Well, you'll be able to watch them rebuild it if you want.
Yea, some days I feel that old.

Iíll try to post a video of what 150mph wind gusts look like.

Out here, the surge comes from the gulf and will wash across the island if it gets that high. Itís a barrier island and only about 1/2 mile wide at its widest point. Most homes are built to allow flow underneath, this one is, and we are over 25ft.

My business building is 119 years old and at about 5 ft above sea level. Thatís my worry at the moment.
I feel for you. I think you're going to get the worst surge from the backside before the eye, then get a surge from the front side after.

Cape Coral looks to be where the biggest mess is going to be. So many houses that are going to be covered with water.

Won't be much left on Sanibel Island afterwards either.

Ian is currently 45 miles SW of Punta Gorda. It is hitting Wheat real hard right now.

Best wishes to all in that area.

Wheat sent me a brief video of current conditions around his house, which you can view here:

Ian's slow movement is terrible for the west coast as it strolls and pounds. But it's "great" for us in the path on the east coast. That gives it time to dissipate over land and will "only" be a tropical storm when it gets here. Charley zipped across the state in 2004 and was still punching as a hurricane when it passed us.

I feel so bad for those on the southwest coast. I've ridden out 90 mph winds, I can't imagine 150. Take care.

Yea, I know what youíre all thinking, and I wouldnít recommend my decision for anyone else. But Iíve been through a bunch of big hurricanes in my life and knew what to expect and prepare for.

Itís been blowing like hell, lots of tree damage but not much structural damage that Iíve seen on the island. Most homes here are built to cat 5 standards, Iím in one, we are prepared, and I feel very safe. Many homes off the island are in flood areas and not built to the standard of the house Iím in. Thereís going to be some severe damage in SW Florida.

Believe it or not, we still have power on the island as I type this.

We are certainly not out of the woods for some major damage on the island. As the storm moves inland just north of us we are going to see a switch to onshore winds on a high tide about 3pm.

Iím hoping my retail shop doesnít get flooded with the expected storm surge.

Not concerned our personal safety, we are well above any expected surge.

Hope everyone takes this one seriously and stays safe, itís a nasty one.
    Best wishes!

It's amazing the beating those palm trees can take.

Stay safe, Wheat. This storm is one of the most powerful to ever hit the west coast of Florida. Not counting the Panhandle, obviously.

I'd say including the panhandle, if the 155 mph winds reported are accurate..

Definitely one of the worst. I seem to remember Michael coming in a few years back and hitting Mexico Beach at 160 mph. Wiped out a small condo my family used to go to once in a while. Very sad.

I saw a post on another board reporting that Ian is the fifth worst hurricane ever to hit the United States, with four of those five landing in Florida:

    1. Labor Day Hurricane (1935) - Florida Keys ... Cat 5

    2. Hurricane Camille (1969) - Mississippi Gulf Coast ... Cat 5

    3. Hurricane Andrew (1992) - Homestead / SE Florida ... Cat 5

    4. Hurricane Michael (2018) - Mexico Beach / Florida Panhandle ... Cat 5

    5. Hurricane Ian (2022) - SW Florida ,,, Cat 4 or Cat 5

Check out this one: it's from a 3rd floor window in Ft. Meyers

Judging from the height of those trees, color me skeptical of the claim that this video was shot from a third-floor window.
