain that to Bob. Particularly when I am sure he has already paid them several hundred thousand dollars.) Based on how his horse ran yesterday in New Orleans, I imagine he will be returning to Bob in California. If that horse was his best Derby prospect then he probably wasn’t going to win the Derby this year, so he hasn’t really lost much by being banned.

Thanks to you I learned two new facts. First, I didn’t realize he was banned from all Churchill Downs tracks, including Fair Grounds. Second, I didn’t realize the track in Louisville is owned by the City of Louisville. At least that means Churchill Downs corporation can’t sell it for development like they did Arlington Park.

You can't tell with Baffert. Remember last year when Taiba won a maiden race (3/5/2022) and then the Santa Anita Derby before the KYD in his 3rd lifetime start? Apparently rules may have changed that will cause him to give up his 'obvious' KYD prospects sooner rather than later.

I'm not sure when the Baffert expulsion ends. Theoretically, this coming KYD is 2 years from the infraction. We know that Pimlico has an open door to him, as does the folks in NJ at Monmouth (the Haskell).

BTW, I do not hate Asmussen. I just wish that he had a Briswatch page so I could follow his (huge) stable. Guys like Baffert, Brown, and Cox have Briswatch pages, which is a service to US so we can track the race PPs (a treat as far as I'm concerned); Asmussen is probably the non-Briswatch trainer I'd most like to see sign up.

And so it begins in earnest:
    https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.co...-new-trainers/

Baffert's top trainees are being doled out to previous associates like Tim Yakteen (picks up KYD early favorite Arabian Knight).

I found the reason why horses are being transferred by the end of February (earlier than last year). It is contained in this article:
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne...rby_horses_123

    The money quote is this:

It was hiding in plain sight nearly a third of the way through 1,660 words of fine print on the Triple Crown nomination form. Now it looms as a deadline in five weeks for trainer Bob Baffert to move his horses in order to make them eligible for Kentucky Derby 2023.

Horses under the care of any suspended trainer or affiliates may be transferred to a non-suspended trainer and become eligible for earning points on a forward-looking basis so long as the transfer is complete by February 28, 2023.

    Only 8 days left.

    Saudi Cup 2023

The world's richest horse race ($20m) will take place on Saturday (2/25/2023) in .. Saudi Arabia.

I've seen it mentioned that this is the weakest field of the Saudi Cup yet; no Eclipse Award winners or champions. But the winner still gets generational money.

Here is a list of the horses in the big race (Race 8):
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/race/2023_Saudi_Cup

Country Grammar finished 2nd in last year's Cup and won the Dubai World Cup. On this side of the atlantic he has been a good (not great) handicap horse in California. But this could be a horses for courses deal.
Taiba is well known to this forum; his last race was a nice victory in the Malibu Stakes. He is the morning line favorite.
Emblem Road is US bred but is owned by the locals; he won this race last year.
There are a couple of Japanese entries that look capable; Cafe Pharoah and Jun Light Bolt are the leading entries from there.

Here are the PPs for the entire race card:
    https://static.drf.com/foreignPPs/ppKAR2599.pdf

For those who care about distance, this race is nominally 1 1/8 miles (1810 m), but the program says 1800 meters; that's a 10 meter difference. That's just life I guess.

Race 8 is nominally slated for 12:35pm and can (probably) be seen on TVG.

    Rebel Stakes

The Rebel Stakes will be this Saturday 2/25/2023.

    At Oaklawn Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February, 25, 2023; Oaklawn Park - Race 11; PPs ]
Giant Mischief, Verifying, Reincarnate, Red Route One, and Gun Pilot seem to be above the fold on contenders. Reincarnate is a recent Baffert refugee, and he seems to be improving after taking 4 starts to break his maiden. Giant Mischief has Irad Ortiz aboard.
Showers are occurring today and tomorrow, so the track is not likely to be fast.
I noticed that Talladega (the horse) won at Oaklawn Park on a wf (Wet Fast) track, so gauging the track condition may be a factor in the result. I don't expect Talladega to be on the board unless the track becomes 'downhill'.

Also at Oaklawn Park is the Honeybee, which is a race for 3YO fillies:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February, 25, 2023; Oaklawn Park - Race 10; PPs ]
Wet Paint, Taxed, and Grand Love look most likely to hit the board.

At the Rebel Stakes, the track was mucky. Yet someone had to finish first:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1629635016157167616
Confidence Game made a sweeping move on the far turn to take the lead and hold on over the fast closing Red Route One. Confidence Game was a longshot, paying $39.00. He is out of a half sister to Zenyatta and was awarded a 94 Beyer. I think this race makes the KYD trail murkier.

At the Honeybee, it was Wet Paint winning from Waaay out of it:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1629644735961874433
Wet Paint was awarded an 83 Beyer. She seems to like distance, but both of her best efforts were on a wet track.

In other news, one of the favorites for the KYD, Loggins, is off the derby trail.

Also, Del Mar will be the site of next year's Breeder's Cup.

    KYD Races - 3/4/2023

Big weekend of races for 3YOs:

There are four 3YO open races with KYD points, four 3YO filly races:

    At Aqueduct is the Gotham:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday March 4, 2023; Aqueduct - Race 9; PPs ]
This is a one turn mile, not exactly leaning toward derby distances, or the need for these horses to be in 2 turn races.
Slip Mahoney is the likely favorite, but the horses here are so lightly raced, it could be any of them. Other horses that look good are Lugan Knight, Recruiter, and Howgreatisnate. 15 horses were entered and only 12 will start; unlike other KYD preps, there are a lot of horses in here.

At Santa Anita is the San Felipe:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday March 4, 2023; Santa Anita - Race 6; PPs ]
National Treasure, Hejazi, and Practical Move all have a chance to hit the board.

At Gulfstream Park is the race of the weekend, the Fountain Of Youth Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...C/9999/summary.
    [ URL above; Saturday March 4, 2023; Gulfstream Park - Race 14; PPs ]
Forte', on of the 2 top rated colts, who won the BC Juvenile, makes his first start against a good field. Also running is Blazing Steven who won the Champagne. And General Jim, who won the Swale Stakes, will try a longer race (he looked like he would like it). Rocket Can, who won the Holy Bull, is also in.

Also, the above races have a total of 50 KYD points to award, but there is a 4th race with 20 KYD points to award, The Battaglia at Turfway Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday March 4, 2023; Turfway Park - Race 8; PPs ]
This race rarely has a contender emerge from it; Gilmore might be a luke warm favorite.

There are races for the 3YO fillies too:

At Aqueduct is the Busher Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday March 4, 2023; Aqueduct - Race 4; PPs ]
Asset Purchase looks like a favorite; Ziaerati also looks keen. Shidabhuti could be coming on late.

At Gulfstream Park is the Davona Dale:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday March 4, 2023; Gulfstream Park - Race 12; PPs ]
Atomically and Red Carpet Ready look like your leaders. Infinite Diamond might hit the board.

And, the filly companion to The Battaglia is the Cincinnati Trophy:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday March 4, 2023; Turfway Park - Race 8; PPs ]
    Botanical looks good here.

    On Sunday:

At Santa Anita, the Santa Ysabel for 3YOF:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Sunday March 5, 2023; Santa Anita - Race 3; PPs ]
The top filly Faiza will be favored; also vying will be Pride Of The Nile, Andtellmenolies, and a filly with something to prove.. Justique.
Note that Faiza is trained by Bob Baffert; perhaps the KYD "no Baffert" rule doesn't apply to the KY Oaks.

Forte', on of the 2 top rated colts, who won the BC Juvenile, makes his first start against a good field. Also running is Blazing Steven who won the Champagne. And General Jim, who won the Swale Stakes, will try a longer race (he looked like he would like it). Rocket Can, who won the Holy Bull, is also in.

Wow, it was secondary sire Saturday:

Violence and Practical Joke had the best days as sires in their young careers.

At muddy Aqueduct, in the Gotham, Raise Cain (Violence) won and paid $49.00 to win.

    https://twitter.com/TVG/status/1632146445045485570
Howgreatisnate threw his rider (he's OK) at the beginning, passed horses, didn't impede anyone, and led the field until the end; this horse knows how to race! But then, he had a 120 lb advantage.
The race was fast early and took the wind out of the favorites. Slip Mahoney was a distant second.

At Santa Anita, Practical Move (Practical Joke) was much the best in the San Felipe:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/santaanitapark/s...74285312888833
$10.40 was a gift. Hejazi looks like he prefers shorter distances.

At Gulfstream Park, Forte' (Violence) shows why he is a top contender for the KYD:
    http://www.drf.com/WeeklyHorseDispla...0304&raceNo=14
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1632154679428669440
Forte' went 4 wide and was a push-button winner. Rocket Can improved but was second best. Forte' was awarded a 98 Beyer.

At Turfway Park, the almost white Congruent won the Battaglia easily:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1632212389473951747
This is a strapping son of Tapit!

    For the fillies:

Shidabhuti (Practical Joke), pronounced She Da Beauty, won the Busher at Aqueduct:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1632101489136263168

In the Davona Dale, a new name.. Dorth Vader (Girvin) was a tremendous winner:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1632138304262148097
    Another nice one from Girvin.

In the Cincinnati Trophy, Botanical (Medaglia D'oro) won as she pleased:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1632195988315320321
She paid $95.40 to win! Violence is by Medaglia D'oro, so this was a pretty good day for Medaglia D'oro too.

BTW, Practical Move was awarded a 100 Beyer! (info not available when I posted earlier).

So how do you sequence Forte', Practical Move, and Arabian Knight?

    Ghostzapper

What do you remember of Ghostzapper?
    https://twitter.com/HorseRacingPPs/s...725952/photo/1

He got better with age. He's showing up in the pedigrees of some older horses. He probably doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Faiza put in a professional effort. She is still undefeated. Justique just doesn't seem to be top caliber.
