    Congrats to Flip

Named ACC Freshman of the week for the first week of the season: https://goduke.com/news/2022/11/15/m...-the-week.aspx

    Best line from the article...

Over the last 10-plus seasons (since the start of 2013-14), the ACC Rookie of the Week has been a Blue Devil in 75 of a possible 154 weeks. 22 different Duke freshmen have won the award at least once in that time.

    Congrats to Flip!

His win is also a win for the "counting stats" folks. Yes, has the two double-doubles. I would argue that Mark Mitchell has been the best freshman in the ACC so far.

I love this for Flip, who probably had to have heard some of the rumblings about him not living up to the hype this offseason. Hopefully he continues to prove those doubters wrong!

Now we shift to discussing Flip being a guaranteed OAD and freaking out over our 5 position next year

Not to derail the thread, but if... if... Flip is OAD then the 5 won't exactly be in terrible hands if we are using Ryan Young and Christian Reeves. And there is always the portal as a way of dealing with a last-second surprise.

Kyle has been named ACC Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row. This time, I think it was highly deserved.

By the way, Kyle is currently 9th in KenPom Player of the Year ratings. Not bad!

Kid's averaging a double-double on the year! It's hard to say he was "clearly" Duke's best player in each game, but when averaged together i think he clearly was Duke's best. In the Kansas game, he led the team in scoring and rebounding and m*****f***er-ness, but he shot poorly from the floor, but nobody else played particularly well in comparison. It could be argued that Proctor had a better game vs. Delaware.
If he keeps this up it'll be hard to deny him FOTY for the ACC, and maybe even the country! But that is quite a ways of...

Here's my Fearless, way too early forecast: Both Flip and Whitehead will be All-ACC 1st or 2nd team. Either Roach or Proctor will be 3rd team. And, of course, Duke would have to be at or near the top of the ACC to garner such awards.

Filipowski has been named ACC Rookie of the Week for a 3rd week in a row.

Over the summer, I was convinced that Mark Mitchell would be ahead of Filipowski, at least at the beginning of the season. I have been totally wrong about Flip. He's been a stud.

Yeah, given the apparent (lack of) quality of the conference overall, I think there's a good chance we land 3 guys on All-ACC teams. Filipowski feels like a good bet for the 1st team for sure. Hopefully Whitehead finds his sea legs and gets there. And I do suspect that a guard will eek onto the 3rd team as well. I think Duke finishing outside the top 2-3 in the conference would be a massive disappointment given the lack of quality in the ACC this year.

As far as way too early All-ACC, my wild-rear-end guess is:
    1st Team:
    Bacot (UNC)
    Filipowski (Duke)
    Smith (NC St)
    Beekman (UVa)
Love (UNC - the homer media will buy into the count stats from the UNC guy)

    2nd Team:
    Laszewski (ND)
Whitehead (Duke) (I simultaneously hope he gets here and hope he makes 1st team)
    Wong (Mia)
    Gardner (UVa)
    Mutts (VT)

    3rd Team:
    Edwards (Cuse)
    Roach (Duke)
    Franklin (UVa)
    Appleby (Wake)
Hall (Clemson - assuming his knee recovers)

Ditto. Between the performances in the high school all-star games, the apparent struggles in summer practice, and the struggles in CTC and against Houston, Filipowski seemed shaky. And yet since the games started to count, he's been mostly terrific, and certainly on average terrific. I hope it continues, and that the other freshmen make big strides to close the gap.

I know he's not a top 3 scorer for UVA, but I've got to think if UVA finishes first in conference and gets 3 players on the All-ACC teams, Kihei Clark will have to be one of them. Basketball media love a senior leader.

Yeah, Clark is in a huge group of guys who could find their way onto one of the teams. Pedulla (shockingly good so far for VT), Joiner (NC St), Omier (Mia), Goodwin (ND), Pack (Mia), and countless others could find their way in over some of those guys. It is a way too early guess, after all.

Kenpom computes an ongoing ranking for his National Player of the Year award. Purdue junior Jack Edey leads that list currently, by a decent margin. In fact his top 10 POY candidates includes 5 seniors, 4 juniors and 1 freshman. And that freshman is …

Has it ever been that top heavy before during OAD?

As far as im concerned he is our best player.

Surprising considering how I thought it would be Lively or Whitehead as the hype was much bigger for them. Roach also hasn't really made a bigger jump like Wendell did.

Lively in December does not look like a 1 and done. Flip has a brother at Harvard. He might not be ready for the NBA lifestyle. Duke might not have that many 1 and dones. Whitehead is far from looking solid. Proctor Mitchell. Duke plays 9 we may play 11 in 23/24.

Here’s my hypothesis. I don’t think all the talent evaluators whiffed on Flip vs Lively/Whitehead. Each game I’m seeing a little more out of both Lively and Whitehead as they re-integrate after their injuries. I expect by mid January both Lively and Whitehead will be playing up to the same level as Flip (Lively won’t score as much as the other two but will impact the game in other ways). Proctor also seems to be getting better each game.

If I’m right, this team will be an absolute terror in about 6 weeks.

I absolutely agree. Just have to be patient. Hope they can keep winning while the freshmen reintegrate, as you say.

Another week, another Rookie of the Week honor for Filipowski from the ACC. Flip has now set a record and might tie another. He is the first player in ACC history to win the Rookie of the Week award for the first 4 weeks of the season. Jabari Parker holds the record for most consecutive Rookie of the Week honors with 5. Not bad territory.
