    This Saturday 1/28/2023

Some big names racing this weekend:

The big 3YOC race this weekend is the Southwest Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January 28, 2023; Oaklawn Park - Race 10; PPs ]
The big horse, Arabian Knight, will make his 2nd start; and he will be the racetime favorite. Jace's Road, who won the Gun Runner, is also in the field. Carona Bolt has 2 wins an may hit the triple.

There are a couple of notable 3YO Filly races too:

The sister race to the Southwest Stakes is the Martha Washington at Oaklawn Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January 28, 2023; Oaklawn Park - Race 5; PPs ]
Defining Purpose looks like the favorite; Olivia Twist is undefeated in 3, but speed numbers are lacking.

The Las Virgenes at Santa Anita, also for 3YOF:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[ URL above; Saturday January 28, 2023; Santa Anita Park - Race 2; PPs ]
Faiza and Pride Of The Nile look to be the favorites; Faiza does not have Pratt on her because he is in Florida. Justique has won 2 of 3, but speed figures were not stellar; but you don't need to win by a ton if you still win.

So where are the top jockeys this weekend? Gulfstream Park for the big Pegasus races:

Here is the Pegasus World Cup Invitational:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
    [ URL above; Saturday January 28, 2023; Gulfstream Park - Race 13; PPs ]
This race is to be the swan song for the best horse in the field (by last year's production); Cyberknife will be heading off to stud after the race. Proxy, Defunded, Art Collector, and White Abarrio are known commodities that will vie for a check. A sharp horse right now is Skippylongstockings. Simplification is a long shot in here, but his only wins have been at this track; horses for courses. Pick Cyberknife over any of Proxy, White Abarrio, Proxy, and Skippylongstockings. BTW, don't tell anyone that there are no foreign horses in the World Cup.

For you turfers, there is a Pegasus World Cup Turf race:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January 28, 2023; Gulfstream Park - Race 12; PPs ]
Ivar looks like the best horse, but Who's The Star and Speaking Scout have a shot at placing.

The Inside Information has some nice fillies:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday January 28, 2023; Gulfstream Park - Race 8; PPs ]
Obligatory has been losing to better competition. Famed, the half sister to Essential Quality, has been getting sharper. None of these fillies are as good as Inside Information was. Inside Information was sired by Private Account; Private Account was also the sire of Personal Ensign.

The San Pasqual has some familiar names:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[ URL above; Saturday January 28, 2023; Santa Anita Park - Race 8; PPs ]
Newgrange looks like the best here. Messier is not the horse he used to be. Hopper is a first time Baffert, and has won 2 of his 3 lifetime races.

    That's all for now.

The colt analog of the Las Virgenes is the San Vicente.

That race will be run at Santa Anita on Sunday:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
    [ URL above; January 29, 2023; Santa Anita Park - Race 2; PPs ]
There are some top California colts running.
Havnameltdown and Faustin are top sprinters.

Mister Frisky, Majestic Prince, Flying Paster, Silver Charm, Exploit, Nyquist, and Nadal are just a few of the previous winners of this Grade 2 race.
The only thing that is odd to me is that there are no KYD Points offered for this race. Odd.

    Foal Cams

Now here is something different to help you scratch that horse itch.

Whysper Wynd Farms in Pennsylvania will be broadcasting foal cams through April.
    https://pennhorseracing.com/foalcams/

This is an improvement over when I stayed up till 2am on a cold February morning to watch my first broodmare give birth. It was thrilling. But, if you are interested, and don't have a farm near you, this might fit the bill.

A word to the wise, 90% of foals are born at night.

In the headline race for the 3YO's on Saturday, Arabian Knight 'put up'!!
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1619482784913047553
Arabian Knight is a long legged horse, and has a great stride. He broke cleanly and then used his natural speed to slowly take the lead and set the pace; in the stretch he strutted his stuff and won by over 5 lengths in the slop! There's more to see, and certainly this horse will be taught lessons in the oncoming weeks.

In the Martha Washington, for the 3YO fillies, it was Wet Paint:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1619431019190579200
A nice come from behind effort for this daughter of Blame. This effort was over a second slower than the boys.

In the Las Virgenes, the favorite Faiza won:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1619482166928486400
Faiza won over a slowly closing Pride Of The Nile. Justique overcame a slow start to finish 3rd.

The Pegasus World Cup Invitational was won by longshot (15-1) Art Collector:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1619470314026696704
Very nice finish by Art Collector (who shows up once every couple of years). Defunded was second and perennial in the money horse Stilleto Boy was third. Cyberknife was never in this race. Art Collector received a very nice 107 Beyer.

Atone won the Pegasus World Cup Turf:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1619454888433565696
Atone ran down the favorite Ivar in the stretch.

    Maryquitecontrary won the Inside Information:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1619420392967503872
The local horse ran down the leader from Waaay back.

Newgrange won back some of that $350k recent price tag by winning the San Pasquale:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1619490487551033350
Coming from a stalker's spot, Newgrange looked very strong in the stretch running down the favorite.

I didn’t take time to handicap yesterday as too many other things happening. I mentioned Art Collector to my wife before the race, but didn’t bet any of the horses. NBC mentioned he is a 1 1/8 mile specialist, AFTER the race. I did some research this morning and he is 6 of 9 since Mott took over his training. Considering those two factors he was definitely worth a bet at 15 to 1. Now he has won more than $4 million. DevilHorse you can comment on his breeding and whether he has much value as a stud. It sounded like after the race they will race him again. Nice to see an older horse who is not gelded continue to race at 6 years old.

So Baffert has a good three year old. I believe he is still banned from the Ky Derby this year so he will get a new trainer at least in name.

Art Collector was a top contender 3 years ago, and then has had a spotty race record. And yet he has made $4M and won 11 of 21. Many of his recent races has been in second tier older horse races.

His pedigree is interesting. His pedigree screams "I'm going to be a broodmare sire!" He is by Bernardini, who won the Belmont, and who is by A.P. Indy out of a top mare (Cara Rafaela). A.P. Indy is a top broodmare sire. Bernardini has been a terrific broodmare sire as well, but not so much a sire of runners. Bernardini is the sire of recent top horses Clairiere and Maxfield On the dam side. Bernardini died in 2021.

Art Collector's broodmare sire is Distorted Humor; yet another top broodmare sire. Distorted Humor is the broodmare sire of Arrogate and Constitution to name a couple.

Art Collector's pedigree has a 4x5 cross to Mr. Prospector as the nearest inbreeding; not atypical for any dirt horse.

But you never know with breeding sires. Sires are born, not made (quoted from a top horseman at a top breeding farm). Art Collector may be the savior of the Bernardini male line, but his daughters will be well worth the investment for the breeding potential.

BTW, yes Baffert is still banned from this year's KYD. But he is fighting that in court as we speak, so I don't imagine Arabian Knight will change hands soon.

He looked much the best over Faustin, in a very good time for 7f.

This weekend the Triple Crown Trail picks up with the Robert Lewis and the Holy Bull.
Apparently Baffert has 12 of the 14 entrants in the Robert Lewis, wow.
I took a look at Holy Bull's career and was very impressed; he won 13 of 16 races. He only lost the Fountain Of Youth, the Kentucky Derby (maybe a bit long for this outrageously good sprinter, and his last race, the Donn Handicap (now the Pegasus World Cup). His bloodline lives on through Macho Uno and many great mares.

Some big impact of the HISA legislation. As mentioned earlier, Texas was one of the states that challenged the HISA rules as being unconstitutional (still pending). The Texas Racing Commission did not allow simulcasting of this weekend's Sam Houston races, which was their big stakes weekend of the year. So they are punishing their own industry for a political disagreement with the national view. Sick! Handle this weekend was $488k; on the comparable weekend last year handle was $5.6M. That's a 91% drop. Unreal.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I didn’t think Baffert’s horses accrue Derby points, so the trainer switch should be coming soon as only about 90 days to the Ky Derby.

At the risk of offending any Texans out there, this state takes politics to the absurd. I’m guessing the track ownership supports the federal law, so the State punishes the tracks and its bettors nationwide. Makes sense to me. I’m also guessing the Texas Racing Commission is a bunch of political hacks, not respected horsemen.

Last year, the switch came later than I expected and for some not at all. Messier and Taiba were the only Baffert refugees that made the field for the 2022. Taiba needed to earn the points in the last race before the KYD while not under Baffert's training.

Big Saturday (2/4/2023) on the Triple Crown Trail

There are 3 big races on the KYD trail, and another 2 on the trail to the KYO:

    At Aqueduct is the Withers:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February 4, 2023; Aqueduct - Race 7; PPs ]
Arctic Arrogance looks like the overwhelming favorite; perhaps Hit Show and Ninetypercentmaddie could fill in the triple.

At Santa Anita is the Robert B. Lewis:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[ URL above; Saturday February 4, 2023; Santa Anita Park - Race 3; PPs ]
You have your pick of Baffert horses, who fill the field; Arabian Lion and Newgate look like the class.
BTW, don't confuse 3YO Newgate with 4YO Newgrange.

At Gulfstream Park is the Holy Bull:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February 4, 2023; Gulfstream Park - Race 12; PPs ]
Legacy Island, Cyclone Mischief, and Rocket Can look like the favorites.

Bonus, non-KYD Points race, is the Swale Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...5/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February 4, 2023; Gulfstream Park - Race 6; PPs ]
Super Chow and General Jim are likely to hit the board. The Swale used to be on the KYD trail, but now it is aimed toward sprinters and not intended for Triple Crown horses given that it is being run on the same day as the Holy Bull.

    For the fillies:
The Ruthless will be run at Aqueduct:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February 4, 2023; Aqueduct - Race 3; PPs ]
Girl Trouble, Malibu Moonshine, and Interpolate are the top horses.

The Forward Gal is being run at Gulfstream Park:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February 4, 2023; Gulfstream Park - Race 10; PPs ]
Atomically, Lynx, and Red Carpet Ready are the best picks.

BTW, I read 2 articles today that said that Baffert horses need to go to other trainers by a certain date to remain eligible for the KYD; one article said by February 15 and another said by the end of the month. So expect some movement of horses into barns.

Also, yesterday an appeals court rejected a motion to keep HISA as constitutional. So the Texas Racing Commission will now allow simulcasting of the Sam Houston races; this decision is late and a dollar short. The TXRC said that they couldn't allow simulcasts under HISA since in their view it was unconstitutional. No doubt the world would have shifted off its axis.

He lost the first race at Gulfstream Park and lost the last one, but in between, Irad Ortiz Jr. could not be stopped:
    https://www.horseracingnation.com/ne...tream_Park_123

No horse paid $10 or more, but then they might have been betting Ortiz. The horses were not all favorites.

I heard this quote on the sports report tonight, "Irad Ortiz Jr. won 7 races in a row... and all with different horses!"
How many of you thought he was re-using his mounts?
However it is good to hear a positive story about horse racing on the local news.

Newgate ground to the front to barely win the Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1621990834743742466
It may have been a last to first move, but if your last in a 4 horse field that is not saying much.
Newgate was awarded a very nice 100 Beyer Figure. Hard To Figure was a neck further back and is worth watching. Arabian Lion faded after setting a so-so pace.

In the Holy Bull, Rocket Can could and did win:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1622005014779789312
The highly thought of Cyclone Mischief had no answer in the stretch. Rocket Can was awarded an 82 Beyer (not that fast).

General Jim came from off the pace to run down Super Chow and to win the Swale:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1621953702088278016
It looks like General Jim wants to go longer. General Jim was awarded a 90 Beyer.

Rocket Can, Newgate, and General Jim were all sired by ... Into Mischief!

Another name worth checking out is Tapit Trice:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1621969103027322880
Tapit Trice (by Tapit ) won an Optional Claimer grand fashion (see video above); this was the second victory in 3 starts for the $1.3M 3YO colt. Expect to see this looker in stakes races soon. Tapit Trice was awarded a 92 Beyer.

Red Carpet Ready was 'ready' and dominated the Forward Gal for 3YO filies:

Interpolate looks like a serious horse. Yet another progeny of Into Mischief.

Charge It, a colt that was highly considered in last year's triple crown trail, re-appeared for the first time since winning the Dwyer last summer. He had an easy win in overclassed company:

    KYD Future Pool 4 - 2023

OK, we have a big week of derby preps coming up this week.

We will have the (postponed) Withers, the El Camino Real Derby, and the Sam F Davis all providing KYD points to the top 4 finishers; there is also the Jimmy Winkfield for 3YOs at sprint distance (6f) [no Derby points].
Early Voting (Preakness Winner) won last year's Withers, Rombauer recently won the El Camino Real Derby, Classic Causeway (now a turf specialist) won 2 years ago.

You might remember from the (old) Hurley Horse Happenings thread that Devil Eleven Stable (Bob Hurley's stable) had Go Go Shoot win the Jimmy Winkfield stakes in 2008.
Jimmy Winkfield was a top African American jockey who won the Kentucky Derby. He won it twice: with His Eminence in 1901 and with Alan-a-Dale in 1902. He had a contract dispute that forced him ride in europe and asia.
In 1961, Sports Illustrated held a commemoration of his 60 years since his historic victories, in Louisville. But Winkfield was not allowed in the front door of the hotel. Times have changed but lest we forget that we are not that far from segregation times.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Winkfield

The 4th rendition of the KYDerby Future Pool is this weekend:
    Here are the PPs:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above; Ky Derby Future - Race 4; PPs ]

Note that Signator is off the derby trail with a minor injury; he'll lose 2 months.

Disarm (Aug) and Gulfport (Oct) are the named horses in the PPs that have not raced in the longest time; no doubt they will be the longest shots.

If you're looking for a favorite, here is one recent poll of the top horses:

    Saturday 2/11/2023 Races of Interest

    Folks,

Some minor colts in for the KYD points races, and a top 3YO filly at Tampa Bay Downs.

Let's start with the open 3YO KYD points races (in sequence of when they will run):

At Aqueduct is the 1 week delayed Withers Stakes:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February 9, 2023; Aqueduct - Race 9; PPs ]
Arctic Arrogance tries again. Adaimo A Firenze has the pedigree .. to be a sprinter; not obvious a longer race will help him unless he needed to get in shape. Hit Show is on an improving trajectory.

At Tampa is the Sam F. Davis:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above; Saturday February 9, 2023; Tampa Bay Downs - Race 10; PPs ]
Dubyanell looks like the choice. Classic Legacy had a bump up in the slop; but he took 3 races to break his maiden. Classic Car Wash could hit the board. Zydeceaux has impressed with wins, but not so much with the speed figures.

At Golden Gate Field is the El Camino Real Derby:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...99/summary.htm
[ URL above; Saturday February 9, 2023; Golden Gate Fields - Race 8; PPs ]
Gilmore and Chase The Chaos look like favorites. Passarando and Nullarbor have wins and decent numbers. I'll take a Gilmore/Passarando quinella.

The above are your KYD point races; below is the Jimmy Winkfield which could produce a contender for the NY Triple Crown trail:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February 9, 2023; Aqueduct - Race 3; PPs ]
Kool Kathmandu and Drew's Gold are in an upward trajectory. Daydreaming Boy has the most experience at competitive numbers.

For the 3YO fillies on the trail to the KY Oaks:

The Suncoast at Tampa Bay Downs:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
[ URL above; Saturday February 9, 2023; Tampa Bay Downs - Race 9; PPs ]
Breeder's Cup Juvenile Fillies champion Wonder Wheel makes her 3YO debut and will be the favorite; she has more than 10 times the earnings than the sum of the rest of the field. However, there is another highly regarded (lightly raced) filly in the race in Julia Shining. Ticker Tape Home can hit the board. Opus Forty Two is working well.

At Oaklawn Park is the Dixie Belle:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/brisw...9/summary.html
    [ URL above; Saturday February 9, 2023; Oaklawn Park - Race 9; PPs ]
Key Of Life looks like a favorite, and has Flavian Pratt aboard. Twirled and Always Angels look like contenders. Stone Silent has the best number, but it was her only race; her pedigree is lacking.

    Burt Bacharach, Horse Owner

I thought it best to put in this forum rather than the BB RIP forum.

Burt Bacharach LOVED the ponies. He was a prominent owner for decades. This is where he went when he wanted to relax.

Hall of Famer Richard Mandella was his trainer and friend. Bacharach owned many top level performers. Soul Of The Matter ran in the original Saudi Cup (and lost to Cigar). Afternoon Deelites was a colt in his year and won over $1M (won the Hollywood Futurity and finished 8th in the KYD); you all remember one of Afternoon Deelites' progeny who played Seabiscuit in the movie. AD was by Private Terms, the sire of Personal Ensign. AD was also one of the top West Virginia breds of all time. Heartlight No. One (yes, named after the song BB wrote for Neil Diamond) was a multiple graded stakes winner.

Here is a more robust article on his participation in the sport:

At the Withers, Hit Show continues to improve:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1624522585097785344
Hit Show eventually led a very strung out finish and was awarded a 91 Beyer (only decent).
Hit Show became the favorite (over the morning line favorite) and was the only favorite out of the races we were focussed on.

Litigate won the Sam F. Davis:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1624537016045285376
Litigate (second choice) took control at the head of the stretch on a track that was becoming sloppy.

Chase The Chaos (third choice) won the El Camino Real Derby:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1624576992644599809
The ending was a 4 horse jail break and the race didn't seem so fast.

In the Jimmy Winkfield, Drew's Gold remained undefeated and looked impressive:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1624475544627576835
I expect that this son of Violence will want to go longer.

    For the fillies:

In Florida it was Dreaming Of Snow to win the 'packed' Suncoast:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1624529422027231232
Dreaming of Snow paid $78.00! Frankly, in mid stretch I thought this race was all over as Wonder Wheel seemed to have interest in the leader (turning her head) and it didn't look like she was interested in passing the eventual winner. Horses are pack animals; when they run through the fields as babies there is a pecking order with a definite leader vs. followers (not speed related). Wonder Wheel will have to mature to get past this tendency IMHO; blinders perhaps. Julia Shining was a good 3rd.

In the Dixie Belle, Klassy Bridgette (3rd choice) was up to the task:
    http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/insta...e=inc&print=on
    https://twitter.com/i/status/1624542724656603138
    Good stretch duel.

Also in the news, Newgate (who won last week) is off the KYD trail; he apparently has a hock problem but is expected back during the summer.d
