Even with two straight subpar offensive rebounding performances, for the season Duke is still the #1 offensive rebounding team in the country (42.3%). I agree it would be nice to get back to that after two down games.

Regarding assists, it's interesting to split our season into top 40 vs. non-top 40:

Duke assist% in games vs. top 40 teams (3 games): 34.7% (equivalent of #362 in the country)
Duke assist% in games vs. teams outside top 40 (5 games): 60.6% (equivalent of #39 in the country)

Not sure to what extent this is low-sample noise, but we do seem to pass less against better teams. Ohio State is, of course, a top 40 team, so we'll see if this trend continues.

Finally, FWIW, here are our four factor performances in last season's Ohio State game:

    OFFENSE
    eFG: 41.5%
    FTR: 24.6%
    OR%: 21.4%
    TO%: 10.0%

    DEFENSE
    eFG: 55.6%
    FTR: 40.7%
    DR%: 79.4%
    TO%: 17.1%

This season, our defense seems to be better than last year's team, so hopefully we'll keep our fouls and their shooting percentage down. We're also a better offensive rebounding team, so hopefully we can keep our OR% and our shooting percentage up.

We have a huge size advantage inside vs these guys. Will we be able to exploit it and win those mismatches?

And if they decide to pack it in with a zone or sagging man, can we hit our 3s tonight? 30%+ would be a big improvement. Looking especially at Proctor, Grandison and Whitehead who will mostly be shooting over smaller guards.

Will Whitehead and Lively be more active and effective?

Coach has had a few days to get these guys ready. Playing at home. I’m expecting a good hungry performance and a W.

My guess is that the assist percentage is somewhat linked to the 3pt shooting. In our 4 games with 5 or fewer made 3s, we've averaged 8.5 assists and just 3.8 made 3s. In the games where we made 6 or more 3s, we have averaged 17.8 assists and averaged 9.3 made 3s. It's not a 100% correlation, but considering that 84.6% of our 3s are assisted (compared to less than 40% of our 2s), I'd say a decent chunk of it has to do with that. When we make our 3s, our assist numbers go up. When we miss them, our assist numbers go down.

The Ohio State game last year was simply a function of the fact that AJ Griffin wasn't playing yet, so we had no depth. So when we got in foul trouble, everythig fell apart. I suspect that if we look at the numbers through about the point that either Mark Williams or Theo John got his 4th foul, our defensive numbers look better. We were up 57-50 when Williams picked up his 4th (with 10 minutes to go) and were up 59-50 when John got his 4th and 62-53 when John got his 5th. But for the last 6-7 minutes of the game, we had Mark Williams in the game with 4 fouls, and that really handcuffed us. OSU scored 18 points in the final ~6-7 minutes, after scoring just 53 in the first 33-34 minutes.

Last year's team just wasn't deep as of Dec 1. We only had 3 frontcourt guys at that point, so when 2 of them got in serious foul trouble we appeared to panic a bit. Hopefully this year's team is better suited to withstand foul trouble. With 3-4 bigs and Mitchell able to play the 4 (Grandison and Whitehead can probably fill in in a pinch too), we have more depth to withstand foul trouble. We don't yet have the offensive firepower that we had last year, but we should be better equipped to avoid the bottom dropping out on us.

Combine that with OSU being a younger team this year than last, with us getting the expected degree of home cooking from the refs (as opposed to OSU getting that home cooking), and with simply the general advantage of playing at home vs on the road, hopefully that leads to a better result this time around.

10-9 Buckeyes at the under 16. Grandison with 5 points off the bench early. I thought he’d have a great game tonight. Lively, II just found him on a beautiful give and go for a bunny.

After a shaky start on offense the players have settled in. Nice couple of plays by Grandison on the receiving end of good passes.

Flip tries to do too much. Playmaking please no more hero ball. Wreckless turnover so unnecessary. Proctor get to work.

6 turnovers for Duke in less than 9 minutes.

16-15 Buckeyes at the under 12. Gotta take better care of the ball.

Young wasted that possession. Fast break more of that. Get the damn rebound . Grandison and Young got to wake the hell up.3 or 4 turnovers by careless play by both of them.

Doing well in every facet except two: turnovers and opponent’s FG%. We are shooting well as a team, and dominating the glass. But we have given away too many possessions.

I can't say we are playing well. Better than Sunday, but Duke still has difficulty making scoring plays. Got to play much better! Stupid foul push off. Careless play is getting me angry.

Whitehead looks so tentative. We play so young. Roach just can’t keeping missing these open shots.

22-20 Buckeyes at the under 8.

Duke is off to another poor shooting game from 3. Currently, they’re 1-6 from 3 for 16.7%. Really hoping they start draining some if they continue to shoot so many.

We are not good on offense. They miss shots and when they get decent looks they can't make shots. Grandison and Young have to step up. All of our guards are not creating , realistically Duke would be up 6 or 8 if we could make shots. Coaches got to get into these players heads.Proctor! yes more of that. He barely moves the net on the free throw line. Whitehead and Lively still not playing good enough.

Defense is playing quite well. Which is good, because the offense has been brutal. Still, to be only down 2 despite 7 turnovers, 38% shooting, and 16.7% on 3s is a positive.

Clean up the turnovers! I think we will settle down and be ok. Lively looks better tonight.
