I saw Strange World yesterday with the kids and some in town friends (I didn't vote, was just told that's what we're doing) and yeah, it's not very good...there are some beautiful visuals in the animation but besides that, it's definitely lacking in plot, substance, and emotion. Compared to something like Onward, the straight to Disney+ film during the pandemic that also features a journey of sorts, it isn't even close and it's not like Onward was one of the best animated films they've produced either.

There are flops, and then there a big fat huge humongous flops filled with tons of naked A listers.

Well, perhaps Babylon is the only one amongst the latter.
Domestic for Babylon is lucky to hit $20M

Wow. I'll bet Brad Pitt was paid that much just for showing up, and his ain't the only large salary in that one.

Puss in Boots isn't going to make it either.

At this point we are running out of films and there has to be a Top 5.

    Black Panther 2 - $427m
    Avatar 2 - $287m
    Violent Night - $43m
    Strange World - $36m
    The Menu - $35m

You've got to figure Ant Man and the Wasp is going to top $50 million at least and not out The Menu. A good chance that Puss in Boots (currently $26m) can climb that hill and pass Strange World.

The following 9 picked "field" and it may hold up!
    bigperm13, BlueDevil2K, Dar95, Gooch, Native, PackMan97, pcal6vb, Udaman, Wander

I’m going to see Violent Night this week to boost my chances!

We are through the holiday season so we might as well update the standings.

    1. Avatar 2 - $440.5 mil
    2. Black Panther 2 - $439.6 mil
    3. Puss in Boots 2 - $66.1 mil
    4. Violent Night - $48.0 mil
    5. Strange World - $37.2 mil
    6. The Menu - $36.4 mil

Whew... that is one anemic list (after the first 2). Puss in Boots is showing some staying power and should comfortably pass $100 mil. We still have a few significant films to come. Ant Man 3 is clearly going to be huge (I expect it to easily pass $250 mil) and I bet at least one other film pops and makes it to $100 mil. Still early...
Why are you wasting time here when you could be wasting it by listening to the latest episode of the DBR Podcast?

I was on the fence between PiB and Strange World, and I absolutely picked the wrong one.

The maxim, "No one lost a DBR Box Office challenge by picking Disney", no longer holds true.

M3gan is doing well. Probably well enough to claim that 5th spot, unless I’m overlooking anything. I was going to go see it this past weekend, but the thought of driving in the rain made me stay home. Maybe next weekend for sure.

    Latest standings --

    1. Avatar 2 - $572 mil
    2. Black Panther 2 - $449 mil
    3. Puss in Boots 2 - $112 mil
    4. M3gan - $60 mil
    5. Violent Night - $49 mil

Clearly Quantumania will have an impact on this list, likely finishing somewhere in the 300 millions. The big question is whether Knock at the Cabin, Magic Mike, Cocaine Bear, or something else may be able to catch M3gan.

I'm just proud of myself for sniffing out M3gan as a contender and putting it in our poll... ruining the chances of those "field" voters. Ha!

I'm seeing Magic Mike ads nearly non-stop.

Otto won't catch M3gan. M3gan won't catch Puss in Boots.

It is really down to Ant Man(a lock) and Magic Mike vs M3gan.

Ant Man coming up next week...

I suspect that a week or two after Ant Man opens we will be able to say goodbye to this edition of the contest. I strongly suspect that the top 5 will be:

    1. Avatar 2 - $650+ mil
    2. Black Panther 2 - $450+ mil
    3. Ant Man 3 - likely in the $350 mil arena
    4. Puss in Boots 2 - $175+ mil
    5. and M3gan - $100+ mil

I don't see Cocaine Bear catching M3gan, but you never know.

I might have to take my family to the movies to help this happen...is Cocaine Bear appropriate for a pretty sheltered 9 and 11 year old?
